Yeah, compatibility of certain programs is the only thing keeping me from using Steam Deck as my only PC. I don't use anything from Adobe, but for me it's Vegas for video editing and a handful of art and music programs. I know there are Linux alternatives, but I've already spent time and money to get proficient with these, I don't want to start over.

We're already seeing other, more premium handhelds getting Steam OS put on them by the community, with Valve in contact with those manufacturers to make it an official first-party option once Steam OS is no longer so tightly dependant on Deck's specific hardware configuration.

Steam Deck got me into linux. Tried mint cinnamon back in 2013, thought it was really bad and had nothing worth sticking around for. Now though I'm trying arch based distros and I feel bad when I have to go back to windows just to get a good experience with VR gaming since Wayland doesn't play very nicely with Nvidia cards and that's the only way to avoid awful framepacing inside my index. My OS in of itself feels almost kinda like an RPG where you build up a character from various classes (desktop environments would be the target of this metaphor in this scenario) and you gain powerful new abilities when you learn commands in the terminal. Put the fun back into using an OS that I haven't felt since Windows XP. Sucks to not have EAC support that's enabled by default, but I have enough games to just play a different game if they don't want to add that .so file, like games with Denuvo DRM, I'm fully prepared to go "lol, bye then" if you won't let me play a game without the roadblocks it entails.

I kinda see where you are going with the Linux but if it's for gaming it still makes little sense to go with it over PC. I mean Linux is more secure, faster, and great for programming etc, but far from user friendly vs PC. My main use for a PC is for gaming so I don't really want or need another OS that just emulates what I can do without jumping through conditional hoops to make a game playable. But on the other hand I am loving the Desktop OS on the SD, and it does expand on my knowledge of Linux.

I think Linux is great as Server Os, I’d venture to say it is the best Server Os right now. I say it begrudgingly because I’m a BSD guy. :) As for Desktop. I still think that it’s great, miles better than Windows and trading blows with MacOS. If something like the MacBook M1 existed in the Linux space I would be hard pressed not to switch back for my daily driver. Let’s hope in Asahi Linux, I guess. I would hope for something designed to run Linux in the laptop space and not vice versa though. But I digress. I see a lot of the PC gamer “elite” frowning at the idea of Linux taking hold in the PC space, they don’t seem to get why we need that… and that irks me to no end. So much so that I often struggle to remain polite. More “everyday” gamers though want to try it out, some because they are fed up with Windows, others just because it’s fun to try new things. I don’t have any data of course, it’s all anecdotal. That said. I really hope for Valve Desktop Os to be good and dead easy to install and use. We need an alternative to Windows in the gaming space designed for the everyday gamer.

I’m personally not seeing how cool Linux is. Especially the type that’s on the steam deck. The steam deck version is so limiting and there’s a lot I can’t do that I could easily do in windows. Like I can’t simply download apps that are not in discovery. And even if I hack my way around it, it will be deleted on the next update. Another thing I can’t do, is map the buttons on my Logitech mouse, because the Logitech app doesn’t support Linux at all. Also a lot of tutorials, if not all, about Linux are not applicable to this type of Linux that’s on the steam deck. There’s just almost no support for step by step tutorials . And when there is, everything looks different and people just assume you already understand Linux well. The steam deck is awesome as a gaming devise but not so much as a computer. They say Linux is awesome because it’s very customizable, but steam os seems to be less customizable than a windows computer, unless you know Linux very well. Which I don’t.

@@gamingonlinux I think it is a problem with steam os. My point is that there is a lot less support for it. Many companies that I want to use don’t support this version of Linux. Sometimes they don’t support Linux at all. The logitech app is an example, there may be a way to map the buttons in kde the future but even then I doubt it will have all the functionalities. Like I doubt you can map the buttons differently based on the app you're on or change the speed sensitivity of my scroll wheel. Is there a tutorial for how to download appimage or stand alone? I’m not sure what that means.

