It never ceases to amaze me just how capable the Steam Deck is. It can function as a game console with a user friendly UI, an emulation beast or a portable streaming device.

So, is this shader issue the reason why my 512gb keeps stutering so badly in just the intro? Cause people are reporting stable 60 fps on deck and yet my game is anything but that.

@Gaming On Linux okay thanks. Getting a bit deja vu on some Nintendo emulation. Guess I'll just need to deal until it can cache enough of it. Think mutatar put it best. I'd rather wait a hour or so while the game compiles shaders to have a smoother xp

@HippeusOmega Nothing extra is needed. No matter the settings, they all use shaders and all need to be in a cache for it to be smooth.

@gamingonlinux would u recommend I change anything on my end to help? Using Steam OS latest stable version. It's on my internal 512gb Nvme. Then for settings I put it in window mode 720p with textures on medium. Or is this something that i'm just going to need to deal with until it caches enough of the shaders?

Yeah, I think a lot of Steam Deck content creators just aren't explaining the shader stutter or choose to video after they've already done bits to not show the stutter to make their videos look better. I prefer the honest approach, tell people exactly how it is.

What's amazing is that I played this on the PSP, which was the most capable handheld at the time... and now I'm playing it on the Steam Deck, which is the most capable handheld at the time. Dejavu!

@JeyVGaming hi! So that command in conjunction with GE Proton allows proton to asynchronously compile the shaders, so the game keeps processing frames while the shader builds instead of pausing.

By the way, to fix the shader issues I'm running Proton GE with the launch command "DXVK_ASYNC=1 %command%" .... with that I have zero stutters.

I was able to fix the massive stutters/hangs I was getting. Where it was going from 60fps to single digits and hanging for a few seconds. Not sure if it was a combination of things I did or one particular thing. But it has given me a lot more smoother 40fps experience at max settings. Still some minor dips but nowhere near as bad it was. Updated to Steam OS 3.4 preview build Set Game to 720p as resolution in game properties Using Proton GE 7-41 DXVK_ASYNC=1 under launch options

I completed this on the psp. I have such a big catalog of games to get through. I am currently playing ff14, Gotham knights, and Witcher 3 on my desk and Linux desktop. Maybe when I get caught up I will give this game a go.
