You can map the back buttons onto anything that you want. Control and alt would be options

My favourite shortcut is STEAM+DPAD RIGHT which gives a nice zoom of any part of the screen. Very useful for small text etc.

I happened on a workaround for this. It looks like its an issue with starting a new game on the deck. I was able to load a save game from the pc instead. Otherwise breathedge plays well.

Igot one tip, it's a weird one and hardware related, not software related. As far as i'm concerned, i haven't seen anyone else suffering from that despite spending my life on the steamdeck reddit. I encountered one problem on my two SD that rma didn't fix. The back and front plate would scratch my palm where they meet eachother due to a slight misalignement. The sharp plastic edge of the deck would protrude slightly and make it real unconfortable to hold. Opening and closing back the deck to try to fix what could be an assembly problem didn't fix anything. So a very "easy" fix i finaly thought out after a couple month of simply duck taping with eletrical tape and having to deal with the sliping tape and the glue that was left behind making a mess out of it was simply to round the corner of both plates by embossing the sharp edges. For that, you need to find a round metal object without any sharp edges. It need to be round. The back end of a tuning fork is what is commonly used by harmonicist embossing their harps for exemple. Once you got it, running it without any force on the small rift formed by the junction of the frontplate and backplate will smooth any sharp edge of the plastic.

One of the TPU shells off of Amazon would solve that issue for you. I got one for protection's sake but it turns out I like that it bulks the system up a tiny bit for my giant mitts. It ought to also smooth off those edges.

How is always charging and keeping the deck at 100% going to save your battery life?

@@gamingonlinux Are we sure about this? When I have mine plugged in, the white light will turn off (when it's fully charged?), then after a while, it'll turn back on, then turn back off, etc. EDIT: Oh, and thank you for the video and everything you do! :D

@@Th0Rx666 No, it has various things in place to prevent issues like not allowing it to be repeatedly charged to 100% (many tech with a battery do this) and various other things. I run both of mine plugged in near 24-7 with no issues and 100% battery health. It is no doubt similar to how the Nintendo Switch handles it being docked a lot of the time.

It doesn’t always charge it, the power will pass through. That’s how most modern devices work…

My tip is that every steam deck user should have proton GE. It's really useful for certain games. I would recommend downloading multiple versions because for me, some games only work on specific versions of proton GE

@@THEwed123wet yes desktop mode discover store protonup-qt is there i don't know why but steam doesn't have the ability to install flatpaks other than chrome for now so you need the discover software store for now there is a way to install flatpaks from the terminal if you want to avoid using desktop mode as much as possible you might also be able to add discover as a non-steam game & use it that way from gaming mode haven't used discover in a while but i think it has the ability to launch flatpaks as well

Oh yes that wi-fi thing is a huge one. When I download things I'm gonna be home anyway and it just pisses me off to see the wi-fi run at like 35-65% of it's capability, I'm paying for the 300mb/s and I want to use it all.

@@tropicalfruit4571 Yeah they can be a little expensive, but like you I have a 400Mbps internet and I hate downloading from Steam at 23-26Mbps on a 5G connection so I opted to bite the bullet and now I'm downloading at 57-62Mbps during the day and faster if I wait til the middle of the night.

@@Joreel It's a solution but if I had to buy adapters I'd want to buy a hub or a dock and these are sort of expensive at the moment and some shitty hubs were reported to brick the Decks so at that point I just want to buy the Valve's one. Jsaux one is tempting but I will want the official one and the prices of them combined are just too much. And also just looked at the usb-c to ethernet adpapters prices and damn xD Not happening.

I bought an Ethernet adapter for my Deck so I can just connect to that instead of WiFi when I'm at home and downloading games. It's much faster than my wifi.

One fun tip, if you add a non Steam game that also has a Steam version (maybe you bought it from a different store for instance) it will not by default show the Steam community configs for that game when browsing. If you set the shortcut name to the AppID Steam uses for the Steam version of the game it'll let you browse them. Say for instance you own the GOG version of Cyberpunk 2077 and add it to Steam, if you change the name to 1091500 (visible in the URL of the store page) you can see the ones people who own it on Steam have come up with, then rename back to a more readable one when you find one you like. Don't have a Deck yet so can't 100% verify it'll work still there, but I've been using the trick for years with my Steam Controller/Steam Input with other controllers/etc and would be odd if they changed it now ==EDIT== Have the Deck now, can confirm it still works. Have to export as a template and rechoose if you rename it back, I think I just always left it as the APPID and went by picture instead of name so never noticed that bit. There's also a Steam URI you can run from a browser to pop the configurator for a game without doing the renaming bit if that's easier for you, still need to do the export as template bit. Enter steam://controllerconfig/APPID in a browser and set to open in Steam ==EDIT 2== Trying out URI method, can't get it to work properly even on desktop desktop (as opposed to desktop mode on the Deck), just causes a crash for games I don't own on Steam, got bored with troubleshooting since the renaming method has always worked for me. Could halve the renaming steps by creating a dummy non Steam game that doesn't actually launch anything important and continually renaming that rather than renaming the shortcut for the game itself I suppose.

