You probably don't need SteamOS to benefit from the work Valve is doing if you are running a desktop. Aim for AMD hardware if you can, then pick a distro. If you are already sold on Arch, you'd probably be best served by an arch-derived distro like Manjaro, which does have a KDE Plasma version like SteamOS uses. There's now a graphical installer for pure Arch also, but I have not tried it so I cannot say if it's any good.
