ProtonGE is perfectly fine and it has many improvements over Valve's Proton. The biggest feature is Async Shader Compilation. It basically renders the game without waiting for the shaders, so there is no shader compilation stuttering on games without shader cache, but it can show graphical issues due polygons not fully shadered. While this is an amazing feature, it is not supported by Valve just because unshadered polygons can be seen as transparent, so of course this can be exploited for wallhacking.

@@Qa_mook I only had to use it once so far (Resident Evil 0 to fix graphical issues) and I noticed the Steam Deck was running way hotter than it normally is and battery also depletes in like an hour.

@@RomainDelmaire agree, from my library there are very few games that don't run with default proton, only 1 game I use proton GE (dragon ball fighters Z) and 1 game an older version (king of fighters xiii) otherwise my library works well with current proton or experimental.

It should only be used when needed. In general, there's no reason to launch a game for the first time with anything else that the default proton version. If there are issues there then sure, you can try experimental or GE but otherwise, the default will work 90% of the time.

@@gamingonlinux exactly. GE is just an external case of experimental :-). It's good that it's there, but I think most people should not be bothered with the existence of GE (or experimental, next or hotfix). But for some it might just be what they need.

GE-Proton can be fine for some games, but as explained in the video it's not supported by Valve and has no QA testing on it and it can come with other issues. DXVK 2.0, also mentioned in the video, should work around needing the ASYC option due to the shader changes. I'm not saying people shouldn't use GE-Proton, but to use it only where it's actually needed.

I thought Next was just meant to be Experimental lol. As a side note, can you delete the older versions of proton? Going by the size of ProtonGE, they can take up quite a bit of space, which seems pointless when I imagine the large majority doesn't use anything below proton 7.04

Experimental is quite different to the normal versions of Proton, with plenty of extras not in the others yet. I believe you can just uninstall them as long as nothing is using them yes.

Yo, what are you using to get the protonDB ranking on the steam page? Is that on the steam client or is it a browser extension? Looks super nice and I wish I had it when looking at games. Love the steam deck plug-in but it only shows stuff in my library.

Oh shoots, tekken is now working fine. (well it already is using proton GE). But being an official proton. this is big.. i have to try more title with this. I think it is fast. tekken7 stayed 60fps the whole time. no dips

DXVK (part of Proton) currently builds shaders as you go, hence the stuttering.

I've just gotten my deck and saw next I've also heard recommendations to download and install proton on desktop immediately to help with games that you have ill keep an eye on proton next but probably not use it until I see some people recommend it.
