Other handhelds don't interest me because they come with windows.
As a Linux user I know I can't just go and demand the manufacturers give me support for my OS of choice, only windows users can get away with that kinda nonsense.

The honeymoon period has worn off for me for my Steam Deck, and I'm still using it as much as I did. Valve having oversight over the hardware and software feels like Apple magic without the Apple walled garden.

I'm on Q2 havng reserved on July 18 2021, and it's June already: If you are going to reserve now, it's safe to say that you are not going to get the Deck in your hands until 2023, probably Q1 but possibly even later. By that time the Zen 3 Rembrandt mobile APUs will be a full year old (rel. Jan 2022) and I will be surprised if the Deck 2 (or whatever) sporting that architecture was not already announced. I'm not sure I'm going to actually order the Deck I have reserved...

You know the Celsius what is considered hot or bad for the deck if it goes over a 100 would that be bad? Whats the minimum it should be cause a few games get to 87 sometimes.

It shouldn't matter, apu will shut off the device if it hits the limit, only thing it will do is have a shorter lifespan, but to be honest anything causes that so stop worrying and just play~!

Its doing a cracking job running death stranding. I didn't really fancy it when it came out, but seeing it here, it looks like a game that belongs on handheld. I might pick it up when it hits sale. Keep up the good work Liam. Enjoying the vids.

And I just figured out, that one of my favorite game series from 2001-2003 got an controller support mod via Steam workshop, so its likely that i am able to play it now on the go... The gothic series 1-3 🙂✌🏻

I wish they would make a smaller version with more battery life. For me it makes sense only if I use it when I travel or when I go places I know I have to wait and be bored. As it is now, I would still probably prefer my Vita as even the Switch is too big for my taste.
Still, happy that people are enjoying it as much as they do. Hopefully it pushes competitors to do even better. Enjoy.

3:39 Thank you! Yes, this is one of the big things that I think not everyone has realized yet. That even if you aren't interested in getting a steam deck, you should still be excited for the changes that it will bring. I have a number of disabilities that can sometimes make playing games more difficult than they should be, and the changes in accessibility that steam championed with just the introduction of the *steam controller* have been incredible to see. I can't wait to see more accomodations made for games on deck over the next few years. Variable text size / fonts, and input modes being two big ones.

I finally got my Deck about three weeks ago, and it has been fantastic! After a bit of work, I have essentially unplugged my normal PC with its 650W power supply, and replaced it with a 45W Deck as main work computer. The ability to use the Deck as a low power Linux computer was my justification for buying one. Best of all, after a day's work, I disconnect it from the desk set up and play games on the couch. It has definitely increased my game playing as it has for everyone. Now, if there was only a way to buy stock in Valve ...

Also using an option to install in your directory and adjusting your PATH to find it is an obvious option. Most of my work is in the cloud (G-suite) or I can find an appropriate Flatpak. The only "exotic" thing I installed is the Anaconda distribution of the Jupyter "package". It seems to work, and I am confident it will survive subsequent upgrades. I also have wondered about using pacman to force the install to my directory (probably need to create an alternative "library" to store dependences etc...). I am new to Arch.
Finally, I have to say that my experience with USB-C hubs hasn't been perfect, and I don't know why. I have two different hubs, Kingston and Satechi. The problems start to appear when you start plugging in more devices into the hub. Some devices stop working like my Logitech wireless dongle. I am wondering if it is a power problem. The supplied 45W charger might not be enough. I am going to try to test this soon. I am having more success using Bluetooth whenever possible. Cool thing is that it seems to remember what your Bluetooth settings are between Desktop mode and Gaming mouse (i.e., on or off). Lastly, getting into Desktop mode is a small chore. The deck always starts in Game mode. Enjoy!

That's what I aim to as well. Sadly I need a lot of the stuff from arch repo and need to find a proper way to persist packages or at least enable an easy reinstall of them after an update. I also need to put money into hardware, because there are currently three places where I want to dock my deck easy. That means three times power supply, three times usb hub, three times a stand... It's an investment 😄

I'm still waiting and waiting and waiting :(
They need to ramp up production because I'm starting to lose interest. The competition may well release a competitor to the Steam Deck before I get one. Aya Neo and Ayn Loki are going to release handhelds with Zen3 and 6800u which is potentially more powerful than the Deck.
I'm tempted to get one on ebay even if I have to pay more because time is money. The Steam Deck will be obsolete in a couple years so I want one now to get my monies worth.

Technically I should have had about 1.5 months of play time with the Steam Deck, however I’ve literally had only 8.5 days worth, as I’ve unfortunately had two units go bad. I’m dismayed by the QC issues affecting units, however despite this, I absolutely loved the limited amount of time I managed to play with it so far, and look forward to my second replacement (third unit) hopefully arriving very soon. Hopefully Valve have a more robust process of dealing with QC going forward. In my experience support have been just OK, and DHL for returns have been awful.

I really wonder what happens with all the RMA units. Besides the noisy fan, sadly the click of my left analog stick doesn't work, it's only a minor defect not worth a new unit in comparison to your units, so I would replace it myself, but ifixit is out of stock and it would void my warranty. I guess they will tell me to send it back and maybe send me a new one (support hasn't answered yet).

There won't be cheaper third party units. Lol the only reason the Deck is at that price point is because valve can take a loss. They make it up with game sells from steam. Smaller third party vendors don't have that situation. All their profits come from hardware. It will all be more expensive. None other will be cheaper than valve oem hardware unless you're Nintendo, Microsoft or Sony.

I've had my Deck for nearly two months now, and it's honestly amazing. The biggest frustration so far has been storage space...I vastly underestimated the size of many triple-A titles these days, and have just about filled up my 256GB internal storage and 500GB SD card. Eventually, I'm going to swap in a 1TB SSD, and a 1TB SD card, but I'm sure that will only get filled up with time too ;)
On the other hand, being able to carry around a handheld with almost 50 games installed on it, with everything from old DOS games to indie darlings to emulated console games to AAA PC titles, is honestly a breathtaking experience. Not every game is going to translate over well to a gamepad...but, it's capable of comfortably playing more games than you'd expect. I can theoretically throw in any game produced over the last 40 years, and as long as it's not a text-parser game or a UI that's only optimized for mouse, it's a great time. Point and Click adventure games are surprisingly good!
The biggest joy so far has been to discover what games work well. I was really blown away by the fact that the new remake of Resident Evil 2 works flawlessly at 60FPS. Being able to game from bed is transcendent.

I'm hoping there will be a release , 2tb SSD because 1tb is still not enough, especially with constant updates which are 20gb plus . Valve line up should have been 256gb, 512gb, and 1tb
