At least the test i did on my machine, this new UI is very buggy right now on Linux. It seems that will take some work from Valve before the stable release.

Anyone know the best way to add gamepass games to the new UI with controller support on the steam Deck?

They would only really be able to directly include Gamescope when most on Linux move to Wayland.

Unfortunately it's still pretty broken for me on Windows on the Steam Deck, just as it was when I tried it a few months ago. The main window isn't full screen or centred, and both the Steam and three dot menus scroll off the screen when you try to open them.

I tried it on Linux and Windows and it works greats for Steam games that don't open in a windowed format but... I try running non steam games in a windowed form and it broke the hell out of Steam on both Linux and Windows so it still has a lot of work to do. There's also no way to exit new desktop mode without exiting steam lol. Plus it seems to be Xwayland unfortunately on Linux lmao. There are also some bugs that occur with NORMAL steam if you use gamepadui. I changed the scaling during gamepadui to show more content and smaller text and after i left gamepadui and went back to steam, the scaling of normal steam bugs out when trying to uninstall games or mess with storage locations on Steam Runtime (linux) which breaks the program as the scaling makes certain things stop working like the INSTALL GAME button and it stays like that until I reboot steam. Really annoying lol

Yeah it's very much a work in progress, a few Deckisms need to be changed for desktop use.

Edit your shortcuts or your startup option to have it included.

I tried it on my Fedora System and as expected for a beta, it has some issues, the must obvious is performance which is not great especially when navigating the home screen section. I also inexplicably lost inputs from time to time. But despite that, it looks great and I can't wait for it to be the default. I also hope they'll be able to wire some of the Steam Deck tweaks on our Linux desktops as well ;)

Yeah it's pretty janky, at least in a normal wayland session. If I go into the settings menu from the home menu, I'm not able to navigate the left pane with the controller (but the same menu works when using the in-game overlay). The effects that show you what item is currently selected in the game list etc randomly breaks (there's a solid white box, a colored faded shadow, and the text appearance/hiding stuff, all of which seem to break independently of one another). Very close to working reliably (and I'll keep using it), and it's nice that I don't need to force download a specific update to get the new UI anymore, but it's more broken than before. Gamescope also seems to stop launching randomly so I can't consistently avoid the issues by launching steam inside gamescope like I used to.

Along with performance issues (might be an Nvidia specific issue?), I'm getting inconsistent highlighting of the selected game, making the interface unusable currently for me :(

The performance issue is because steam ui is a browser (cef) and valve doesn't know how to properly enable hardware acceleration on linux so it all runs on the cpu, badly. This has been an issue with steam ui for many years now every since they released the new ui and they have never fixed it. The old UI ran at 144 fps on my computer. I get around 0.5 fps in the new ui with my gtx 1080 gpu (at 4k resolution). This is even an issue on steam deck but less so because of the low resolution. I dont think valve is ever going to fix it.

The only reason why I use the big picture mode at all is to quickly be able to configure my Steam Controller... unfortunately the new UI is a huge step backwards in being able to quickly map and edit controller configurations. 🤷‍♂

I hope they don’t push it to stable very soon. I like the deck UI, however the steam deck’s steam input configurator is worse than the old one. It’s missing features and the UI is harder to navigate.

They've been adding all of the features back slowly. It'll get there eventually, hopefully with better ux this time.

Tried this out on my Windows To Go boot drive and there's still a lot of work to be done on it. The UI covered up half the games I tried and Steam Input which I had working through BPM was now completely broken on non-Steam games

Can’t wait when steam os is officially out for desktop PCs. I hope they working Nvidia as well. Been testing haloISO, and game mode is buggy as heck at least for GTX 1xxx + or newer. My haloISO updates and f**k up mu desktop mode and won’t let me switch now. Desktop mode did work great. My GTX 1080ti keeps crashing in game mode under steam os. In desktop it ran fine. I tested the beta steam os ui on my windows 2700x/16GB/GTX 1080ti/SSD and same issue that happens with haloISO (steam os) happens with this beta steam. The steam button (like start menu) will not show up.. background fade but menu won't pop up.. I get same issue when running steam os. There is Compatibility issue with GTX+ owner that will not show the steam menu pop up. I wonder if other GTX/RTX users will also get same bug, with steam menu not working, wont pop up.. @gaming on Linux? You should ask Nvidia users to test this on their system, If the same issue happens, hopefully ppl will report and they fix it for nvidia users.

As cool as this is, I enjoyed having it exclusive to the Steam Deck. Don’t get me wrong, I really like having everyone having access to it and me also being able to use it on my desktop. But it just felt so cool having something like the steam deck’s UI being exclusive because now, even though the steam deck is still one of my favorite pieces of tech, it feels less unique now due to gaming mode being a large part of the steam deck for me. But I’m not saying the steam deck isn’t amazing, because with gaming mode or without, I would still like the steam deck the same. It’s one of the best consoles and/or PC ever made (tied with my desktop, and don’t get mad lol, a lot of Nintendo/PS systems)

Question about using this with Windows (dual boot on the deck): Does it do anything to provide an "upgraded" experience to Controller emulation? I.e. will we still need programs like SWICD or similar or can we just use Steam in this new mode?
