The Steam Deck has honestly been the absolute biggest thing to happen in the gaming market for decades. I mean, many look at the device just as "a handheld PC" or "a handheld PC console". But honestly, what Valve has achieved is almost impossible. Proton is a pipe dream, something no other company dared to achieve. And with it Valve empowers game developers by simplifying their workflows by only needing to support a single platform, yet, allowing games to be available on Linux and a myriad of console devices. Steam Input is absolutely top-tier software, the best gamepad mapping software ever released. Allowing complex PC games with keyboard/mouse inputs to be completely consolized. For me, the Steam Deck is an impossible dream machine. And I REALLY hope it does well in Asia! :D

@@khalismur You have to consider that I am going at this from the angle of the gaming landscape as a whole... going back to the 90's game development was extremely fragmented, either you developed for very specifically for console hardware, or you developed for PC. (Which was a beast of its own in terms of complexity since your engine needed to be integrated with a software renderer for compatibility as well as several hardware specific graphics APIs renderers (glide, powerVR, opengl, directX etc), not to mention sound cards and peripherals compatibility which was still not standardized). This eventually ended with Microsoft's DirectX forcefully unifying development workflows and dominating the market. Since that time we have really stagnated into a gaming scene consisting of specific console development, with their own hardware specific APIs as well as a rather unified "Windows"-only game development scene. It didn't really matter how awesome Linux was, it would always stay in the periphery due to the lack of gaming software.
This is why Proton is incredible, because it opens up game development for linux, it opens it up for custom console-like hardware running Linux etc. It merges the PC with the console market, making it incredibly easy for developers like myself to focus on game development instead of hardware specific API integration. Sure, I will personally still make native Linux versions (because I love Linux), but ultimately. I actually think it would be less hassle to use Proton as I wouldn't need to deal with two different support ques, two different versions of the game, and ultimately ending up with two fragmented versions due to platform-specific bug fixes. And this is something that is even more of a problem on popular AAA releases. Due to the minimal overhead of Proton, I see no reason why this compatibility layer shouldn't be the future of Linux.
This is why I consider it being one of the biggest things happening in the gaming market. Because it really

Ray tracing allowed nvidia to push prices even higher for gpus. And it's not like it is a totally new thing. Don't get me wrong it looks great, but benefits in games are not that great for costs and 95% cases aesthetic only. Upscalers were also almost forever, but the new ones are in top place this decade for giving even older hardware second life. Vr headsets should also be on this list, but Steam Deck is still the best for the most value for consumers alone

I followed a bit of the twitter fanfare during this event and it was a pretty positive impression overall. Some quick notes about it:
- Komodo's booth was by far one of the most popular areas in the event. The lounge area plus the freedom to just do whatever with your untethered Steam Deck for 15 minutes was unique and the surprisingly decent handling of logistics as hundreds of people went through the booth every hour. In comparison, most hardware demos in tech events aren't this organized and impressively handled.
- What surprised people the most (and this mirrors the Western reaction as well) was how surprisingly light and ergonomic the Deck actually was.
- Valve's game selection was also fantastic. They specifically chose a lot of well-received titles in Japan that were specifically not available and/or playable on the Switch. It's one thing to be told about it, it's another for people to actually play stuff like Elden Ring or Death Stranding directly in their hands.
- It wasn't all dandy though. The staff there cycled through hundreds of Steam Decks every hour and the relatively large selection of titles they had to demo weren't all smooth. Stray, which wasn't that particularly well optimized on PC to begin with, was the game that most commonly freezed up when people tried it. These weren't as widespread but certainly waiting an hour in line only for your 15 minute trial to be negative because of an unexpected freeze does paint a bit of a bad mark on the Deck. Thankfully, these were largely the excpetion and a majority of impressions seemed to come out positive.
- Unfortunately. And this is the big one. The Steam Deck comes out in Japan during the worst possible time as their yen is horrendously weak right now. People would love to buy it otherwise. On the bright side, the PS5 has been drastically underperforming in Japan as well as their core market is slowly getting tugged into the direction of the PC (and maybe even the Deck.)
All in all I'd say their presence at TGS was a great success. Valve and their partner Komodo really put their best foot forward all things considered.

At this rate, Steam Deck is going to be globally *the* handheld to own & put all others to shame. You have to assume that Nintendo will not take this lying down, so it'll be interesting to see what they respond with, but it will be very hard to compete with the openness of the SD. That's not Nintendo's forte, and people have had a taste of it now.

I think the only reason the Switch was a clean break from the Wii U was due to how much of a hot mess the Wii U (and, to a lesser extent, the 3DS) actually was. Before that, they were actually not too bad with backwards compatibility. Considering the Switch’s dominance up to now, I fully expect their next system to be an iteration on the Switch idea and not another clean break; backwards compatibility, at least, should be a given.

I think Nintendo's trying to focus on streaming so they can keep with the latest games without having to invest so much in stronger hardware. Which is funny to me, because a snapdragon 870 which can emulate Bayonetta for switch is only about 300$ in the Poco phone, so I don't see why Nintendo doesn't just go all in on making a beast.

My Deck, as well as VNs, have reintroduced me to PC gaming after a 20 year hiatus, and I absolutely love it. What I especially love is the flexibility of being able to use steam input. Often times I will assign a single command to multiple keys (especially to a VN) just to keep my hands from being cramped after hours of reading. My only downside to the Deck (which isn’t Deck specific mind you, it’s more of a gripe of PC gaming over consoles) is those darn shaders taking up all that space. It made me decide to use a sort of library borrowing system - to only keep the games on Deck that I was actively playing, and shuffle them out from time to time.

