I know there are plenty of valid critcisms against what I'm about to say, but I'm honestly not that bothered about native Linux binaries and don't mind if we become a drop-in replacement for Windows. When I play half the games in my Steam library, which are Windows titles, once they are running well I honestly don't give their "non-native" status another thought, much like I'm not bothered that the games I'm using in DOSBox aren't Linux ports either.
The thing is, if we have a very high compatibility rate with Windows titles, Linux desktops could genuinely become a cheaper and more reliable replacement that could be used by companies like Walmart. So far we have been in the position of chasing the moving target of Windows, but older versions of Windows (say, up to Windows 10 and no further) could become a lingua franca of computing, and developers may end up only wanting to programme for maximum support, which would mean older versions of Windows, whose software will run on Linux and Mac, and anything else that can run Proton.
