Since a new patch is out for The Callisto Protocol heres a fresh #SteamDeck SteamOS 3.4 test with benchmarks and gameplay. Its better for sure, but has some ways to go because of the repeating sub-30FPS drops that do not make for a good experience overall.Why did I not lock the frame rate this time? To give you a clear picture of just how much it wobbles around. Im sure others creators will say locking it to 30FPS is fine but its clearly not. I dont think its acceptable for so many harsh drops, even if some later parts are smoother. @@Nakx123 yup almost 40 fps, stutters every 20 minutes or more just once or twice, and yes 30-37 fps not under 30 which is good for now, i hope the next patch will solve these issues but for now as a new game it is smoothly playable to be honest i thought i won't be able to play it on Steam Deck, but thank god i was wrong🫡 Keep it going man i Love Your Channel 💯

Can you try it by switching to DX11 mode. I heard it runs a lot better that way.

For steamos it's quite significant difference e.g. DX11 is implemented via DXVK while DX12 is implemented with slightly tuned VKD3D

dx11 works better without shaders, but dx12 with preloaded shaders is ok

@@XSR1K lol callisto is probably all written in blue prints not a single c++ line for how shitty it is. theres no ai advancement its all pre wirtten by epic and customized by devs. the best UE5 has brought to the table yet is quixel and the one i really love to play with, is nanite.

It’s not just the performance of the chipset, you have to consider advancements in AI, engine improvements (Unreal Engine 5) and much more.

@@travis8106 not to mention the unomptimized pso caching, that had a terrible launch for pc. proton's pre caching fixed it nothing a windows pc can automatically do and had to be patched. steamos and the hardware is truly a pure linux gaming expeirence. i always appreciate valve.

It's a DX12 + UR4 issue - shader compilation has plagued Unreal 4 / DX12 games for years.

I wouldn’t get too excited. Valve has already indicated they will be focusing on quality of life improvements over a performance increase in the next iteration of the Deck. They’re basically going the Nintendo Switch route, though they’re hardware is fortunately at a much better place to start with.

@@Beastw1ck I wouldn't call it incredible considering by the time we get the next steam deck. A 2060 would be 3-4 generations old. Also the 2060 wasn't excatly a powerhouse GPU... even when it released.

Sd 2 is coming in a few years and by that time amd will have 2-4x faster igpus that they talked about and we would be getting rtx 3060-3070 performance so im excited for that

Hey Gaming on Linux, thanks for the benchmark, I’ve been enjoying the game a lot more since patch for sure and have my SD capped at 40FPS I see anywhere from around 28 in heavy areas to 40 in others. Also how do you get your performance stats to be horizontal at the top of the screen

The huge FPS drops in this game are exclusive to the PC version and don't exist on the console versions. It's terribly optimized for the PC, so what you see here isn't really the deck's fault. The low power handheld can't do what a PC does no, but it should be running better but the shaders are compiled on the fly, and not pre-compiled. So every new visual on the screen has to have shaders compiled prior to display and that causes these staggers and drops. This patch doesn't fix that problem on DX12. So to this effect, do not delete shader cache on your deck for this game.

You should see more gains from FSR if you force a higher resolution. I have not tested myself, but I know that's been the case with other AAA games I've played on the Deck. So cool that Callisto Protocol even runs on a handheld!

In other games, FSR2 is a massive difference even with the Deck resolution but not so here. You don't want to use higher resolutions on Deck, as it will destroy performance even more.

did you know that turning on the frame limit also drops fps for some reason instead of locking it? i have a i5 2060 laptop feeding into a 4k 60 HDMI hub to my tv and I noticed a lot of screen tearing so I set the frame limit to 60 to compensate for the tv refreshrate and the built in benchmark showed a lower average. on my laptop, using medium settings with unlimited framerate, average 88fps. setting frame limit to 60, my average became 44fps. this was after the patch. think unreal 5 needs to be fully tested before games are released with it

@@LogainAblar it’s good though, only thing I regret is paying full price. I’d wait for a sale or until the dlc stuff is released next year. The benchmark suggestions are weird too, like if you switch it to the suggested settings, it’ll tell you to use the next higher setting. Like run at medium, it’ll tell you to use high. Then you use high, it’ll say go back to medium. I have a feeling they made this game specifically for ps5 and they ported to pc last minute

Wow, I read your post after adding my own and had no idea that the frame limiter is borked with this game. Even post patch you say? Jeez man, you know what, yeah, I'm going to pass on this for now. I have a 3080m powered gaming laptop but I've seen even 4090 powered desktops struggle with this game pre patch. If a 4090 and a core i9 can't brute force its way to better performance with the CP, you know the devs screwed the pooch.

Great video as always the Steam Deck is an awesome device! ...now I really wanted this game but sadly its not as great as dead space ...i will still get it on a steep discount on one the consoles not getting it on PC ....to me its not the type of game i wanna play on the go or even collect per say ... a few playthroughs and that would be the it for me.

I appreciate the video but , no. Why do people constantly try to run these heavy PC games on Steam Deck at 60FPS? Look at that frame rate counter. It's all over the place and the experience suffers as a result. Dude, lock the FPS down to 30 FPS and call it a day or push it to 40 to 45 FPS if you're feeling brave. But 60 is out of the question and just makes the game run like those hot mess Switch ports people try to pimp as great quality. Let's be realistic with our expectations of what Steam Deck can do. It's great that these games can even be attempted on Deck but the device is clearly struggling.

The point of this video which you missed, was not to give a best settings guide, it was to show the various performance issues in the game. A 30FPS lock won't suddenly fix it constantly dropping below 30, that's not how it works.

I went to do them and the result going by benchmarks is practically no difference, so doesn't seem worth another video yet.
