Liam hear me out please, you need to buy a spare NVMe drive, and a nice but not too expensive enclosure for it. And the moment SteamOS drops for everyone you post a video where you installed it on this external fast but not to expensive drive, and boot from it on a few computers :D Good content, hopefully you would do this video if you think it can make the money back for you

People use Ubuntu because of a rep that its easy to use and well supported. It is true its widely used enough that the support is often very good, so people can get solutions to issues fast. Everyone I know well that uses Ubuntu have barely (if ever) tried anything else.

@@techmouse. Thanks, I'll keep an eye out. I think the main ones I'm looking for are insurgency sandstorm and MW2. Although to be honest until I can reliably expect 99.9 percent of games to work, I can't really replace windows. My hope is the popularity of the deck, and the soon to be released ISO tool, will mean that the anti-cheat makers will natively port to linux. I think Ubuntu is the most popular for the same reason Windows is so dominant, it's the only distro normal people know about and they do not check out alternatives. We see the exact same problem in elections where most normies just vote for the established parties without much thought.

@@tropicalfruit4571 I think games prices is a non issue if you can wait. Used market is a thing and so are sales. For the idea that upgrades are cheaper than buying a new gen console, It’s highly situational. Right now the best PC we own is an AM4 platform. @@DavideDavini Ah well, maybe someone else will find it helpful then. But I still stand by what I said, initial cost is higher for PCs for long term PCs are cheaper. And I've built PCs that were rather low quality but better than what I had at the time, and also PCs where price cutoff was "just not go too crazy" and yeah, building a nice PC is expensive but for just getting into PC world with a serviceable machine it's competitive with consoles pricing; it's just a bunch more work.

@@tropicalfruit4571 I appreciate the sentiment but I’ve been building custom PCs since the 90s. Not to mention custom servers for work. :) Plus been playing videogames for even longer, but that’s beside the point. Not that I can’t learn something new about it, of course, but I kinda know what I’m talking about. Also, if I may. Building a PC from scratch is stupid expensive and consoles are way, way cheaper than a reasonable PC build. Even factoring in games. Especially now with PS+ and GP. In my country at least. Although, the US seems just slightly better. Other places I don’t know 🤷‍♀️. PS. I can’t stand Windows. There’s no worry I would ever buy it at all. 😂 Cheers and happy gaming.

I'd say it's a common misconception that the "PC gaming is expensive". The GPU market is absolutely fucked but here's a tip, if you're not willing to sell a kidney for a new GPU try to find a relatively recent used card and buy everything else new. Something like RTX2080 will not have been used a lot (unless someone mined on it) and it's still a decent card. The rest is really not that expensive, proper good CPU is 300 bucks and that's 2nd most expensive part in a PC. The trick is to go for the good stuff but the state of art stuff. It will all come out to be more than a console but keep in mind that games are cheaper. These days you pay 70-80 dollars for new releases on consoles but on PC you can et those games on sale easily. The not brand new games you can probably buy a key for for smaller price if there are no sales on Steam. Another tip is NEVER buy windows and office from microsoft, just never ever. Go to any website that sells windows for cheap, get a code for 5 bucks and be on your way. If you're buying laptops or pre-built PCs ask them to not include windows too because that costs ridiculous amounts of money. I thought about the games pricing on consoles too and came at a conclusion that if I bought a PS5 and 17 games for it it would all come out costing around as much as I paid for my PC parts new. For most people it would be PS5 and 8-9 games (I have a little bit of an over the top PC) which honestly is ridiculous. I have 150 games on Steam, more games outside of it, 80% of them bought on sales and some time ago when I had less games I counted it all up to see how much I spent on Steam and for what was then a 100 games collection it was a laughably low number. I also like to think that while I use my PC mostly for media consumption everybody has to do some work on a computer every now and then, it's the 21st century after all, so why buy a console AND a laptop, which is what people tend to do, when you can buy a PC and have both in one box. Many people don't even need more than 60fps and that's really easy to achieve these days. If you have an itch for PC gaming ask someone you know that knows PCs or even find somebody on reddit if you have no PC friends and ask for guidance, I'm sure they would show you a reasonable price-performance ratio machine.

Activision is the last big publisher with incompatible anticheat software. If we can lobby them hard enough to get ricochet ported to linux that's ALL the current and future call of duty games playable :) They've already said it's a no for writing the kernel driver for Anticheat (for now) but they've also said they wont penalise workarounds. For now, Windows is growing less and less necessary for a full PC gaming experience :)

The Steam Deck got me back into Steam after years of being idle - but it's unsuited for many of the types of games I like to play due to the small screen. Releasing SteamOS officially for linux desktop would seal the deal; being able to play older games I can't on the mac because they're 32 bit, and windows games I can't because LOL windows on linux makes spending money with Steam (and the Humble Bundle!) far more attractive than it's been in the past.

Windows for Music/Video Production and gaming and now Steam Deck for Gaming as well. There is no need to become tribal about the OS you use. Use what works best for your needs. Linux has been around since 1991 and doesn't have any specialist apps. If you only use your computer for browsing and word processing, you can probably get away with Linux or Mac. If you want to do anything specialist. You are definitely going to struggle.

I used Ubuntu Linux in 2010 and 2011, and while I thought it was cool, the fact that I couldn't run most of my software ruined the experience for me. So I left when I went to high school because my hard drive that dual booted Linuz died in late 2011. When I came back in 2018, I almost gave up for good, because GNOME 3 was so much worse than GNOME 2 or Unity that Ubuntu had used before (as a former Windows user) that it was very diffcult to use. But I'm glad I stuck with it, and in 2021, with the announcement of Windows 11, I made the jump over to EndeavourOS, and I've been on that distro ever since. The fact that most of my software (as a software developer) just works with tools such as Bottles and Wine, and now almost all of my games work with Proton, means I probably won't be back to Windows anytime soon. In fact, why settle for a bad clone of KDE Plasma when I can use the real thing? And why should I left Micro$haft be in control of my experiences when _I_ could be?
