I want a steam controller 2! Just mimic the layout of the deck with a more controller like design and Valve had my money. Also, the naysayers I always see seem to be Switch fanboys. Maybe they'll grow out of fanboy land and be able to enjoy both. Lol.

Caution! I would not trust the sorting of the steam bestsellers blindly. Valve might even changed the sorting algorithm such that the deck appears always in the top10. But this is speculative, without real numbers how many units were ordered no one except valve knows.

Top Sellers list is based on the price of the games. Since the Deck is over $400 it can sell less units than the games below it but appear higher because it made more money overall

I tries to build PC/Console with OpenSUSE (installed twice). I trying to use hibernation and try to add grub script to read CD. Problem was: BIOS must be set to ahci mode and this causes on my test hardware. Simply: click an icon and system hibernate, create file in special partition. Content of this file will tell grub, which system to ran. Of course, when there is game CD, we boot into gamming system.
I think Steam Deck is a great think. I dream about something like that and now it comes reality. But... I have 3DS, Wii and few gaming laptops. Maybe I will buy it in future.
Also, Valve take a lesson from the past. Main problem with Steam Machines was hardware problems. Many companies creates one's Steam Machine, which hibernation problems, for example. And consoles such like PS, and XBox use hibernation to boot faster. As far as I known, Steam Deck boot really fast.

Got mine today. Absolutely loving it. Brings back memories from my childhood playing my gba and psp. Playing the sims 4 on it right now. Laying on my bed in swim shorts because it id way too hot outside.
It surprises me how easy it is to get origin installed and run non steam library games through proton. It runs buttery smooth and very simple to add custom controls. This thing is bringing me back to my sims 2 pets on my psp and gba days.
I haven't been able to relax in months but playing this thing finally brought me some relieve from stress. I bought it to wind down after a long day of trucking. And it definitely delivers. I don't have to play the newest games on it. But I am happy I can do it if I wanted to.
The deck is the handheld pc gaming experiënce that I have been searching for most of my life.

@@andreawesterhof3753 Yep I play with the expansion packs except for the latest highschool pack and some kits. Still need to get those.
It runs without any issues from a fresh install. The 1280x800 resolution is perfect for perfomance and graphics at 7inch. Everything is setup at ultra settings. It looks sharp and runs smoothly. I did resize the UI to make it a little bit bigger. But overall it looks amazing.
It is important to customise the standard buttonmapping. I set it up with both analog sticks controling movement and camera rotation. And the right trackpad is used as a mouse cursor. I can click with the trackpad A button and R2 trigger. I setup the bumpers to zoom in and out. I also mapped the shift button so I can fill up walls and floors easily.
It is a very intuitive experiënce and everything works. I could easily build a house in build mode. And life mode runs perfectly.
Haven't gotten around adding some mods. But that is quite easy in desktop mode.
It takes a little tinkering to set it up but once that is done it performs well.
The sims is not too resource heavy so that makes it the perfect game to play on the deck. I want to emulate the sims 2 console versions as well.
But overall no lag. Just a lot of fun. And it is amazing to play a complete sims game on a handheld.
You will be enjoying it on the deck. I hope you got yours already. They ship quickly if you are based in the Netherlands or Belgium. Distribution center is located in Waalwijk. Got mine the next day after they confirmed shipping it.

It's great, and has surpassed my every expectation! As others have said, I haven't played a game on my (significantly more powerful) desktop computer in months. :) It's quite honestly the handheld PC-ish device I've been waiting on for years. The existing handhelds available were close, but *way* too expensive, and they mostly seem like a really awkward way to use Windows. The other knock on effect is that the existing handheld market is gearing up in a big way to compete with the Deck, and that's great too. Especially with Valve intending to make Steam OS 3.x available to anyone. The hardware is fine, but it's the OS that actually makes it great IMO. I hope this is the "iPhone" moment that makes handheld PCs explode in popularity.

I have put Windows 11 on my Deck. SteamOS is interesting, however i find that personally many of my games have issues in Proton or with anti-cheat posing my accounts at risk.
I like SteamOS for the more casual stuff, hopefully Valve continue their current track of providing good driver support to let people have the choice. Something that always put me off the Steam PCs is that lack of choice in some instances.