@@fapman4878 Since I posted that comment I have gotten much more acquainted with how to best manage that space, and with steam DB, it’s easier to pinpoint uninstalled titles that may have remained, and erase them in the knowledge that I may not get back to a particular title for months or maybe a year or two. I started my steam library a year ago and I still have most of my library not looked into yet, as I understand many out there have a huge backlog :)

The shader thing is a very recent issue with PC gaming and it's one of the worst PC gaming has ever had. It only really started a two years ago after the transition to DX12/Vulkan.
But keep in mind the Steam Deck is literally the best PC in existance for dealing with this shader issue. The reason consoles don't have these problems is because they are one singular hardware spec, as in when a dev makes a PS5 game, it comes preloaded with all the shaders that game needs to run on the PS5's GPU. On PC, there are thousands of hardware configurations, so developers can't ship shaders with their games, leaving every single PC to compile said shaders DURING gameplay, causing unbearable stuttering/freezing.
The Steam Deck is the only exception - since every Deck is the same, Valve compiles shaders for every game and pushes them to every Deck out in the wild to download. Without these shaders you constantly have to download, games would be a stuttering, freezing mess. Case in point Elden Ring, which runs smoother on Steam Deck than any PC out there (albeit at a lowet FPS).

a few note-worth things about the deck, and why its the most important console EVER:
(i know we already know this, but i think this should be pointed in a video form or something)
1)it barely launched, and it already have
*more games than all sega consoles COMBINED.
*more games than xbox series including backward compatibility with xbox one, xbox360 and the original xbox.
*more games than any nintendo console.
*more games than ps1, psp and psvita (ps4 and ps5 are still geting new games, ps2 and ps3 had an big backward compatibility library so im not including then yet)
*all that considering only the games classified as verified +playable by steam, im not even counting other games that also work but havent being tested, or games from other stores like epic, goc etc, or even emulators!
2)No exclusives! valve already said they dont plan to make exclusives, they are the only ones who dont use this strategy, microsoft did with halo, forza, gears and directX, Nintendo and sony also have/had many exclusives, if valve can get marketshare without making exclusives, that will send an message to the industry that this pratice isnt nescessary nor welcome, so for anyone against exclusives, that your chance to put your money where your mouth is.
3)it also double as an portable pc, not just gaming but a productivity device.
4)its more open than windows, you can "mod" the operating system.
5)you can also install windows
6)unlike many other vendors who try to make the device harder to repair, valve is making it easier by parnering with ifix it and making then the official seller of parts to repair.
7)one of the first portable pcs that is cheap enough and powerfull enough to actually have a chance to compete against the big 3 (especially nintendo). (by compete i mean marketshare as well as stole some sales from then, actually impact their market)
the list goes on.

Steam Deck (and PC in general) openness and flexibility is another exclusivity on its own since others decided to not do the same.
Also not to mention dozens of indie games that are released only on Steam, oh yeah that includes several Valve's own games.
While PC is already open, Valve is making it even more open with quality of life improvements and community-centric approach of using the device.
This is actually benefits Valve in the long run since they don't have that many employees within the company, so they trusted their loyal community to do the job for them.
I'm not saying others can't follow Valve's path, but Valve already have their cult that is quite unique than any other major gaming company. It's so hard for other gaming companies to have similar level of loyal community that Valve have.

I think that the Steam Deck is the PC we needed: A completely standardized system (like a console), where you can JUST play, or work or whatever you wanna do, this is an issue i've been seeing since i've began into PC gaming 10 years ago: PC it's about customization, but THERE ARE WAY TO MANY CHOICES, in RAM alone you can go to any shop, and there are over 900 different DDR4 kits, when even then only the top 10 recommended kits will end up selling anyway, the market is flooded with options which the vast majority are completely irrelevant anyway, and makes it extremely difficult for the average consumer to enter, the steam deck in the other hand is basically a console, where things run or don't run and that's it, we need a filter and a purge in the PC hardware market, there are way too many options.
And that's only for the consumer, what about developers? where do they even begin looking for tests benchs for their pc games? the closes thing you get to standardized pc is when you look at the steam charts, and thats only shared by a part of the community, the steam deck just solves all of that it's the perfect average system, not to cheap, and not to expensive, more or less everyone can afford one, and that makes it a great baseline to make games for.

I *suspected* the Japanese would be going crazy for the Steam Deck, why *wouldn't* they? It's a device that does all the same *important* stuff the Nintendo Switch does, and does it all *better* , it has a much *bigger* library of games than *any* console, with emulation making it even *bigger* , as a PC, it's a lot *more* powerful than a Nintendo Switch, with a lot *more* memory space, and most of the games on it looking a lot better and, more importantly, *performing* a lot better than on the Switch, with more and more being optimized to perform well on it *all the time* , and *all* while still being as portable as a Switch, *and* being around the same price! The *end* of the Console Age is upon us! We're entering a *new* age of gaming; the *PC* Age! I'm confident in that statement because now that the Japanese are seeing *first hand* just how superior a device the Steam Deck is to the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo, and not long after them the *other* console making companies, are gonna have to *stop* making consoles, and just make all their games for *PC* instead; it's just what makes sense from a *business* perspective! Why *waste* money, continuing to make consoles *no-one's* gonna buy when you *cut* the expenses of console making *out* of the list of things you have to budget for by just making all your games for PC instead? With that expense *gone* , you're actually gonna be making *more* of a profit in the long run.
