I want the Ally to succeed, for a number of reasons. The more successful other x64 handhelds are, the more game devs will seriously consider making their games playable on such devices: better performance optimisation, more customisation to allow low-spec play, controller-friendly UI, etc. And Steam will almost certainly be deployed on most or all such devices, which means even more reason for Valve to continue to develop the Steam UI. More handhelds will probably mean the associated chips will get cheaper over time. The only real "risk" as I see it is if Windows-based handhelds become so successful that the Linux yet again has to recede into the background. We are so close to establishing Linux as a real, general-purpose gaming OS for everybody; I don't want that to stop.

I love playing slightly lower-stakes games on my Deck; typically, before I go to bed, I will play a bit of Kingdom: Two Crowns or Vampire Survivors because the control schemes are super simple and they are very low power games so my battery will last a bit longer.

don't really care about a new console war. the steam deck is cheap enough, supports a great company and is bringing everyone a different gaming OS so we can finally slowly get rid of Microsoft. if the Ally is as good as they say I might get one eventually but ONLY IF it supports Linux and Steam OS

The Ally came at the right time. Deck updates have been slowing down and I think this is the elbow jab they need to stay competitive. I can only hope that going forward, they continue to aim for a STREAMLINED and tailored experience rather than adding feature after feature until SteamOS is just as bloated as Windows.

The SteamDeck community is compounded of SteamDeck and Linux Fanboys. Of course there will be a community for it. ASUS has a lot of Gaming laptops out there and you don’t see them dropping ANY of them do you? The Ally is the New addition to the ROG brand which has existed for many many years now. Is not going anywhere.

I'm far from ready to ditch my Steam Deck for an Asus ROG. the track pads are missing, the cheap looking joy pads don't look durable or appealing. if I replace my Steam Deck it will likely be with the next handheld from Valve. I've been playing Vampire Survivors, Persona 5 and a personal favourite that being Borderlands 2. Borderlands 2 is about 11 years old, still plays well and looks a bit better than on my PS3.

I don't mind competition in the handheld space, but I'm really not happy that competition is Windows-based. The Steam Deck, to me, is Linux' trojan horse to the gaming community. It's been bringing a ton of new users onto Linux and away from Windows. I want to get an Ally (primarily for OpenRGB development) but I will not be running Windows on it longer than necessary for said development. Valve needs to start working with some of these other handheld vendors to ship SteamOS on them so that Windows doesn't start overtaking Linux in the handheld market.

Why does the steam deck suck? For its size and price, it underperforms. Also, they could have easily added an interchangeable battery, but they didn't so that they could sell you a "Steam Deck 2.0" that fixes all of the original problems that they intentionally didn't address so that they could take more of your money. It's a good business model, but it kinda scummy, IMHO

I'll stay with my Steam Deck despite the competition, because I believe in Valve's commitment to create a new platform. All copycats just want a slice of the handled market but they are not creating anything new. Valve is leveraging Linux to create a real handled platform with a compatibility layer that garanties the compatibility of our games with future updates. I would not bet on Asus support on the long term.

Im not an expert or anything, but the fact that the Ally runs Windows natively is a plus for me, since I think it should be able to run games that use anti cheat. It might make some games easier for me to mod, since i mainly use windows software like Vortex to mod my games. I really do not want to go through the trouble of installing Windows on my deck and risk a performance drop. That's just my take from my limited knowledge. Feel free to correct me

the integration and software tailor-made for the deck is what sells me on the deck. i've always wanted something that just works and the steam deck does an amazing job at that. when i saw one of those aya neos years ago, i thought it was cool but realized it must be terrible to navigate. valve made it extremely easy and noob friendly (as well as tinkerer friendly) to get whatever you want on deck. as a console modder, i've always wanted seamless integration with the tweaks and mods i have, the deck satisfies that need, and more. and i dont even want to think about the battery life on more powerful handheld pcs. the cost of these "competitors" is too high, and the people behind them probably don't know why the deck was such a hit.

Am I concerned about the ROG Ally already killing the Steam Deck? Nah. Will it be a boost for a far better Deck 2 in a couple of years? Guess so. Valve makes most of its money through Steam. It doesn't matter what people play on. I have my Deck, my son has his Deck and we are both more than just happy. I loved Handheld Gaming in the past as a young boy and so excited that this comes back to all of us.

Valve made it relatively simple for me to open up my Steam Deck and replace the thumb controllers if they ever wear out. YouTube's TronixFix has even said it's one of the easiest handhelds he's ever worked with. From day one, this handheld was made for the gamers. Good luck Asus competing with it.

