@@MobileDecay Hmm. From what I found being posted online, as recent as a couple weeks ago, it sounds like the issue stems from formatting the sd card for a SECOND time (using the steam deck's formatting tool specifically, not from any other dedicated formatting tool). Id be curious if you did a similar thing..? Still a pretty ridiculous bug to have not patched yet.

@@gamingonlinux I had the same issue on my very first SanDisk micro sd I formatted and it came up with a error which was very worrying. I tried again and the same error. I thought I bought fake micro sd but it definetly is a real one. So what I did was loaded up my Garuda Linux pc and removed the exfat partition with kde partition manager so only unallocated space and then formatted it in the Steam Deck and it worked fine. I probably could have just went to desktop mode and used kde partition manager there also. I'm not sure what the issue is but a bug with the built-in formatter. So if you have a issue with formatting a micro sd in the Deck try what I did. Saves sending it back or throwing it away when its not broke.

They changed the way they format them in a previous release to be a quick format, which has likely helped. I think most being bricked were just crap cards though tbh :)

It's far better to do this than to cram one that's too big inside it.

Those drives are just 2230 SSDs on a 2280 board, they're designed so you can install them in anything by cutting the board to size. Specs should be roughly the same as the Deck's OEM drive.

@@Ford.Prefect It's as what doragasu mentioned. Also, the chip can't be too throttled, otherwise, there will be no power delivered to the hardware and it crashes. So: - Without thermal pad - With a heater and isolator on top - With extra power consumption (for the higher power SSD) What a recipe for disaster...

@@Ford.Prefect Not an expert on electronics thermal details, and I have not read the datasheet, but **maybe** the up to 130 deg spec is for the **junction** temperature while the 85 deg spec is for the chip casing temperature, that is lower than the junction temperature.

This chip is a mystery to me. I downloaded the spec PDF from the manufacturer. On one page it says, that the absolute maximum the chip can tolerate while charging is 85 degrees. On another page, they mention "Thermal Foldback". "Junction temperature when charge current is reduced, programmable from 85 to 130 degrees in 5 degrees steps, default value 115 (!!!) degrees. Now, that's not all. "The charge current is decreased by 5% of the fast-charge current setting for every degree (!!!) that the junction temperature exeeds the thermal regulation temperature. "This ensures MAX77960/MAX77961 (variants of the chip) reduces the current to 0A by the time junction temperature is above 20 degrees of programmed loop set point. So. My conclusion is: The chip has thermal management and can reduce charging to a complete halt, if temperature of the chip is too high. If Valve did a good engineering job, they configured the charging IC so that it would start throttling charge current in 5% steps once the temperature is one degree above 85 degrees (threshold). It's odd that in the tech specs temperatures like 115 or even 130 are mentioned. I thought the chip would already be dead if it would reach such temperature. If you want to have a look at the specs yourself. head over to the website of maxim integrated and grab the spec PDF of MAX77960/MAX77961. It's an interesting read and the IC itself is super efficient: 97% power efficiency. Pretty top notch part that Valve used in Steam Deck.

@@gamingonlinux how abput saving the cache on sd card. Once the sd card is put in the deck copies the cache from the sd card onto the bether ssd / emmc storage. Once the sd card gets removed the deck automatically removes the cache on the deck. And the cache stoll remains on the sd cards woth its games.

Yeah the 64GB model is definitely an interesting one. I hope Valve comes up with an official way to move the cache as it would solve a lot of problems.