Have been toying with Linux for years but it's only since being made aware of Proton around Feb 2021 I really started looking in to running my Steam games on Linux. I just couldn't believe I could! A recent old (GTX 1060 era) laptop rebuild and excessive pain trying to re-install Windows 10 I finally gave up on dual boot and went Linux all in. I haven't looked back. Yes, I've had to change a few things but the effort involved has been nothing compared with the hassle of Windows. Now I have my Steam Deck, it's like home, just I can take it with me (snail? tortoise? :D ). Amazing bit of kit and if it grows support for Linux gaming like it looks it is, so much the better.

I remain skeptical that the Steam Deck will significantly move the needle for traditional desktop gaming use, though I'm sure it will gain some converts. Because like you said, most people just don't install operating systems. But I do think there will be handheld devices from other manufacturers using SteamOS (or possibly homebrew Linux solutions). Those devices combined with continued sales of Steam Deck will push Linux share past MacOS. And I'm all for it as a Linux user since mid-2000's. I want nothing to do with SteamOS on my desktop, but I'm very grateful for Valve's software efforts as a whole. Proton has been a game changer, always rapidly improving, and even more so since the Deck launched. Not to mention their work on gamescope, drivers, and power management.

Since the announcement of the Steam Deck, I've barely used Windows at all. I kept it around just in case, but it turns out that I don't have much need for it now despite me getting more into gaming.

I played around with arch linux on my desktop, I lasted about 3 months before I felt the need to resort back to Windows. The urge to re-install arch still lingers but there's some windows games that aren't linux friendly that I'm not ready to say goodbye to. If the devs of those games were to ever have a change of heart and make their games linux friendly i.e. open up EAC and battle Eye support on linux, I could play those game on the OS of my choosing while still supporting the devs with my money. I'm impressed by the amount of games I have been able to carry around and play anywhere on the steam deck. The market has increased with Aya Neo and Onexplayer joining the fray, even waking up the 1st maker GPD to freshen up their line-up in an attempt to gain a foothold in the portable gaming PC market. Valve has come a long way to bring linux to the masses in the manner that it has done and I am glad to be a part of it while enjoying the capabilities built into the hardware and the distro that they have chosen to build their system upon. I can't wait to see it flourish and become even better in the years to come.

Yeah it’s about time we had somebody else beside BLOATED windows 10/11. I hope steam os becoming the standard of pc & gaming. Ms has bullied out all other OS companies out of business. IBM OS/2 Warp was one of many os that ms either shut down or bullied out the market. They would done same thing with Linux if that had chance. But they couldn’t. Lol ms doesn’t even trust there own os. They use custom Linux for cloud & servers, and been slowly adding Linux code to win10/11 for years. I hope we start to see game companies/ Devs and hardware vender start support steam os. AMD/Nvidia / Intel, Asus, Msi, Evga, etc along with like Logitech and what not.

I have a pretty kitted out gaming PC running Win11 in my office, but my Steam Deck is my primary gaming device as it stands. Even though my gaming rig would benchmark circles around a Steam Deck, there's just something about being able to stand up and walk to my bedroom or down to my theater while never missing a beat that just speaks to me. Not to mention that the Deck is an emulation BEAST. In my gym, I have an old Optiplex 7010 running Ubuntu with a cheap Amazon controller and that thing games really well even with it's old Radeon card in it. Once GamePass is more available for Linux, I'll probably make the full switch.

using Linux and testing gaming on it since the late 90s (I also use a lot of windows), Im not so much interested in SteamOS as an "OS" but the contributions it makes to Linux in general, for example gamescope, and everything related to the Steam Deck and how is already making Linux a better gaming platform, a big example of that is proton

Well, Steam Deck and SteamOS 3.0 still have a huge hurdle to overcome and that is not ending up like Steam Machines and SteamOS 1/2.0. The interest in them needs to be maintained past the honeymoon period. But, things do look good because the interest in the Steam Deck, handheld PCs, and SteamOS is already WAY larger than it ever was with the Steam Machines. What I would like to see is Valve, other companies and Linux contributors make the Steam Deck and other handheld PCs running SteamOS the best it can possibly be and then turn their focus to doing the same with SteamOS for Desktop once it is out. I think for a long time the Linux community has been working to make Linux better but really haven't had specific goals or enough mainstream use and feedback to guide them into making it a better experience for novices as well. This is their opportunity.

