Free WiFi points in the USA tend to be terrible too. 😕

I'm not sure about how to make it 'better', but they definitely need to make it 'work'. I took my deck away this past weekend to a place with no internet, thinking it was fine because I had lots of games downloaded onto SD cards, but in the event, I wasn't able to play any of them. I've since discovered that you need to set it to offline mode *whilst* connected to the internet. Catch-22. Very disappointing - hope these fixes go some way to addressing that.

I cold booted my Steamdeck while out and about (no wifi) 6 days ago. I played both Dead Cells and Hell Pie offline with no issues. I didn’t realize there was a problem with offline mode until watching this video. Maybe I just got lucky?

@@optchurch1402 Obviously I had already done that (also turned off cloud saves, and set to airplane mode), but nope, it does not work. You need to actually set Steam to offline mode... but you need an internet connection to do it. 🤦‍♂

I fixed it by just disabling wifi, diddnt go in offline mode. Just be persistent with it and it will eventually run

@@huihihiohjio9046 I'm not sure why the deck doesn't just say if you turn off the Wifi or otherwise can't connect to the internet "Do you want to switch to Offline Mode? Confirm/cancel" and... done. Then offer to switch back again when you're back in internet land. At least make the buttons in the settings work as you'd expect! Having to connect to the internet, in order to say you don't want to connect to the internet, seems crazy to me.

Same thing happened to me on my gaming laptop earlier this year. Went on a boat for 2 months without any internet. And I realised that, sadly, I couldn’t play any game for 2 months…

I have noticed that achievements don’t pop up when in offline mode. That needs to be fixed!

Hasn't that always been the case with Steam?

Next we need developers to fix offline play in games. Hitman 3 for example, is an excellent game to play on the deck but if you don't have an internet connection it will not allow you to simply progress in the game with unlocks. It's a single player game for Christ sake haha

The obnoxious limitations brought on by DRM stick out way more on Steam Deck than on a typical desktop setup. Mass Effect LE and anything using Ubisoft, EA, or Rockstar Games' unnecessary launchers on top of Steam...

i been talking about this offline mode topic for a long time i think steam offline mode needs work ...this needing to verify online even if you have the game downloaded or installing from backup valve need to work on their drm personally pc drm is horrible ...GOG approach is the best but GOG are behaving like fools not wanting to support linux complete jackasses

Most free wifi where I am also blocks Steam by default. So even if you can connect to them, you can't use it with Steam.

yes this is very true and telling why valve wouldn't improve offline mode until now when they re releasing a handheld for that very concept , that is like thinking backwards , people do not get handhelds to stay in their homes they get them to play anywhere so internet should of never been a factor always an option.

Hi LiamD, I discoverd a usability bug when using pihole as primary DNS server. In case pihole is down, SteamDeck OS have Wifi connection but has DNS is available. Deck Halo OS says no Internet available. This leads to the situation of endlos loading in Games, cause deck has wifi and games are thinking they have working internet... Two problems atm: You can't chance DNS Setting in Steam Deck Mode, cause the option is not available. If you switch to desktop mode, you can't change DNS either, cause steam deck keyboard only works when steam is started...and steam does not start if wifi without dns is there... The only option is to have keyboard attached, which I currently don't have... If fixed it various times at friends keyboard, but each Steam Deck OS Update the alternative DNS settings are gone and lead to the same situation. What's the best way to report such findings back to valve?

Being a portable device it should have had more security from release as well. Why is there no firewall? If your connecting to a public wifi it is open to being hacked. Why isnt it easier to add a vpn? I'm using Nordvpn and you have to disable the secure filesystem to install it. There's arch repo, dependencies to install and conf files to edit. It's just too difficult for a linux noob to do without errors and it will get wiped when steam os updates. 😞

Still waiting for my deck but just wanted to say, its kinda comforting knowing wifi hotspots is the uk arent any better than ones in the US 😆

The majority of offline mode problems are not directly Valve's problems. Just like in the mobile market, developers force people to be online for various non-player benefiting reasons. Valve is a store so they cannot force developers to have an offline mode. People need to speak with their wallets. Don't buy titles that don't support offline modes. Valve can assist in this space by having a tag in the store no different than the ones they currently do: Single-player, Steam Achievements, Full Controller support, etc... In the Google Play store, I can drill down inside of the game categories for "Offline" games.

THANK YOU, very few folks recognize this, even those that should know better. It's almost willful ignorance at this point.

I want to see Offline playtime tracking and better handling of Offline save data. I played about an hour of Spelunky 2 offline and when I went back online Steam acted like the only save data I had was the out of sync cloud save and I couldn't launch the game to continue the progress I'd made.

Yeah.. You would have to sync your local data to the cloud once back online. That's normal

On my Steam Deck it shows up as a preview/beta update, not stable.

If you're currently opted into Beta or Preview it likely will. However, it's a Stable update for all.

If Valve waited until everything was "perfect" the Deck would literally never launch. Getting the device into the wild with the understanding it's a work in progress is a MUCH better solution. Also, do you know that you can turn your phone, which I assume you have on you at all times when out of the house, into a wifi hotspot? Your magical device that's always connected to the internet can be made to share that connection with other devices, usually with just one push of a button. Hope that helps.

There's a difference between waiting on perfection, to actually having a handheld (designed to be taken with you) to have a properly working and decent offline mode. As for having a phone, data in the UK can be pretty expensive and in my city for example, there's a lot of really bad no-data spots. I get you're trying to be a smart-ass but it won't fly here.

Why they did not take kare of offline mode beforehand? Simple, it's a matter of priorities by far most users will be playing at (a) home with wifi. Other things where more important.

Valve, the beloved by all gamers. Ever since after the steam link app, they have continuously impressed me and gained my respect.

@@gamingonlinux Same settings as always. 720p for red dead and the re2 remake, no fsr. Red dead capped at 30 and the re2 remake capped at 40. Both games completely freeze for half a second or so and then start up as normal. Happens every few minutes or so

They NEED to improve the family sharing and bring it up to par with PlayStation and Xbox on SteamOS/ Deck.. its 2022 no damned reason in the world to lock a library if a game is being played .. never happens on PlayStation nor Xbox as share both of those libraries with my family

why would you not get one

One improvement that I think is needed is that if you switch to desktop mode when not connected, the steam controller is not enabled since steam client keeps trying to connect online. You have to use the touch screen to set it to offline before the controller resumes functioning

Yeah I get steam is online store but with the steam deck I wanna be able to play my games on the go offline with my saves without having to keep restarting at the beginning everytime im on the go

Let's hope Valve never sells out. They may not be perfect but they're about the last perfect gaming platform/service us gamer has that doesn't get short ended because of greed.

I think the Deck should automatically go into/out of offline mode based on whether it has a live connection or not. Manually changing this should be the exception, not the rule.

this is the future of handheld gaming! not the design, not the controller it's the open ecosystem what all other failed at or didn't even try/allow