My favorite discovery is that you can modify the behavior of the Steam Deck layout in desktop mode by going into Steam (in desktop mode) -> Settings -> Controller -> Desktop Configuration. I changed the joystick to control the cursor, R2 = Left click, L2 = Right click, swipe up and down = scroll up and down in a circular motion (Left track pad), and a lot more. Navigating the desktop is so much easier now!!

You should be able to run Deck UI right now. Google for commands. I’m on an ultrawide and Big Picture Mode is stank.

Steam input let me fix the only thing i don't like about okami hd which is the camera permanently being forced to have inverted controls

If you hold down the quick access button, the left stick up & down will adjust screen brightness. Community Steam Inputs are your friend, especially if you don't want to make your own. Steam inputs can be set as a normal click, double click, or long press allowing multiple keys on one button (or use double or long presses as an easy way to avoid accidental back button clicks).

It seems that the printer subsystem is not installed. I would refer to the searchengine you trust to search for howtos on how to install printer support on a arch linux system including KDE support for printing. Unfortunately that would require some terminal commands to the 'pacman' package manager and also the danger of it being reset on Steamdeck update. )-:

One thing few people seem to be aware of is that the gamescope frame limit options introduce 3 frames of input lag when active, this is in addition to 3 frames of input lag that the steam deck always has active from its video controller's constantly enforced triple buffered vsync. Some people may not notice it but that extra input lag is just awful in some games. If possible see if the game itself has a frame limit or vsync option and you'll probably get a better experience, and it should still work for 40hz mode in most cases.

If your SD card is in the deck when you separate the back from front, it will snap it in half. Is that what you meant?

It's one of the absolute best co-op games ever.

I’m glad I watched this. Been figuring stuff out on my own for the most part other than Proton stuff. I found the Steam button shortcut menu, but didn’t know the other button did this too. Very good to know for when I have to use the D-Pad shortcuts. I have a tip for fighting game players. (If you’re not using a controller) Try the track pad. I know it sounds like a meme, but I prefer it over the D-Pad. It can be easy to mess up inputs on the pad, because it seems like you have to press hard to get diagonals to register. Go to training mode and turn on input display. Try to crouch block with both, you’ll see that the trackpad will register the down back input even if you adjust your pressure. If you use the D-Pad, just barely changing pressure will resort on a down input instead which means you get hit. It’s all preference in the end, but I was hoping the D-Pad would be slightly better for fighters. It’s still okay though for just messing around or trying something out.

The Steam Deck is slowly showing me the benefits of Linux. So feature rich, it’s very cool how much control the user has to use the OS to its full extent via the terminal. The way most games are able to work by pure magic never ceases to amaze me. Lastly the emulators work very well on it. I’m essentially able to play all games from the beginning of time the latest release.

I cant even get my Deck to connect to wifi. No matter what i do. Any Tips?

Should you fully power down the deck when swapping out SD cards?

I have been going through a ton of Steam Deck videos trying to find out the best way to add games from your Amazon launcher. I have been able to do it by installing the game on a pc and then transferring the game file including the .exe file, but it can be a real pain especially when trying to get controller support. Has anyone come across a video that will help me out?

the screenshot thing did,t work for me, I selected the download folder like you did just to see and got the message 'you must select a proper screenshot folder' then tries several and all got he same answer. I have no idea what a proper screenshot folder is.

Hey Liam, Just wanted to say thank you for your excellent work and "briefings" I wanted to place in this video comment section specifically. The appended command in shortcut properties "-gampadui" can be done in Linux DT via a desktop shortcut to application, and using the full string as "/usr/bin/steam -gamepadui" and in the beta channel for Steam client. Doing this interestingly fetches a process task called "SP" and will appear as a window of the environment exactly when you go into Gaming Mode. This was a fidget test in seeing how I could manage numerous duplicates in my library in a faster way. Currently, when "remove non-steam game from library", and then pressing back, it resets to the top of the Non-steam games section, its kind of frustrating. Now, with seeing which apps are needing to be fixed I can navigate much faster in windowed mode and make the edits much faster. Perhaps this was already known, but wanted to share in case anyone is curious. It's a great way to see how the CCloader plugins appear and what hero backgrounds look like without having to wait the few moments going to "Gaming Mode" and just back to desktop constantly - much faster
