Thanks for the video! It would be super beneficial if you explain what these things you’re showing are. There are a ton of new to linux people now and they have no idea what proton ge is or what the benefit is. Or like itchio you should off a few videos ago. Like what is it? I get I can play Celeste on it, but is it a replacement for epic game launcher? Gog? Just a suggestion that you might want to educate the audience. Especially given the steam decks popularity and it being a whole new world.

Think of proton versions as like versions of a windows emulator. It's _not_ an emulator, it's a translation layer which is more direct than an emulator AFAIK, there's a difference, but if you don't know or care about the difference I'd say "sure, if you know what an emulator does, a translation layer is like a close sibling to an emulator, does pretty similar things." Basically, all you need to know: The more proton advances as software, the more games you can play, and better. Proton GE is essentially an unofficial third party version of the valve "emulator" that comes with steam, and it has more features due to being able to call upon software valve's official proton cannot, which fixes audio in certain games among other things at times.

@@gamingonlinux may I suggest you make a video about all of these various things you’re showing off then? We are already seeing lots of new to linux posts on the steam deck sub that would greatly benefit from a basic understanding of all these random linux gaming specific things. Also, another video suggestion is someone made a post on how they switched to btrfs for their file system on the SD card. Which let to improved loading times and smaller file sizes. Maybe a video on this too? Especially because there are different compression sizes and settings, plus a guide on how to do it.

Would really appreciate if you did a sort of addendum video showcasing other jrpgs and uncompatible games that get fixed and working with proton-ge. I think it would be really helpful to put into perspective the compatibility of the steam deck

Best place for this info is probably proton-db. People will often post the tweaks they did to get stuff working there.

Thanks for the Video can you show Star Trek Online on the Steamdeck (it is free to play)? But show it with the Arc launcher because the Steam version can not connect to Arc I still waiting for my steamdeck :D

Love ProtonUp-Qt. Great app by a great dev. Much easier than manually downloading and installing Proton.

You don't need proton GE for P4G. Audio in cutscenes work fine with proton experimental

Hey Faz, is GE required for P5S? Game loads then hangs at a black screen whenever I try it on normal and then experimental. Can’t get it to work for the life of me.

Is there somewhere a tutorial how to install linux apps that are not available in steam or the discover store? For example apps available on snap, pamac-aur, etc…. I am trying since days but missing libs and permissions get in my way.

@@zachpn The whole it's a PC means you can do whatever you want, but if you want it to remain as stable as possible it just means don't enable dev mode.

Not from me no, and you won't see one as that would need developer mode. Anyone making guides using developer mode are a bit silly, as Steam Deck OS upgrades will wipe all those changes.

Hi! How about the dependency hell? GE often mentiones about how you should have staging wine installed with some additional stuff so you don't encounter any problems with his version of Proton. Does SteamOS come preinstalled with these, or maybe ProtupUp does this somehow?

I installed Proton QT and restarted into Deck and GE update does not show. Still 7.01 You might be skipping a step or two for us Linux ignorant. How and where is Luxterpeda?

Warning: Following this guide caused my Steam Deck to boot loop. When I turn it on, it now says "Verifying installation" and then "Loading user data" and then it restarts. Flashing the recovery image now. Sigh. Reminds me why I gave up on Linux so many times in the past.

@@gamingonlinux ha. That should be true, but it 100 percent happened. Followed your guide, and it went fine. You mention shutting down steam so it will show up. I moved my mouse to the steam icon in the corner, but before I right click, it just vanishes. I think, that's weird. Click return to gaming view or whatever it's called, and it launches like it's starting up. Boot loop. Turn off console, back on, boot loop. Tried again, same thing. I load the recovery image, "reinstall steam os" and it works. I lost my wifi and Bluetooth devices, but otherwise my non steam apps are still listed as well as proton-ge! :p Not saying something's wrong with your guide. It's probably steam os being buggy.

Not sure about anyone else, but proton-ge won't boot persona 4 on deckthe game after pressing play and waiting on the steam logo. Just hangs for as long as it's open. Once tried for 10 minutes. Also, has anyone played the whole way through yet? I'm using valves Proton 7.02 layer and some cutscenes just don't play. Like the cutscene at Junes where they perform as a band..
