@@Luincir would take it over the severe overheating I have on my MacBook and old laptop, the latter went through so much thermal paste and would get hot from basic internet usuage.

@@thetoasterisonfire2080 gls delivered it, got an email telling me that they brought it to one of their pickup shops. Thing is any "shop" can take part in their delivery system, the shop owner told me a very incoherent story about how he declined the package. I believe the risk for him is very low if he only does that rarely, worth it with enough criminal energy... Valve really should have more discreet packaging.

I would argue that the fan is the only bad thing about the Steam Deck. It has a very aggressive fan curve going up in increments. Even at 3W it is going from 0 to audible often. The fan is triggered at 45 celsius (already) and spins up quite a lot until it temperature go down below 40 degrees. So you can't have a silent, passive fan experience with the Steam Deck. It would be great if the fan had much lower range and didn't ramp up in increments. But rather a slow curve. 200rpm-max. The device sounds more like- and acts more like a laptop than a Switch. It's an awesome device, don't get me wrong, but I silently long for a fan revision + sparepart or a fan mod, or a better fan curve :)

It's not really an issue, just one model of fan is higher pitched than the other. still doesn't even remotely compare to the jet engine of a fan my laptop has.

Luckily I'm happy with my 512 model Steam Deck's fan. It's audible if everything is quiet but blends in pretty well once you got sound going. If it's quiet it doesn't shriek or whistle - it sounds like a wind breeze or something. It happened repeatedly to me that I thought it was some sound effect of a game I was playing or the weather outside until I realized it was the fan.

sounded like it was scraping on something really harshly... or something just went bad for some odd reason.

I had a similar sounding fan on my laptop. The fan blade was pretty much touching the fan frame and thats what made the noise. Maybe it is same issue with steam deck?

I looked inside and it looked incredibly clean, couldn't seen anything at all inside the fan and nothing rattled. Various sources I spoke to suggested the same thing: a bad bearing.

Valve need to source some better fans before mine is ready to ship. Fans don't usually go wrong so quickly so this must have been bad luck or bad manufactoring.

Valve has said they are working on trying to fix the fan problem by either replacing the whining fans and/or finding a better source of fans. IFixIt is looking into selling replacement fans if they can source enough of them. So what is it you're unsure of?

They're already working on it, so those of us in Q3 and after probably won't be dealing with this fan issue. Unfortunately this what happens when your in the first group of buyers on new products. You get to be the guinea pigs to test the hardware and software to see if it works correctly as well as having to deal with the early issues.

I don't think I've ever heard of a device that was designed in such a way that would break an expansion card in this manner. That said, by casually looking at the case and knowing the issue, I can easily see how it happened. My Deck has been rock solid... no fan issues (sound or performance), buttons are perfect and battery life is great. I'm mainly a retro/indie gamer, so I'm not stressing this thing out like most people will (except for the dpad).

How loud has the fan been in your experience? I have seen a wide gamut of testimonials from people who say it is unbearably loud, all the way to it’s fine. I’m wondering if it varies from deck to deck (or maybe different fans?)

My 512GB unit has the same high pitched fan noise. And it smells really bad, as burned plastic. I doubt that this gadget will last the guarantee.

Find an interesting how quick they were to you but then people who have gotten their deck stolen or lost by FedEx they are not so quick to help. I'm glad you got yours don't get me wrong I just think it's funny. It makes sense to get whoever Creator was is but now good content to get into hype up for the steam deck interested in it and showing off videos of it but at the same time it's like you know people are having issues and grievances so. This is definitely been a tough task for Val and I hope that they're able to fulfill all the orders by Q3 and Q4 and everybody has a relatively good experience. If they can manage that the steam deck to me is a victory on all fronts.

My deck has a faint whistle. Apparently, not all whistling fans are created equal. Some of my friends have far worse whistling fans on their decks, other's are whisper quiet. Valve's official position is that some fan noise is to be expected, so no RMA on screeching fans

@@gamingonlinux that's what I figured Valve would take a heavier PR hit not shipping any decks, but it's costing them a lot of time and money responding to these RMAs and complaints Personally I'm gonna see if I can get my hands on a quiet fan when ifixit gets theirs, and just use the deck as is

I'm going to assume it's a component sourcing issue, with multiple fans to ensure they can get more Decks out. That said, I can't see them sticking with this whistling one given all the complaints I keep seeing.

I can tell u that my steam deck has no issues hardware wise but software absolutely awful. I do not hate Linux but the proton and game combatility issues is bad. Not to mention desktop mode is inferior experience in my opinion. When working it works fine but I think I'm gonna end up installing windows via duel boot. It's too much games that I can't play because of combatility issues.

Lots of people are waiting for thier 512gb model.

I was really hoping it was older units that had the worse fan not the newer ones, but I guess who knows when your replacement was manufactured compared to the original... or do you know?

I would say a bad fan bearing sometimes dust makes fans sound like that but its too new that sucks though. I haven’t got mine yet it should be any day now but been hearing about bad fans and problems with the B button sticking.

They sourced out the fans to a couple companies maybe more so its luck of the draw.

That's a shame. I've been aware of it breaking SD cards during disassembly since the LTT teardown back in February. I got lucky with a quiet fan on my unit. Hope your replacement is issue-free!

Sounds to me like something, like some lint perhaps, may have gotten sucked into the fan. That is just speculation of course.

I replaced mine via RMA process because of the fan noise, tho a whine not that one.

2 steam deck issues. When the 64 is full its buggy. So dont even install small games on the internal storage of the 64 gb version. Downloading and installing games on a sd card via ubuntu doesnt work, even tho its both linux... i formated the sd card on the deck first and then downloaded games via my ubuntu pc. I wasted 8 hours... shouldve tested it with 1 game first. My goal was to download games via my pc and steam deck. Another issue is that the deck and my pc shared the bandwith and it wasnt faster at all. Instead of 8mbs i downloaded on both with 4 mbs... bizzarly when i downloaded on 2 separated pc with different accounts on the same wöan router they both downloaded at 7 mbps... If you change the sd card make sure the steam deck is completely shut down...

@@gamingonlinux oh. Ok thisbis true but. You wont be able to disagree on this one. The file system of the steam deck is confusing when installing game launchers or other windows programms :). Why does it have to make different long numbers for different installations... my steam deck lost the ubi amd rockstar launcher on non steam games. I ended up judt reinstalling both.

@@VIDE0G4M3Enj0YER Well, it's not a case of Linux being complicated, it's just that you're not supposed to do it like that, and even on Windows if the Deck used that, you would still need the correct folder structure. Anything you've not done before can look complicated :)

@@gamingonlinux damn... i thought the steam deck does that automatically while formating the sd card... this is why i hate linux. Sometimes its just relly complicated... the main issue also beeing that ubuntu has a really low write speed on sd cards while copying huge files. But directly downloading and installing on the sd card works... a big cabiat of linux. Nonetheless i love the deck.
