Mine too. Already use mostly Flatpacks on my current PC. For almost any normal use case there is no reason for installing normal packages. Only if you want to develop on the SD it might be necessary but there are ways to circumvent that too. Yes Flatpacks are bigger but since i managed to kill and/or cripple many Linux--Distros over the years i tend to value System-Stability over everything else. The approach by Valve with the A/B partition is very good even if an update breaks your OS the boot-loader just falls back to partition A/B and boots up the older version.

Thanks for the video! The way you described it, is there also a user "partition" that is rw too? I understand Valve wanting to rewrite the "system" partition when upgrading, and therefore leaving that ro. It would be a pain to have to recover/restore your data and files after every upgrade. The appeal of the Steamdeck for is that it is both a console and a linux computer. It is hard to put together small-form factor computer anywhere near the price point that Valve has manged to do! Still in the queue for Q2 for my deck!

@@johnchik If you have the know-how to redirect it, I imagine it would work fine but I think something like that is out of scope for my beginner friendly guides :) Swapping SD cards is fine, just click it in and they come out....sometimes if you flick it too quickly it might fire out at you though 😅😅

@@gamingonlinux Thanks! So if that is the case, it would be possible to do a "local" install of software in /home and then modify the PATH variable to make sure the shell finds it. By the way, what are the sizes of the system and user partitions (are there others?). I reserved the 256GB version because most of my work is cloud-based, but I need to install specific packages (i.e. Anaconda/JupyterLab for Data Analysis) which are typically done in your user directory. On a totally unrelated note, how easy is it to switch microSD cards? My plan is to put my games on SD's and limit the use of the 256GB SSD memory on my deck for games. Do you need to shut it down, or do an unmount and remount? Is the console able to recognize that there is a different "library" of games on the SD card quickly? Again thanks!

Yes, your /home is writeable and anything left in will be fine just like Flatpaks.

Could you please explain how to reset the sudo password on steam deck? not sure how to get to bios mode without a keyboard on startup I did a factory reset on my steam deck but apparently it didnt change the sudo password and its giving me a proper headache.

Seems that one reason people are doing this is to install drivers to get the Xbox wireless adapter working, since the lag can be atrocious when connecting Xbox One controllers to the Deck with bluetooth.

in terms of productivity flat pack has a lot of the tools you need the problem is in terms of system utilities it's missing a lot for example you can't even get the uncomplicated firewall which if you're going to log into a public network or use it as a mobile desktop you do need a firewall installed that's the problem with the way it's configured
