@@TetsugakuSan SteamOS was announced as unfinished when it was released anyways. Since then we’ve got touchpad type and now this within a year of its launch and through multiple frequent updates, so i’d say that’s great.

It's already happened. I've been an on-and-off Linux user and Windows gamer for the last ~20 years, I made a couple really hard pushes to go Linux-only over that time, and always ended up paying for my passions. With the Steam Deck launch, it's dragged a couple of slow-burn projects into the light and got a lot of excellent visibility onto things that have been getting better for a long time now. With Deck's launch, Proton is getting a ton of front-and-center spotlight time, and it's amazing to see where it's come in just a few years. Add in things like Chiaki, Greenlight, Heroic, Lutris, GeForce Now, Stadia, Moonlight, and gaming on Linux is way more practical than it used to be!

I do all my gaming on linux now. No need to keep track of licenses. Formatting new drives is easy. Things mostly just work. Thanks to steam and proton.

I switched back a week ago. And it's so different when it comes to gaming now. It's took a huge leap. I had been on linux for years, but last year I couldn't stay on linux no more. I gave up on the year for linux, but now I'm back baby! And it's better than it ever was ! I am playing bo3 zombies online and multiplayer. Never thought I'd see the day. Same with bo1 and bo2. My favorite games of all time. And I heard they're working on the master chief collection multiplayer. I am having a blast with linux and I decided to go with Arch by the way !

Something broke proton from 6.3-8 upwards this month. At the beginning of the month I was able to use 6.3-8 to fix an issue in couple of games where I was getting the TV bars for cutscenes or random language switch during the cutscenes but not anymore. Something happened...

I just got my SteamDeck a couple days ago, and the keyboard in KDE when trying to install protonup-qt was seriously aggravating. I'm not running beta, so I am very much looking forward to this hitting stable.

@@Locke99GS ah, fantastic. Once you have set up Proton Up QT you can actually set it up to work on the Steamdeck UI, so you don't have to enter desktop mode everytime you need to use it. Setting it up this way was super fantastic for me.

I suppose I could have hooked up a spare keyboard and monitor to the Desk and done what I needed to do, but here's the thing: I'm laying in bed and I only need to be on the desktop for like a minute to install a single package. I simply don't want to get up and hook up peripherals.

If you have the resources, I highly suggest using a dongle or docking station with your Steamdeck. I use a dongle to hook mine up to a two monitor setup along with a keyboard, mouse, and ethernet. The Steamdeck, aside from being a gaming device, double as a fantastic PC. Going on to desktop mode this way made the experience WAY more pleasurable.

@@gamingonlinux battlenet was working fine for a while but recently for me i cant open it any more (it says missing dll error). This was also i problem on windows it seems so im not sure how it will be resolved. Its really frustrating I hope it gets fixed before the launch of ow2.

Blizzard don't support Linux / Deck at all, so it's not really up to them. No doubt the Wine team will find a fix and an eventual Proton update will have it in.

OK why would you want to stream from one deck to a second deck? I've been using software like splashtop to stream my pc to mobile devices (mainly as tech support for my mum) and to stream my pc to the main TV but I can't think of a reason to stream a deck onto another deck?

I think that feature is used for game sharing the same game with a buddy that has another deck on the same wifi as you and the buddy you are sharing with dont need to have the game installed. Probably useful for two player coop games.

So got a steam deck and everytime I try to format my sd cards I get an error. Steam deck is fully updated. I've used the cards for other things. A switch a raspberry pi and other things. Is there anyway to fix this problem?

I also had this problem. I'm not sure what the problem was but what I did was go into desktop mode and format it using kde partition manager. Make sure you select your micro sd card. It should be mmcblk0p1. You will need to unmount it and delete the existing partition. Then you can make a new ext4 partition and format it. Go back to gaming mode. In the settings go to the storage section and make sure you set the micro sd as the default storage so games will be installed on it. Hope that helps.

the keyboard improvements are great..... right until the keyboard strikes do not register anything and text entry fields remain blank. having to use a bluetooth keyboard for anything atm because the virtual keyboard only sems to work in steamos mode and does nothing in desktop mode.

I wonder if they fixed the issue where if you search in discover in desktop mode, the cursor stays in one place and replaces each letter as you type? Due to this I just download the Flatpak ref file from Flathub instead of searching in discover. Maybe I’m the only one with this issue?

That doesn't happen to me... discover and typing there works. I have had times where I run into the letters not showing up bug mentioned in this video about the fix they did.

I think it is cool and all they addressed a streaming issue, but for the life of me I can't think why anyone would want to stream from one Deck to another unless it was addressing a remote play together issue cause someone was an impromptu TMNT lan party, Only a couple of my friends have a Deck so we really haven't done this yet.

I still can't easily use my 2 TB exFat external SSD yet my 1 TB one works had this same problem on manjaro which is also arch based BUT since manjaro has the AUR I was able to fix it, but not here on steam deck ):

Can’t wait when Valve put out steam os for desktop PCs. Finally something to challenge bloated windows for pc gaming. I tried that haloISO (steam deck os) and all it does is crash on my 2700x/16GB/GTX 1080ti/Ssd,at least in game mode. But once you get to desktop mode. It runs fine. Can’t wait for officially steam os for pc that has proper Nvidia support.