I think I measure the success of the Steam Deck not by how many units Valve manages to sell, but by how much Linux adoption and development it manages to drive. They are certainly related, but ultimately, it's of paramount importance to decouple the gaming industry from Windows.

Any info about active Steam users seems to claim 90 million users. July's Steam's analytics say Arch Linux is 0.17% of their users. Obviously within that there are just regular Linux users but that gives us around 1.5 millions units of Steam Deck. Let's say 1/3 of that is non-Steam Deck users and it's still a million with people still queued up. Those are rough numbers though but it still looks promising.

Top Sellers list goes by price and not actual units. I didn't know this until recently either lol Basically since the Deck is over $400 it can more easily appear high up on the list despite selling less units. That's also why you barely ever see popular cheap games like Vampire Survivors in the top 10

If the next product will be the Steam controller and I think it will be another fantastic item. Because they learned all problems and issues and made amazing SteamDeck, they can just reuse this success for the controller. Maybe even make it more ultimate and customizable.

The number 1 reason for the success is the failure of Steam Machines, Value collected a lot of data and Proton coming out so soon after they cancelled the Steam Machines shows that they were already working on the problem of low Linux support. By the time they had Proton working, the home game console didn’t make sense anymore and that made them prototype a new portable version of the Steam Machines—but with those devices having a bad reputation, they changed the name. So the whole time between Proton’s release and the Steam Deck’s, they collected Linux usage and performance data. That is why.

However I'm not sure you can directly gleam sales numbers because it's top ranked. So we know how those are counted and the Steam Deck is handled the same way?
Not that I want to question the success, but I do hope it persists.
When they announce an updated SteamDeck I think that would be a good indication that it's not a fad like other steam hardware projects.

I didn't sell it. I've been using it more than my high-end gaming PC. I can play games in my backyard, or on the couch, sync the saves, and then continue on my high-end gaming PC.
I was afraid many games wouldn't run properly because it would be running Linux, but I totally forgot about it until I read the name of this channel and remembered that the machine runs Linux.

Only thing about it being top of the carts I assume that means the 5$ pre order reservation, not the actual buy. But seeing that production has ramped up it is a great sign, also the fact that some devs not only acknowledge it but even work on supporting anti cheat for it, when they haven't been bothered to do that for Linux yet. I got one a couple weeks ago by the way, it's awesome.

The more it gets mentioned in news/reviews etc in the gaming world, the more games will ship with actual Linux support and the fact you can "just run" games on it will open more peoples eyes that there are other OS's out there that do everything they need. Win win for everyone.

It's a success in that they're still selling as many as they can make. Hopefully a success in that Valve sells enough to make it to retail stores.
But "hundreds of thousands", over the course of half a year, in the platform space, isn't really a major success of any kind.
I mean, the Dreamcast sold half a million units in its first two weeks. By the six month mark they were well over 2.5 million sold. And THAT was moving along so slowly that Sega had to cancel the platform inside of a year.
FWIW, it IS super-promising that major games are getting verified prior to release.

I've had one for nearly 6 months now, it's awesome. With a couple tweaks here and there you can run modded Minecraft, I've seen some people also play switch-emulated games on it too. The only problem is that everyone uses Windows, which isn't bad because it's an amazing OS. But the deck, in desktop mode, runs on Linux OS which isn't as popular so many like myself have to get used to the change. Also, certain game services such as Easy AntiCheat don't like the Linux OS so some games are outright unplayable without changing it to the Windows OS. This would be an easy thing to do, except that it significantly drops performance across most games. One article charted Elden Ring at around 50-60 FPS with 4 hours of playing on Linux. On Windows that changed to 25-40 FPS on Elden Ring with about 2 hours of playtime. I overall love the Steam Deck, it's an amazing concept with a ton to offer but certain companies and games required specs really sap the fun out of it.

