Proton is solution for mass adoption , when there is enough market for Linux Lot of developers Will considered native ports

Devs can target proton during the development process, as well as use the technologies in proton to make native games. The end goal would be native but the logical first step is proton.

I think it might actually be a good thing. Linux has the nasty habit of changing a LOT breaking compatibility for software that isn't open source and has people modifying it. Try running the linux ports from the early 2000's done by Loki Games. Great back then, these days you'll barely be able to get them to run properly. You can even see it with Feral's port of Tomb Raider. I tried that recently and already had craploads of graphics glitches that weren't there back when the game came out. With native software developers will probably keep having to update their software to deal with changes on the OS level, with proton they will only have to modify proton to work with new versions of "system software" all games running with proton will just work.

Thinking the same. At the same time I understand that devs need to do what's more convenient for them. Is there an "inverse Proton" to make devs make the Linux build first and then add a Windows compatibility layer?

@@PixelRemedy Whoopsie looks like my answer was deleted because I included the link with it. Check out "Easy Anti-Cheat gets much simpler for Proton and Steam Deck" on gaming on Linux if you want to know the details, or the "Steamworks Development" page news from 22 January. But in short: after end of January it got way easier to enable anti cheat on Linux. Essentially only on setting must be changed, a file created and after that the game updated to Steam, that's it.

Not sure if it’s that simple if the game relies on proton (if it’s a windows game). Not to be that guy but just throwing it out there. If I’m wrong, go ahead and correct me on this as I’m not a dev.
