The Steam Deck will be known as the device that punched console gaming and Linux gaming right open. Who needs closed console markets and Microshaft Winblows 10/11 when you've got Valve making $400 consoles that are essentially both handheld PCs and more powerful Nintnendo Switches at the same time?

I was dreaming about it too. I call them "visions". Years back I saw myself playing with a Handheld which was very powerful I felt that I had a lot of fun... Or I will have a lot of fun in the future. And it came true. I had a deja vu while playing the deck. This never ever happened to me in over 35 years of gaming. I truly wish the Deck a lot of success!

It just blows me away how good the Steam Deck is, I was expecting good, but its so much better, playing Cyberpunk 2077 at over 30fps and looking amazing on a handheld! it really deserves this award.

i cant think of a more complete gaming system for anywhere near the price as the deck, only downside it has is the learning curve most windows or console users will face coming to grips with the Linux OS if they plan to mod their games at all

My only personal knock is the battery life. I mean I only play tethered in my car or house but if I ever did decide to go on a day trip by train somewhere one day I’d probably go mental trying to deal with only one charge.

In the long run it could turn into an upside for everyone if we get the ball rolling on good tools for linux. There's no reason we shouldn't be able to get stuff like third party modding tools that are optimized for gaming mode.

The issue that i had, was with "batery storage" mode. Couple times, did play till the empty battery (i know that's not a good idea). After that, even after fully charged, steam deck had black screen. Switching to battery storage mode and waiting till it boots itself on, was the solution. But to get to that solution, i already made a factory reset, that did not help..... :( Feel like this could happen to a lot of people. I hope that there will be fix for this. but other way, i enjoy the steam deck.

I mean, while the Steam Deck definitely deserves the award, that wasn't even a competition. The contenders were a gaming mouse, a phone controller, a SSD, and two novelty luxury retro consoles with a cute design but really steep price for how gimmicky they are. I have nothing against the Steam Deck, quite the opposite, I do also believe it's a ground-breaking piece of hardware, but a toaster would probably have won by default against that lineup. It'd have been much more impressive if it was a "Most Exciting 2022 Console" award or something like that, although I doubt it would have panned out the same way. While my personal vote would still have gone to the Steam Deck, it would have had to fight an uphill battle against the current gen consoles, but on the other hand that would have been a much more noteworthy and satisfying award. That Gabe video was pretty adorable and wholesome though.

I’m not sure that a Pro model could even have a worthwhile jump in processing power yet. The current model is still pretty high end for a handheld device without getting into the power guzzling $1000+ enthusiasts market. Even then, it’s not a huge increase in performance.

Anti-cheat doesn't affect me, but I 100% agree with fixing up offline mode. I've had more issues with that than anything else.

I play almost every day on Steam Deck. I started to play Legend of Grimrock lately. One problem is that I must connect keyboard to separate stacked items, but playing on SD is a mile way better than on desktop/laptop <3

Yeah, you can use the back buttons. Just set the split stack/open stack menu key to one of the back buttons or maybe even make a radial menu with the left trackpad that’ll make it split 1/2, 1/4, 1/8th, etc. I know some games have support for stack splitting like that like with diff keys (Like Rust, but that doesn’t exactly work on deck bc Anticheat lol)

my steam deck has replaced my old daily driver a MSI laptop i spent 1k on a year or two ago i mean all i do on a regular basis is game and watch youtube so it was an easy swap and if i ever want to do something fancier i can always boot up the MSI but i haven touched it since i got the deck a week or so ago

Outside of MMOs, I play EVERYTHING ELSE on my deck! Played all my favorite games like BioShock, Dead Island, Dead Space, Borderlands and more. Now getting into new games, Finished BioMutant, and now about 8-10hours into Fallen Order. What I have noticed since I got the deck, I want to use more controller over mouse and Keyboard. I never really thought I would, I haven't liked using a controller since probably around the Xbox360 days. I have been using my steam controller a lot more (mostly multiplayer games on the deck) and it adds a new layer to gaming for me. I really hope they come back with a Stream Controller 2

Got in this Steam deals the game Tiny Rogues, and, while the controls for controllers are not supported yet, thanks to the community lyout i'm able to play it and it's beeing really fun during these past days.