I'm a bit doubting. They just managed to be the top GPU in Linux computers that use Steam (by 7.56% which is a decent number for that).
But regarding all computers that use Steam, they aren't even listed.
Using a Linux distro at all means you're in that 1.23% of users that use Linux,
now if you also use a SteamDeck only GPU, then you're only roughly in the 7.56%*1.23% = 0,093%
of the players.
If we use the 120 million users (which is a rough estimate),
we'd get only ~111600 of devices that are likely to be Steam Decks. I am aware that the survey is not representative of the actual numbers (due to the way the people are chosen, like having used Steam nearly daily. Also having a Steam Deck and a PC is not at all mutually exclusive and it's most likely the case).
Now, I'm sure that the number is actually a lot higher. But even 10 million devices would be nothing compared to the 110 million Switches that Nintendo has sold.
112k players is definitely not nothing and Valve has the money to be pouring the money into these devices. And this isn't even accounting the fact that the actual percentage I calculated is lower, because I'd have needed to use the "Arch Linux" percentage (However because the "Steam Deck GPU" percentage is only dependent on "Linux" trait and not "Arch Linux" percentage, I could only say that for sure in a "112k or less" manner).
Now the Steam Deck might be a late burner (and it most likely is),
but for now it's lacking some features that even the PSP had.
For example proximity play (called Ad-Hoc play if I'm not mistaken), easily watching movies, looking at pictures, playing music, etc.
It will remain an extra "insurance item" for existing Steam Library owners,
in Valve's plan not to get screwed over by Microsoft.
When Microsoft forces Windows 11 or Windows 12 after they already broke their promise that Windows 10 would be the last Windows,
then tries to close down their ecosystem, Valve will be able to provide their existing player base with an alternative.
And this is how I see this device and why it's so important to any major Steam Library owner.
Even if Microsoft was able to "Thanos-snap" Steam away from the Windows platform, Steam would be still able to survive if this handheld is widespread enough.
Because what do you rather buy a game for? Two stationary gaming solutions? Or one that is stationary and one that is portable?
Doing this, would allow Valve to create "Steam machines", yet again, if the time really called (which to me seems unlikely, but not preparing for such a threat when you can, would be foolish). Because even now, they have already proven that they can maintain decent compatibility with most of their library using their own independent solution.
It definitely gets me not to move over to Windows 11, for the time being. As long as I can count on Valve pushing this, I'm free from bowing down to Microsoft.
I only need Windows for games, because I can't afford to a shader starting to be converted from DirectX12 to Vulkan in a competitive round and because of pesky Anti-Cheat not letting me join with anything else than Windows.

the point at which I was expecting to happen, kinda did with spider man, but I was thinking it'd be a success when indies make gba-but-in-720p60 HDR for it, and taking this a step further and specifically designing around every thing steamdeck can do, like not just buttons/touchpads but also microphone related stuff? remember when the DS had games where you blew into its' microphone? or how about something completely out of left field like the analogue sticks doing different things if your thumb isn't on top of them?
when we start seeing completely unique to the steamdeck titles, that have things that can't be replicated on other consoles, like the switch, or desktop pcs? thats when you know its a success.
but yeah, I specifically was thinking about 2d games, with like, massive draw distances and hardly any polygons. now that I write that out I realize something like that would never really happen though, excepting maybe rpg/jrpg's. but yeah metroid fusion, advanced wars, megaman battle network, chrono trigger, final fantasy tactics/tactics advance, games similar to final fantasy 12, or 'offline MMO's' like xenoblade chronicles/phantasy-star...
but in like 2d.

It's a great device. Only just got mine. I don't think we are at mass adoption yet.
I think as long as valve keeps verified rolling and updates coming it might outsell some other hand helds like the game gear from days gone. Thinking further ahead maybe next gen will see it take off as a entry level gaming pc and get mass adoption. The big one is xbox live if they manage to get that running too we could be looking at a new era for valve and console/pc gaming. Imagine maybe Sony and valve join forces to wreck xbox or the other way. Things could get really interesting!