I received the Steam Deck last week and while I think it is a great product I bought it because it was an interesting play-around hardware not because I anticipated I would use it regularly. I am a PC gamer and far to used to Mouse and Keyboard and a high end system. While playing around I could so far agree with reviews that it is a great piece of hardware however I had not anticipated how hard it would be to use a joystick. It works but it feels cumbersome in comparison. I know if I kept at it more with time I would learn the muscle memory of overcoming part of this at least but I don't have the energy most of the time. I think it is a great product however and think it is a much better option for someone coming from the console side. They then also get the option to get to know a bit more about PCs and Linux, which is both something I'd like to encourage. Linux is however not new to me, being a geek and having worked as a Software engineer for many years. But I want to try out more of Valve's variant of Linux. On a whole I hope Valve has success with the Steam Deck and they continue to improve the device. To be honest I'd like a device with a slightly larger OLED screen (while keeping the same form-factor) and making use of newer hardware so most games really run at 60 fps and not something lower. I played aperture desk job and its a great demo game and it played perfectly with 60 FPS and it even worked with steam link so the video was displayed on my TV. However when using Valheim it showed that the system had too much to also manage the video encoding. The game was smooth on they deck screen but stuttery on the TV. Also the lag could have been smaller, there was a noticable delay, even with aperture desk job. I would hope that in future versions this is improved upon.

I have a dock for my steam deck connected to one of my monitors. I like the idea of playing around in it. No, I don't think it's ready for main stream use. As both my monitors are HDR compatible it's a big ask for me to give up that aspect for gaming. Windows does a very good job with the auto hdr option. It's not truly a NEED but it's nice to have. As something to play around with though I'm really enjoying it. I've found my time with the steam deck to be an ongoing learning lesson of how to get things to work on it. I expect I'm missing some useful info that might make it more an easy sell but as I see it now not tempted to make it my main but it seems that Windows will at least have another competitor going forward that just didn't seem likely before. Bought a wireless keyboard and mouse just so I could switch easily from one to the other. Glad I have it. Fun but right now it's more toy than real workhorse for me.

I was off and on with linux for like two decades. But when I saw that the steamdeck was coming out running Arch and what proton was doing I thought I'd give it another run. Installed EndeavourOS(arch based) for dual boot in November 2021, and then basically haven't booted windows again unless I want to play VR. As soon as I can upgrade to an AMD card, I won't even need to do that. I agree with what @WMan37 said, it's brought the fun back to an OS. Customizing and experimenting. Diving in to music recording and such with all the fantastic free software. I bought a behringer audio interface and it just plugged and worked with pipewire and makes routing audio to/from programs so easy. So many things just work with linux now. and the few things that don't work I no longer blame "linux", I blame the developers for not supporting linux.

I think the next step is we need to start seeing gaming computer manufacturers shipping laptops and desktop PCs to stores with SteamOS pre-installed. Steam Deck on its own has opened the door, but penetrating the desktop market is the next big step that NEEDS to happen if we ever want to see Linux usage surpass 10%. And there is an opportunity there, because Linux doesn't have a license fee like Windows. So you could potentially ship the exact same hardware but for $100 cheaper, and that might turn some heads. I hope Valve continues to deliver support and development for SteamOS and it can become the de-facto distro of choice for gamers and casual Linux users alike.

I wonder if their public release of SteamOS 3 will be immutable as well. I'd like what the Steam Deck has, but not be immutable and also boot straight into Desktop mode, where I can just go into gaming mode whenever I want. I guess when they update big picture to the same UI and tool/feature set as deck's gaming mode that'll be just as good but really i want to have the general experience of the deck by my overall experience but more tailored to desktop users.

I bought a Steam Deck just to support Valve for all of their amazing work for the Linux community. In the past few years the number of working games has sky rocketed allowing me to make Linux my daily driver without looking over my shoulder since about 2018. I have been an off and on Linux user since 1998. I never really cared for hand held gaming. I am not the type of person that can tune out what is around me to play on a hand held, but the deck is very impressive. The game mode interface is pretty slick, games run very well and quite silent. The mangohud implementation is fantastic. Which I could get it that way on my desktop. For a desktop it is very solid. Instant on/off sleep is great. I am just not a fan of Arch and very much not a fan of KDE.