Don't forget the software when comparing the Steam Deck and Ally. The customization you can do on the Steam Deck is amazing. E.g. controller layouts, action sets, multiple buttonpresses, community layouts.... Also many people customize their Steam Deck with plugins. You can repair your Steam Deck because there are spare parts available. That's a lot you get.

I might be moving heaven and earth to get a steam deck living less than an hour drive from the EU border... And of course the price of the ROG Ally makes me conflicted. If the performance is really so much better, would I pick the Ally instead? Or is the Steam Controller and subsequently the Steam Deck trackpads too important to me? I have to wait for reviews but here is a notable thing. The Deck sometimes require 540p resolution, and that is a whooping 49% less than 800p or 43% less than 720p. And afaik either the Z1 or the Z1 extreme is only(?) 50% more performant than the steamdeck at the same tdp, but a higher resoltuion screen requires more power to the backlight, and the whole machine is smaller.... So do I have to run games at 540p on the Ally to get (just pulling a number out my rear now!) 20% more battery life than the steam deck? what does 540p look like on a 1440p screen? Always, just saying im skeptical, waiting for reviews But the lack of a trackpad, and no gyro? I am skeptical about the Allys performance, battery life, and what games I would be able to play without the built in steam controller. Not even flick-stick without gyro

About the ROG Ally and others, I really wonder why they're going the Windows route, and how they're able to interface with the latest iterations of this monstrosity. I've been on both Windows and Linux for about my whole life, and I can't imagine a handheld with all the new horrible Windows things, like forced updates where you can't opt out, which is ok for security updates, but they require restarts and on restart, prompt you again for sharing personal data on multiple screens. This is awful to users, and if present on handheld, even worse. Is there a separate Windows 11 experience for smaller devices?

I'm glad the Asus is a competitive price, more competition is good for users! Would be interesting to know how many units of the steam deck are that higher price model though. Specs on paper is one thing, but in order to have a successful system/console... it needs much more than just specs, it needs love, the amount Valve work on improving the Steam Deck and how much they listen and look at the community is what sold me, I literally just bought my Deck even after looking at everything the Ally had to offer, I just genuinely don't think they are going to be able to compete with just how amazing Valve is, we aren't gonna have a more supportive company for hardware and software than Valve anytime soon, and the updates they role out for the steam deck also benefit the PC users too since I know there are a big chunk who do love seeing the UI and Big Screen Mode updated, I mean just LOOK at the Index, a VR headset that launched in a very steep market where people say "VR isn't gonna make it" these guys are literally the good guys like in Ready Player One and in a world we live in, I doubt we're gonna get anyone else who's willing to put as much on the line as they have, I know there are smaller companies that do care, but most of those have ended up growing from humble to dumble. Although, me or anyone else saying that shouldn't let that get to their head, the moment anyone they start getting an ego is usually when the downfall happens... It's a lot for me to hope for, but I hope Valve doesn't ever go that route, even though I know it's a mega corporation and we never know who will take control... just like what happened to YouTube after all these years. Anyways I know I wrote a paragraph...sorry, hahah, but I just think it is important for a company to care about their work as much as the money, it's the key to success, even if you go down in the dumps from time to time ya know?

BTW Ally is smaller but the battery size is the same size as the deck. I currently have windows 11 installed on my steam deck and enjoying it. Most games run at a decent fps for me so I'll stick with it unless the Ally reviews are really great and the battery has to be the same as the SD or better. If it can meet those 2 requirements then I'll get it. I will say I will miss the touchpads bc navigating in windows with it right now is awesome.

Thank you for addressing that it's not just specs. Plus the worst feature of ROG is that you have to run it on Windows which is a huge down side. I agree with you 100% and the future for the Deck continues to look exciting.

@@AlteredCarbons It probably wont take long until ChimeraOS will support it like it does with AyaNeo and GPD Win Devices actually. But I think the Ally will be a flop. It lacks the touchpads and the Gyro. And it will be to power hungry (somewhat cutdown laptop APU and the higher Resolution and high Refreshrate screen) for the small battery to be usable as portable device. What its good for to have better specs if the battery will only last 30 Minutes when you play God Of War?

The two differences between Ally and other MFGs, is Price, and ASUS brand. Ally is a Computer. Updates are comparable to any PC laptop. You shouldn't need continued MFG support. Drivers will update from respective MFGs, and Microsoft. Ally is a better device all around. But isn't that to be expected? Steam Deck is 2 years old.

