It's not hard at all. It's a single entry "passwd", and then you enter a password twice.

Passwd is the one every deck has at first. Type that in as original password and then create your own.

@@gamingonlinux the on screen keyboard has a really daft issue where it will accept your inputs (the keyboard button will change and it will rumble) but wont actually input the letter any way to ensure youre actually typing what youre typing?

I had to factory reset my SD. it wasn't bad, Games saves are on the cloud. Just had to reupdate and reinstall everything

Just got my Steam deck today, wanted to get Power tools so I put into dev mode but when I tried changing user password I got "Authentication failure" enter password but I hadn't set any password so I tried passwd in konsole still same issue can anyone help? Does valve ship decks with user passwords already, I can't just add a new password like all the vid tutorials from a few months ago show.

its not letting me enter any text after i typed passwd and pressed enter bringing the keyboard up and away and back up did nothing, as did closing konsole without saving, switch to gaming mode and back, restarting the deck etc Edit: It *was* typing it in, its just invisible. you have to type it in twice, so make sure you use a keyboard because the touch keyboard sucks and frequently misses inputs.

I have my password but it constantly says it's wrong when entering commands that ask for it. The password is correct because if I enter passed it asks for current password, then I enter it and then asks for new one and confirm it then says it's changed successfully. But when entering a command that needs the password it says it can't verify because it's incorrect????
