frankly as a Linux newbie, the problem is never how complex it is to do anything (using the Ubi connect launcher, etc) its how LONG it takes and how much fiddlin you have to do (go get that pack on github, extract it, copy it, go type that konsole line, etc etc). It always feels like linux user start with "its simple" then do a lotta things that someone with just the deck (not a usb c hub, keyboard, and mouse) will take ages to do.

Ironically it makes Valve's own brand and community stronger in that way, being open to customization and community projects makes them far stronger. The Steamdeck might not be a "Switch killer" but it will put Valve on the map and give the console makers something to think about, Microsoft in particular might be double concerned for Windows as this helps fuel Linux into becoming a full fledged and common alternative to their flawed OS

This is great. I hope they make a system for easier custom themes too. I'm not too good at CSS. I did a teeny tiny bit with some web design years ago. But I struggle to know which section affects what thing on the Steam Deck >_<. I really want to make some custom themes for this amazing piece of kit.

My second Deck should be here tomorrow (had issues w/ the screen on the first one). I'm super new to anything Linux so I appreciate how much they are doing to the system (and how easy they made it). Unrelated, but have you had any issues with Vampire Survivors saves not populating on the Steam Deck? I can play on my computer, but I was never able to get that save to transfer to the cloud.

@Gaming On Linux I followed this guide and it works like a charm! FYI: I did notice that CSS Loader went away in Game Mode, so I had to re add it in Desktop Mode be when I rebooted my Steam Deck, CSS Loader never came back up in the Quick Access Menu. Can anyone help?

Pretty cool I kinda feel the update should add the directories without needing to make them yourself but still pretty cool shows valve is listening. only thing missing is maybe allow boot animations in steam store in a deck only section to make everything automatic and official.

That custom boot you chose is awesome but wouldn’t transition seamlessly since I have multiple users on my Deck and a passcode. We need skip passcode and autologin to primary owner account on startup as a separate option or two!

Just because it's Linux, doesn't mean changing things specific to Steam would be easy. Valve naturally have various checks in place, and did before this update, that if you're not careful would overwrite your changes. What's the big deal? Uh, hello. Hardware vendors don't usually (read: ever?) let you just screw with their own stuff like this.

A couple of things that you could have added for clarity: 1. Once you do this, do you now go back out of Preview/Beta or do you stay on that? 2. Are there any requirements such as File size, dimensions, etc. for the video?

I’m not really sure how that’s unclear. You don’t magically keep features for Beta and Preview versions if you back out of them to Stable. That’s just not how software works 😅 Valve gave no size info. Just experiment.

Neat concept but makes booting into the Deck a little bit longer. I used some custom boots before this became official and it took even longer because every time it came up with, "Verifying installation...". I'll stick with the O.G. boot up animation. I like it.

Im having the same issue myself and haven’t figured it out (Edit i think it requires a specific encoding of av1 or something but I got it to work with a webm file that is encoded in av1 or something similar)

Slick is an understatement for that animation. The transition into the deck UI is so seamless, I'd guess this dude either took many screenshots to guide the final frames of his video, or he works at valve and had the CSS file for reference.

**UPDATE** - Valve decided to change the folder structure in a new Beta update. It's now: ~/.steam/root/config/uioverrides/movies/ If you don't have .steam for whatever reason it's: ~/.local/share/Steam/config/uioverrides/movies/ You still need to make the extra folders yourself.