I doubt many of us thought the Steam Deck would be a direct threat to the Switch, but what the Steam Deck does is to get the ball rolling and with that, it could be the Deck 2, 3 or 4 that becomes more of a direct threat to Nintendo.
We should remember that the Steam Deck was Valve testing the water to see how the market would take, they had no idea that it would be this popular and it's a given once the Deck 2 is released, it will have a lot more stock at launch and Valve might be able to get a better deal out of AMD because of economy of scale, basically, Valve and AMD had no idea how popular the Steam Deck would be, with future ones, Valve could do what Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft does when it comes to economy of scale, that could mean a lower price point or better specs for the given price.
So yes, Nintendo doesn't have to worry for now, but give it a few Deck gens and it could become a real threat to Nintendo and what Valve is doing with the Steam Deck, there's every chance they can do it for a home PC console, a bit like the Steam Machine but done right with Valve doing the hardware and the software being in a much better place.
If Valve plays their cards right, they could shake up PC and console gaming over the next decade.
I also honestly think if Valve can do pre-defined game profile for games, that would likely get a lot more gamers to want to buy the Deck, especially from the console crowd and it could be done like how consoles do it now, a 60fps mode at low settings, 30fps mode with higher visual settings and a battery saver mode.
There are a few ways this could be done, Valve could do it but ideally, the developers of their own game would do it but I think a better option would be for the community to do it if the developer of the game hasn't already done it, with the community, it could work a bit like how it works with the controller for games where gamers upload their profile for others to use, in this case, Valve or the community could pick the top 3 for 30, 60fps and battery saver mode, I think this would get a lot more gamers to buy the Deck that want gaming to just work like a console.
It should be easy enough to do, Valve could have it where Steam replaces the default config file of the game with one that is Deck ready that sets up the frame rate, visual settings, controls and so on, Valve could even have a system level option where gamers can pick 30, 60fps or battery saver mode so games default to that with the option of you being able to override that if you want a different profile for a game.
If Valve really wants to eat into the console market, this is one way to go about it.

Canadian sales ordered were delayed over a lot of other places and biggest thing for me is not every steam game is compatible, not talking about VR. I got my Steam Deck last week and I'm both impressed and disappointed.
It's a great piece of hardware. The screen is good enough, controls are great, and the ergonomics of the device are far beyond any other handheld I've seen. I can actually see myself using this device for some time to come, something that's never happened with a handheld before.
On the software side though, I've been less than impressed.
The store, library, and just the all the device options and menus are kind of a pain to navigate and use.
Game compatibility so far is spotty. It's hard to be too hard on Valve here - I haven't tested many games yet, and 2/3 of the games I've tried are "Unsupported" on Deck (Grandia HD and Disgaea 4). However, even Horizon Zero Dawn (a "Verified" title) has also given me problems with both input and suspend/resume. Not the best first impression at least, given that I'm rarely unable to get games running acceptably on desktop Linux.
And finally, the desktop mode is a trainwreck. Would probably be just fine with a dock, mouse, and keyboard, but I don't have those on the go where I'd actually use the device. At home I have my desktop and have no use for the Deck.
I really want this to be more than an expensive emulation device, but that's kind of where I'm at with the Deck right now. Thankfully though, since all my complaints are software related, they are fixable. And given the obvious success of the Deck, I have hope that things will get better.

Zero reliance on Windows i think it's it's key feature. I'm sure once SteamOS is more widely available, and Proton keeps growing, to be used on other hardware (it is already technically) a lot of people will move away from Windows. Game Developers will soon follow suit and we might see native Linux games, using Vulkan API.

The steam deck has always been a clear success from the making. I don't know why people even had doubts when literally everything similar to the deck doesn't even compare to it nor out out to the gaming community to even make it work. Like most of valves product it's solid and this time they found a market that's actually taking interest. The same happened with index. Steam controller. Potentially the steam machine If it wasn't way ahead of it's time. And the concept of steam link.

my dude! Just found this channel - like many others im sure - who were in Q4 and got pushed up, loving the wealth of great content. Never thought I'd get into Linux but Valve had to go and change that. You can see how far they've come in their product design since the Steam Controller (the difference in the trackpads alone is wild), and I agree I can die happy if we ever get a SCv2, but thankfully have a few mk1's to hold out with.
I think they should go all out and make an ultra premium SC to compete with the xbox elite.. like put some lacquered wood panels on it, really class it up and market it as an ultra premium option.

it is good for emu retro stuff but useless otherwise