I love the versatility of it. It was my first exposure to using Linux whenever I used Desktop mode to tinker with it, and being able to turn it into a console with the dock with any TV (or in my case a portable monitor I bought just for it) is great. I've sunk a lot of hours into Elden Ring thanks to it and Steam Cloud is super convenient. It definitely earned that award, in my opinion. My steamdeck is my favorite thing right now. But what I would like to see fixed is recording gameplay off of it natively and being able to screenshot non-native steam applications like emu deck. But that said, love it to death, it's my favorite gaming device right now.

i made a guide on how to record the Gaming Mode, you can find by searching "How to record or stream Steam Deck/SteamOS 3.0+" BUT it's extremely complicated and is actually getting more difficult as new SteamOS updates release. And even someone who knows what he's doing said it doesn't work for him 😿 so I use that to record Steam Deck a lot, but unfortunately it might only work for me. *I agree Valve should add more official support for screen recording*

For the price if you get the base model is amazing. Also the support so far puts others to same. I'm just waiting until I can set a delivery date myself. Im just unable to order one and for it to turn up when I'm not at home. But hopefully they push it beyond the Steam Deck in the years to come. I've only had my SD for two weeks and already I've fallen in love with it. There's just so many things about it that amazed me... And how Valve seems to be supporting it and listening to the community, it will only get better with time. It really opened my eyes to just how closed off and restricted consoles are. Even though I have a high-end gaming PC, the Steam Deck has taken up most of my time. And I can't believe this happened too, but I've actually been playing my backlog of games I own on Steam! Not only that, but I've been buying new ones too! I feel like I don't have ENOUGH games to play!

@Christopher Anderson And that and the fact that more and more previously console exclusive games are now on Steam as well are why I don't play on consoles anymore. They are too closed down, too anti-consumer, and too underpowered even compared to the Steam Deck. And the fact that I can build a new gaming desktop with a dGPU and play games on my Linux desktop is just icing on the cake after Valve literally made Linux gaming a thing. Every Linux gamer owes Valve a ton for what they've done with Proton and Codeweavers with Wine. Without these tools, Linux would not be what it is today!

Dang wish I felt that way, just hit 1,800 games owned on Steam and I still buy more, just be an addict thing lol. Though I’ve always known how restrictive and closed off modern consoles are. The entire point of consoles in the 90’s and early 2000’s was to get a unique gaming experience with software you couldn’t get on PC and a streamlined easy way to play games without installation. Now game consoles are just worse Pc’s when almost all the same games are on PC anyway, and those that aren’t you can just emulate.

Money talks. When the Steam Deck gets close or passes 2 million units, developers will take notice and more of their games will be tweaked and more anti cheat fixes will be done. The Steam Deck community also has a big option. We will just find another game that is equal or better or a satisfactory work around.

I got the lowest end model, which I regret, as even when putting everything on a Micro SD card, the Deck likes to put a lot of stuff (like Proton, shaders, etc) on internal storage. Also the Steam Deck does not handle Microsoft Flight Simulator very well unless it's booted to Windows. With recent Proton updates I've been able to get it booted into the menus, but I can't get it to the point where I can fly yet. Also I've been having some strange issues with my TV recently where the bottom half of the screen warps and occasionally goes black, but I haven't figured out the root cause of that yet.

They should focus on the offline mode experience. I know some games have some stupid DRM, but for the vast majority of the games we should be able to boot the deck offline, play, unlock trophies, browsing media, And going to desktop mode without any slowdown, account verification or whatever. It is a portable device after all, an internet connection should be totally not requested for the full experience. In Valve they need to go on a long travel (offline) with the deck, and the Nintendo switch, compare how they differ, take notes, and work to get (at least) on the same level as Nintendo.

I have been using my deck for about 3 months and I think it is a very good product overall, especially if you are living in the countries where SD is officially sold. But it is also far from perfect. Valve’s support, for example, are really not that great if you just encountered an error with a verified game from your steam library. They will simply reply you with a copy/paste generic ‘check list’ which isn’t helpful at all imo. Most time I will figure out the issue by myself but I’m really disappointed by how poorly trained some of Valve’s customer support staffs are. They remained me all those big tech companies attitude. I hope Valve will try harder to further improve their service and verification system on the steam deck and make it truly the best handheld gaming experience that everyone deserves.

Valve needs to add game clip recording . I'd like to be able to record at least the last 30 seconds of gameplay of my game. For example when I score a goal on FIFA . This a a feature missing.

I love my steamdeck. I have it in my hands every day. I like it more than my PS5, Xbox series x, and gaming PC. I also have a pretty decent pretty powerful gaming PC. I am running a 3080 rtx with the 12gen i7. Having a steam deck lets me play the games I love anywhere I have gone. I totally agree with you about anti cheat. It works. It's up to developers make it work.

For me my Steam Deck is probably the best gaming device I owned ever. I'd say about 95% of all the time I spend gaming is done with either Steam Deck in my hands or docked. And it only gets better with regular software updates, and as more and more games get verified. Congratulations Valve!