People saying the Steam Deck is in trouble are taking the piss. Competition isn't a bad thing it's a GOOD thing. If there are more Steam Deck-esque products, Valve will keep improving the Steam Deck -- and maybe even release a new Steam Deck 2. It's a win.

depends. what do you want. the rog will be more powerful but it will most likely come with much less overall support. steam has a great warranty , the community will be unmatched it also has Ifix it support if you break anything you can replace it yourself. and game company's see this and are making games more compatible for the lower end systems because of the steam deck. SD2 will be years in the making and even then the steam deck will most likely hold its value very well for years to come.

I love and hate the Deck at the same time. The gaming on it is great, but the WiFi is a catastrophe. Ultra fast when it works at all but looses connection every few minutes for no reasons. They haven't fixed this in a year now -.-. Also the Deck is very very loud.

I love my steam deck big time I’ve installed decky and cryoutilities and installed emu deck so I’m really taking advantage of all that the deck can do. That being said unfortunately allot of the newest pc titles are showing that the decks apu doesn’t quite have the horsepower to run the newer aaa titles very well the apu is really being stressed by the newer aaa titles. Also I’m upset I can’t take advantage of my game pass ultimate subscription to play the games natively on the deck. I installed the Xbox game pass cloud app on the deck to stream my game pass games but it’s not the same as playing them locally on the deck. So for that reason if the rog ally is really 699 I will definitely be selling my deck and jumping ship to the ally as much as I love my deck the ally will be better value if it truly is 699.

Steam Deck will remain king for a while. Windows makes everything run like 💩 in my opinion, and Steam OS has come a VERY LONG way. I can't imagine playing a hand held on Windows 11. I tried Windows 11 on the Deck, and I have NO desire to go back to that.

you will be waiting years for steam deck 2, just saying. if your going to wait that long just get the rog. it will be better then deck in power but that is about it. the steam deck will have much better support by the community and steam them selves plus we have ifix it to fix anything wrong with it. im sure a laptop with a 3050 gpu will be stronger then a rog and a rog is stronger then a deck. but the deck just feels right for me

tbh the only time i use my SD touchpads is when i have to force myself to use them just because it's there. any game that plays better with the touchpad i find too cumbersome for me to enjoy on a handheld anyways. for me, i would easily get rid of my SD as long as the ally is actually in the$600-700 range. i mostly just aim for 720p40 for 3d AAA games, but i wouldnt mind the ally 120hz screen with 2d titles. i personally dont care about gaming at 1080p on a handheld so i would just drop the resolution to 720p anyways. my SD is a companion device to help tackle my backlog and the missing touchpads on my the ally doesnt bother me as i hardly ever use them or play with them on my SD to begin with. however the 4 back buttons will be missed.

I don’t think the Allay will topple the steam deck I E played a lot of hand heads and it really is a fine line on what works and what doesn’t also with steam deck we are virtually guaranteed long term support which I fear the Allay might not get if it has a slow start and let also not forget the SD is established the Asus is trying to break into a market currently with a very big player at the top it’ll be competition sure but it shouldn’t kill the steam deck.

While competition is needed for such hardware to make progress. I don't see ROG directly compete to the Steam deck. They aren't really improving on things that SD is missing. It lacks even more with some features, while having easier to fix improvements. It's nothing that a revision of SD could fix.

I've heard ROG Ally is some kind of strategic joint venture with Microsoft to sell their Gamepass. Instead of developing another own Handheld like Sony does.

Looks like the Ally is targetting the $650 Steam Deck. They must figure that the demand for that model shows that there's a large market on the high end, so they surround it with a slightly cheaper model for the frugal and a slightly more expensive model for the spendthrifts, both with better performance and a larger game library at the expense of having a less smooth and optimised experience and a shorter battery life. Which means the ROG Ally isn't a Deck-killer. It's just yet another competitor, albeit one that is kuch larger than all the others and that will likely take a big bite out of the Deck's sales.

My biggest and probably only complain about the Steam Deck, that there is no option to add eGPU. But Steam OS is so much better for a handheld gaming. Day and night comparing it to GPD Win 2 I had.

I think in one of the recent updates of Steam Client Valve announced addition of the hardware acceleration to the UI on Linux and Mac. Is it applicable to Deck? Especially in game mode. I know it's Linux, but not sure if Deck uses the same Steam client.
