Actually, it meant nothing more than that it runs on all 3 platforms. Except for GTA 3 , vice city and SA, there is no per platform license.

Crossover will probably take up the mantle of MacOS support. I can see them making a Lutris-like launcher for the different game clients

@BlackWorm I don't mean to be the old guy shouting at clouds, quite literally. LOL. But a future where gaming is just in the cloud sounds awful to me. I don't think most gamers would be happy with it. More choice, okay, why not. But just cloud, where you don't own squat and just rent... my gods, as we say in Italy "anche no".

@BlackWorm Steam Cloud Gaming is one possibility, but for now they're all-in on the hardware side of things but it would put them in a good position for one.

@@gamingonlinux Well, they could have used FreeBSD as Sony did. The licensing is even better from a corporation point of view. I think they picked Linux because they are not Sony, or let alone Apple or Microsoft and they needed the community support as well. Linux community is bigger by several orders of magnitude. At least, that’s my personal take. In any case Crossover already exists and works, they should just be aware of it and maybe let the testing burden entirely on the community? But then again, not big enough for them to put any effort into it. I guess.

Not quite. The reason they support Linux is because it's free and open source, there's no special licensing concerns and they can (and have with the Deck and SteamOS) change it fully to suit their needs, and hire developers to work on the code directly (which again they have). Part of the reason why they don't do any of it for macOS is two issues: - Metal, yet another API - They don't need it for anything

a prime example is, until recently, Rocket League only worked on Proton 5, or the community made Proton-GE. After the most recent update it seems to work just fine on all newer versions of Proton. Sometimes when they make a change in a version of proton to add compatibility to one game, it can inadvertently break another game, and there's just so many games it's hard to test all of them.

@@gamingonlinux so they are trying to make sure there's one version to rule them all but aren't quite there yet? i would be fine with that knowing things will get better.

That is a whole 'nother complicated subject. Sometimes games only run with certain versions, so they keep older generations of Proton around for those until they find why they don't work in newer Proton. There's a lot more to it than that but that's the gist of it.

Not necessarily. The benefit of having the proton compatibility layer is in part that it gives Valve more control with integrating features across games, and providing that for SteamOS. This is in part why Steam Input works out better for games where on windows there would be issues (EA Origin games are an obvious example). Another benefit is the obvious one where it allows them to have support for Windows apps, while providing the feature support from a custom Linux-based OS, which they wouldn't be able to do if they just used windows on it's own (since Windows isn't provided in a way analogous to how Linux is, only Microsoft can use windows in such a fashion).

I want to think about these. Everything on life is not served on a silver platter, and Steam deck exists because people are passionate about graphics API and OS environment hacks/workarounds. And if you want to stay ignorant thats your choice, but please speak for yourself.

Hey did you ever get that issue resolved? I hope it works alot better now. There's a community on reddit that i always go to whenever i need support for the steam deck. It's called r/steamdeck. Theres alot of active people who help with technical issues just like yours in case you still need help. Of course you may have to send into steam support for them to look into it, but i always check reddit to see of anyone had similar issues.
