I’m very curious but when switching to Windows version will the “wallpaper engine” on steam work for it? And is it safe to keep it on like for example if I am on steam itself and not on windows will it keep running wallpaper engine in the background and destroy the battery? I just really want a moving wallpaper for when I switch to windows version but don’t know how ethical it is on steam deck with its uniqueness would love to see how Wallpaper engine works on steam deck

There are a lot of Core[x] programs, there is even a desktop environment ! I don't see many people talking about them, so seeing even one app being mentioned as an alternative to other on-screen keyboard is pretty cool !

I hope valve fixes a lot of bugs. many USB-c hubs are not working which makes it impossible for me to connect my keyboard and mouse and the deck to a monitor :(

This is why i think Gnome 40/42 would have been a better option for the steam deck, their UI is more touch friendly and it has a built in onscreen keyboard.

Is there a way to get it to stay in “small mode” ? I tried poking around in the config files and couldn’t find an option. Would love to have it stay that way when I launch it as the full size one is too big.

It seems to start as whatever mode you *didn't* select last time. So start CoreKeyboard, manually toggle the mode to the one you don't want (large in your case), then reboot. It should now start as small, and should remain that way unless you manually toggle it again.

Ridiculous how Steam makes us jump through so many hoops for something as simple as bringing up a keyboard. Even the simplest of phones can automatically bring up the keyboard when you click a text field

@@silverdragonslair now, yes. I made that comment before the updates. Before, even in the steam deck interface the keyboard would not automatically bring up. They fixed that issue about 2 weeks ago though

To be fair, the actual real steamdeck interface does bring up keyboard, linux desktop was not made with that sort of interactions intended most likely.

Thank you for this, I find core keyboard much easier to use than the steam keyboard. FYI for anyone else you can set it to launch from a keybind through the system settings. Go to the shortcuts section, add application, and set whatever keybind you want. Then in the steam controller config add that keybind to whichever button you want, you can press 'Y' to toggle a multi button key bind. Still haven't figured out how to close it or the default keyboard with a button press though

Just FYI if you edit the CoreKeyboard entry in autostart and add -t to the command line (application tab) the keyboard will start minimized when you switch to desktop mode.

Even with the full keyboard layout, it's missing the basic functionality to do simple Linux things like "use vim to edit a file" due to the lack of most punctuation. Shift doesn't actually shift any of the keys except caps letters. This keyboard helped a lot compared to the included one, but it's not quite enough to get into a proper troubleshooting mode like a normal Linux box. (...and there are MANY.)

Solved the issue, CTRL-ALT-DEL, reboot and DL a different virtual Keyboard. This one is called Florence and I can exit it AND move it around!

Try holding the steam button then tapping "X" rather than both together, it's a bit janky but once I started doing that it's pretty reliable. The steam keyboard itself is absolute pants though when you're trying to type using the touchscreen - sometimes it completely misses inputs despite getting haptic feedback on the button press.

You didn't show it switching to full mode witch makes it more useful than the normal keyboard assuming the normal keyboard is working properly. Also your video has the windows keyboard for some reason witch may work better than the one on deck because I didn't remember it not typing things or deleting everything you are typing mid type.

What keyboard are you using at the beginning of the video? The blue one. It looks like its steamdeck but ive tried everything to undock the keyboard and no one on any forum can figure out how. All I want is an invisible keyboard that only shows the highlighted key. Or at least make that black background transparent. I don't understand why no way to adjust location or background color of the steamdeck keyboard. Just so they can sell those stupid colored backgrounds on the steamdeck shop I guess.
