You can edit the Steam Deck controls to be mapped into anything, so it's just a matter of remapping to suit the game! It's a bit tedious if there's no good presets to be found, but very doable.

I was hoping you'd be talking about how to get Boxtron (from ProtonUp-Qt) to work on DOS items as a compatibility layer. I haven't quite figured out how to get that working myself yet. I do see you actually have an article in Gaming on Linux webpage from January 2020 that I hadn't noticed until now so I'll give that a read. :D
The way I've been playing DOS is via the DOSBox Pure core in Retroarch, that has been actually quite nice since I use EmulationStation-DE for *most* emulators already. I don't know if control schemes for DOSBox are being affected by the use of EmuDeck's configs, but I have to say I've had to do very little tweaking to get 100% controller support playing out-of-the-box in DOSBox Pure content.

Hello, this was very helpful but I'm not quite there: running your DOSBox launch command from Konsole with the file path as an argument will indeed launch the game like I want. However if I double click my executable I will get "Unknown error code 100 execvp: Exec format error." When I right click and to run it in Konsole, I will see "Could not start program '[path to my launcher]' with arguments '[path to my launcher]'" so it's like it misses the entire flatpak run instruction. Any idea what I've got wrong here?

@@DommelWommel Try putting `#!/bin/sh` in the first line of your .sh file. So the contents of your file should be two lines:

Final Final EDIT: Okay, so there were config files that the Heroic launcher had put into a different Support folder for some reason. I moved those files into the game's main folder and the game started working and launched fine through the Heroic launcher! But it runs GOG's default Windows version of DOSBox through Proton, so the performance is HORRIBLE. I don't know how to make native DOSBox work with it. EDIT EDIT EDIT: LOL, it didn't work with the Steam version of Dark Forces either. I must be doing something wrong, but I don't know what.
I tried this on a GOG version of Ultima 7. It opened up the DOSBox alright, but it didn't load up the game. The DOSBox view only got so far as having those line "Z:\>SET BLASTER" etc and an empty "Z:\>" below it. Perhaps I didn't write the correct directory or I targeted the wrong EXE.

@Jesse Foster Yes! I'll try to remember what I did... For GOG games one crucial thing is that the Heroic Games Launcher moves some important config files to a separate folder (which is in the game's folder still). You have to move those files into the game's main folder and the game should start working. But another issue was that the native DOSBox app didn't have permission to access the folders where the game's are stored at. So I had to use another program (maybe Flatseal?) to grant it those permissions.

Also worth mentioning that this way of doing it is mounting the game directory as your C drive and this is going to confuse some games that specifically look for files in C:\gamefolder\ (though this is pretty easy to fix)

An alternative way of running dos games using DOSBox-X available in the discovery store.
In desktop mode, create a new folder in the Desktop and name it dos. For our example, I'll use the dos version of Aladdin. Place the complete Aladdin folder containing the Aladdin.exe and the numerous data files into your dos folder.
In a blank area of the desktop, click L2 and select CreateNew Text File. Enter text filename as b.bat. Double click on this newly created file to edit the contents. Type the following...
cd Aladdin
aladdin
Save this b.bat file and copy it to the dos folder.
Return to Gaming Mode and run DOSBox-X
Select the Configuration tool under the Main tab. Select the AUTOEXEC.BAT button (bottom/right)
In the displayed text box type the following - pressing enter after each line.
mount c \home\deck
c:
cd desktop
cd dos
dir/w
Note the different \ and / symbols.
Click ok followed by Save & Restart
Confirm your Dos directory is displayed.
In order for the game to run at a playable speed, Select
Emulate CPU speed under the CPU tab and pick Pentium 60Mhz.
Click on any black screen area to remove the drop down menus.
Bring up the keyboard with Steam+X and press b followed by enter. All being well, Aladdin should run.
Once you get the hang of this you can use a-z for 26 games and easily run any one with steam+X and your single letter of choice - providing you can remember which letter selects which game! There are dos commands which allow you to create an onscreen menu for file selection. Google's your friend here.