I have never touched the Linux system before my switch and there are definitely growing pains going from Windows to Linux. Things have been going well, but not without their headaches. But the more steam decks being shipped and people installing the OS the more it will be supported and I'm sure even a year from now things will be well ironed out. I hope we start seeing developers build on lower end hardware in order to maximize the deck going forward.

I see some people saying oooh it's only 1.3percent but really this is a feet if you consider their millions of users!! (130million total and concurrent of around 21million) 1.27%*0.14% of Archx64 users now versus 0.67%*0.07% at begin of 2022 will still mean many thousands of units already sold & shipped. Way more than Aya Neo, GPD and other handhelds. Then pair that with the fact that other manufacturers have way less reason to support their devices long term because other manufacturers only get paid by the hardware sale while for steam it's their own controlled plattform to sell their users software as part or recurring profit. This is in fact why it's viable: - Valve has a clear interest to support it because it means a safe guaranteed profit source away from other major monopolies like MS & Apple on an open community controlled plattform. - Valve already has talked about Steam Deck 2 - Hardware Changen have already happened several times due to early reports - A handheld is not the same as peripherals because it does not compete with clear established players and those handheld manufacturers that did exist have had low adoption rates until now. The steam deck is the sole reason why we are enjoying drops in prices over the whole market. - Using a well designed and integrated system for entertainment is key: Using Windows is already annoying enough for me on desktop nevermind on a small handheld. And switching OS might not always be viable because you may loose some of the features because drivers and tools like for the Aya Neo are not available on Linux so you are practically stuck with MS and them discontinuing Windows Versions and by extension losing support for your own device.

I think people will use old desktops/laptops running Valve's SteamOS to create a console like experience. People are already doing this with ChimeraOS and more recently HoloISO. Folks are keen to move passed Big Picture Mode and that's fiddly right now for general users, but it won't be forever.

As usual, it's hardware and software that's making the difference. You're right, that it takes hardware running Linux that people actually want to buy to push Linux market share, but it's also having a custom Linux distro designed from the ground up for gaming. There's been many "gaming" distros introduced over the years, but frankly they've all been kind of terrible. SteamOS is the first to mostly get it right. Once we see a critical mass of not only devices using Linux, but also devices running SteamOS or some variant, then we'll really see Linux market share take off in gaming.

This is why Valve should also put a lot of effort onto it's SteamOS desktop side of things as that is a big gateway in showing what Linux can do. A lot of users seem to think Linux isn't any good but in reality, it's not that different than Windows, better in some areas, worse in others and now that a lot more software from Windows works on Linux, it's becoming easier to switch away from Windows to Linux and Valve should push that hard with the Steam Deck, SteamOS on other devices and releasing SteamOS so anyone can install it. Seeing how well games run on the Steam Deck and that most games from Windows work on it, I think many would be tempted in giving SteamOS a try on their desktop PC, especially the gamers that want a more console like experience. Also, what Valve is doing with the Steam Deck, they could do a home based PC console, using the same formulae as the Deck, low price, easy to use and so on, the issues the Steam Machine had in the past was that there was no Proton so hardly any games worked on it and the Steam Machines were not better than a pre-built or do it yourself PC, Valve are now in a much better position to repeat what they are doing with the Steam Deck but for the home market, especially if they create the hardware themselves by working with other partners like AMD.

I have a steam deck and I have come to passionately hate Linux. I have always loved tinkering in the background and I have found that many things in Linux cannot be done without changing the right permissions of the operating system and installing a whole bunch of background packages. Because they're so much variety and Linux it is sometimes very challenging to find the answer for your version of it. I think once the steam deck community gets significantly larger and the knowledge base expands it will be better. But trying to get one game to run required a level of coding that I was able to figure out but that I don't feel particularly comfortable with. I have one game where I cannot figure out why the audio works sometimes and why it doesn't other times. I just have to toggle the audio on and off in the operating system settings until it works. And there's no documentation for it specifically on the steam deck.
