Does any onw know if it's running Docker underneath or is it some other container runtime? Still, I can see how this would useful for setting up a dev environment, as much as I like docker, sometimes it can be a PITA to get things setup.

Informative video. Thank you. This is like how Chrome OS allows you to run Linux Apps. Chrome OS is a lightweight Linux operating system with a locked filesystem. When you enable Linux support, Chrome OS installs a Debian container by default, though other distros can be installed by adding different containers. Even a Windows container (developed by Parallels desktop) is available on enterprise Chromebooks. And Valve is working with Google on a Steam container for Chromebooks with Intel i5 / i7 EVO processors, etc.

There needs to be people in the UK who can offer services for steam deck owners. I have no idea what im doing when it comes to this kind of video. im just a console gamer who moved over to Steamdeck so I'm a novice. Ive got a few Switch games working and i have a massive collection of retro games but not got them on the deck yet. i know i haven't scratched the surface of what i can do with the deck. Would be great to hire someone well known and trustworthy to work on my deck.

This is awesome! Although I don't have a SD, I was exactly wanting something like this! I have a networking course on my university and for some reason the professor wants us to use an specific version of Packet Tracer, which is not available on AUR (yes I use Arch, btw) so I found some mirrors with this specific Linux version and well ofc it's .deb for Ubuntu, I tried many ways to install it but without success, through bottles I could get it working but with bugs, only thing left (without a Windows VM) was to package it myself but would be a pain for me, so now Distrobox seems to be my saviour, and now there's also many other scenarios that I want to try with it.
Thanks for the video! And what a good coincidence...

Man, oh man, thank you for covering this. I was sure hoping that someone would develop something like this. Because I just don't understand why Apps have never went into a "containerized format"; well, I guess you have Flatpak and Snap, but I just think each should install into their own little box. Then, if you have problems, just delete them. But, I'm coming from Windows, so that is something that I wish MS would have focused on, early on. Anyway, thanks for helping me understand this, as I slowly become comfortable thinking through a Linux-viewpoint. [SUBBING]

I can navigate to the binary with the distrobox container but it doesn't see it. 'ls" shows it but when i run with a "./" it says there is no file or directoy with that name. Wouldn't it be slow and restricted, due to limited access to hardware?

@@gamingonlinux Yeah, Walled garden is a bit heavy, though having to unlock the filesystem to run pacman or install AUR packages is annoying, especially if you don't have a USB hub or a Bluetooth keyboard like when I first got my deck.
In an aside, I can't believe how far the steam deck community has gone in just the time since I got my deck (Last September (Just in time for my birthday 😁)) at first changing the intro video involved moving files around by hand and now I've got a plugin in gamemode that can change it on the fly.

Hmmm, wouldn't say it's a walled garden since you can still use Flatpak and Direct Downloads of anything third-party. The OS protection can be disabled but it's there for stability, since it's more like a console experience.

i resolved it by removing the /home/your-username/.local/podman directory first and rerun the second "curl" command

If you install those distros in Distro Box, does that mean you can install different desktop features from those distros? Say for example, if i were to install Ubuntu in Distro box on my SteamOS konsole, would i be able to add the GNOME dock to my Arch Linux KDE desktop?

do i have to use the konsole to launch these ui apps? could i create desktop shortcuts? or even steam ui shortcuts? does ubuntu need to be launched every time i want to run one of these apps after booting SteamOS? and lastly, is there any performance impact by using a container like this? I ask all this because i want to install an android emulator which isn't possible without removing the write protection from SteamOS or using windows, I'm still waiting on my 1TB ssd for that.

This doesn't work for me. When I try to enter the DistroBox, it says 'Installing basic packages...' and after a while it shows 'Error: An error occured'. What's going on?

if you could update the install script for podman, the current script in your description is "deprectate and unsupported" so it says

There's one issue when running vivaldi from distorbox - there is no sound. Still haven't figured out the way to make it work.

one question. and bare with me, im still new to linux so im still unsure how any of this works, it all seems like magic to me.
After installing everything id want, would it still work offline?
my biggest concern is usage without a connection to wifi because i move around a lot and ive been using my deck for just about everything that i could use it for.

So... I am lost. Why would I want this again? Pretty much all debs you would need ARE avalible in SteamOS through arch... except a few things that are SO niche that you probably aren't using a deck for them anyway. Arch/SteamOS already comes with the one desktop environment that ISN'T "junk that makes macOS look good by comparison"; KDE, and even if you DID want a different UI for some reason, distrobox doesn't seem to just allow you to use another DE. So.... what's the point of this again?

If you need a certain implementation of Linux to use an app, or to build one from source, or you need a box that isn't immutable unlike SteamOS, that'd be your best bet. Other than that you wouldn't need it for anything if it doesn't fit your use case.

... But, can you operate on Disks and Partitions in the Root FS from it? I mean, the USB storage at least, Ubuntu has WAY better apps... Basically everything about Ubuntu is better... I wish Steam would build an "SteamBuntuOS" release for "Devs" and such... Maybe someone can recompile the kernel for an Ubuntu Installation or steam OS? Man that would be Great 👍
