this is kinda useful for small things like dragging files from A to B quickly without having to switch modes. For example while modding games outside of steam workshop, this is something very very useful!

@@ProtocolPropski The only explanation I can think of is that Steam's lib files cause the program to not work properly. Steam provides its own lib files in order to have its games work on many different distributions. I wish I could test that theory but I have no idea how to run a native Linux executable through Steam while using the normal system lib files it would normally use if run outside of Steam

@kade I don't exactly know how else to put it, but I'll break down my steps. I downloaded the Linux build of XR Animator from their github, and extracted the contents into a folder on my SteamOS Desktop. I then found the "electron" file which is the app it's a Chrome Electron based application, and I defined it as an executable from the properties panel. then I added it as a Non-Steam game, and attempted to launch it from steam, at first it would act as if it was launching by showing the icon on the task bar (the notifications side/right side) then disappear and not boot. I confirmed I can in fact load it, and do all the tracking without issue by manually starting it from the folder outside of steam, and that worked, but that's it directly launching from Steam just refused to load in Game/Desktop mode. I mean give it a try yourself

@@ProtocolPropski Steam can't launch native Linux executables? I'm not sure how that's possible. If Steam can't run it, that must mean you also can't run it through a shortcut or from your home menu because Steam is essentially doing the same thing as that. Could you enlighten me?

@kade True although it's a nice option for those who want to play around with the idea, so I always welcome that. for instance in my use case I have a native linux executable that isn't an .appimage that I simply cannot get running through Steam, I use it when I stream though because it's my motion capture solution it's called XR Aniamtor, this would be the only way that would work without having to go to Desktop mode every time I wanted to use it.

Not really necessary since you can add individual apps like file explorers to Game Mode. You don't have to use this script for that

Nice hack, I'll continue the built in methods via power menu but this looked 10x quicker to jump back/forth with the caveatnof locked resolution and no full screen mouse support.

I wish the controls were better mapped for the Desktop Mode by default! It's stupid how you can't use the virtual keyboard without Steam app open. And when it's open you lose the function of the triggers as mouse buttons!

You can simply edit the desktop steam input configuration (just like you can on Windows) to make the triggers work as mouse buttons. Steam settings > Controller > Desktop configuration.

This is way more useful than you think: firefox is broken under game mode, changing that script to launch firefox instead of plasma will make it work inside its own wayland compositor.

You may have covered this already but I just found your channel. Does the deck know when it is docked? For example, if I wanted to run games at 1080p instead, would the steam dock remember these settings when docked and switch back and forth?

@@gamingonlinux ok, thanks for the clarification! I noticed the beginning and end of that chunk are a single dash. Maybe that's some formatting code in youtube. Like how in discord _this_ would be italicized. But it's weird that it still displays the start and end dashes. Edit: lol, youtube actually italicized that. So that's probably it.

This is so underrated. It's how I use desktop mode now. I only do desktop tasks on it like that and not try to play games. Some file name suggestions Decktop Mode Deck on Deck Or what I went with, Valvendeck. Customizing the controller interface is so much more fluid than it is on the actual desktop mode. I really want more people to see and use this.

For some reason it's not working for me. It just flashes for a sec like it's going to work but goes right back to hit play. I also have a problem where some of my games do the same thing even though they work in desktop mode.

This is honestly the coolest mode. I have been crashing my console frequently trying to use it as a better interface to build a better controller interaction experience. I want to share a mouse setting I saved have used enjoyably on the desktop mode. If I could strictly export this setting in itself, I'd call it "Ping Pong Mouse" I use both track pads to... ping pong the cursor around. An older setting, that may very well be the default, does this flicker back and forth and it's super disorienting

I do this, it could absolutely be refined, but I really like how it feels operating the mouse on the screen, and it's helpful to have both hands operating the mouse when needing to switch hands.
