I bought an Alienware Steam machine R2 at the time because I had enough Linux native games at the time, it was a reasonable price, and the form factor was right (console sized). It really did pay off now thanks to Proton, the system still runs great (after replacing the drive with an SSD and replacing the OS). BTW, the steam controller came with the system.

It’s the same that I have. It’s a very nice little device, still kicking. It runs Minecraft better than my M1 Mac, well, if you don’t use native Java runtimes. XD

Still have an Alienware Steam Machine but with ChimeraOS now. Can't wait till they switch over to the new SteamOS layout. It's a handy little machine for the type of games you play with friends in front of the television.

I’m still using my Steam Machine, it came with the Steam controller which I never used. I’ve basically always used it just as a Linux PC, mostly for work. Never used SteamOS either. I bought it because I needed a small PC for work and It was convenient for me to a) Know from the start that it was 100% Linux compatible and b) didn’t have to buy it with Windows. I used it to play games, still do but, to be fair, I’m more of a console gamer than a PC gamer.

As soon as i saw that there were going to be multiple Steam Machines at multiple price points even going up to $6000 i knew they were doomed.
The Steam Machines should have targeted a specific price and a specific performance. And what the manufacturers did defeated the purpose. They were for nobody. They were not for pc gamers. They were not for console gamers.
The Link and Steam Controllers are actually good hardware.
If Valve made a Steam Machine 2.0 but only made one to three versions priced aggressively it would succeed.

At the time I was excited, but from the beginning I wondered who it was supposed to be appealing to. Linux users already have Linux on their hardware and can play all the same games, and are a tiny percentage anyway. Windows gamers would have to give up most of their games. Who's going to buy it?

the steam machines floped, but they coincided with unreal and unity starting to support linux, as well as some port houses like feral , aspyr and the one i forgot the name, so i dont think it was completely in vain.

I think when Steam OS 3 gets released it'll be really easy for enthusiasts to effectively build their own home consoles, emulation stations, or streaming consoles using second hand parts and old office PCs and such. Which is very exciting for me, as an enthusiast. But also I think we'll see small hardware companies and startups attempt to make custom steam machines too!
