Personally, for me the games that don’t work are few and far between, but I guess this depends on your library. I play a lot of indie games and many of those devs seem to love the steam deck

That's actually factually not true, as reviews elsewhere have shown - a number of games do have issues. Plus, with Proton, a lot of older games can end up working better on Linux, because Proton has game-specific fixes and general compatibility is the entire point of Proton.

Yeah but I don't feel like dealing with random reboots, an update that may break or fix something everyday, for my personal favorite horrible battery life. Now if I could get the same steam OS experience on the Ally, then if you speak in my language

So I hate being a downer but yea everything is playable or verified but playing a PC fps game on PC servers is so awful. No aim Assist lol it sucks

Using a Steam Deck for online multiplayer games, especially a first-person shooter in handheld mode is a fools errand to begin with. So, there's your first problem. Next, you're not playing in docked mode on a separate larger screen while using a wired ethernet connection; problem #2. And you're not using a mouse and keyboard. And with that we've pinpointed problem 3. Fix these issues and you'll be fine.

Competitive FPS isn't exactly what this device is good for.

I just finished Demons Souls on my deck, and the fact that I was able to play through an entire ps3 game on a handheld still blows me away

@@Ayu91625 Yeah locked at 30. performance issues in a couple locations. Especially the bridge that the dragon breathes fire along. For the most part performance was perfectly fine though. There were a couple emulator settings I changed. Under the emulators gpu settings, Write Color Buffers needs to be on. Under audio, I had also changed the audio out setting to faudio and enabled time stretching

That game was such a letdown for me.. all the DBZ games are poop to me to be honest.. they don't have the toonami music either 😐 the fighting system was cool as hell though and definitely got the job done. Uninstalled

You're not dealing with the average handheld any more...

Doing some napkin maths here: in 18 months (Jan 22 - Jun 23, as I remember Valve was already ranking their games around a month before launch), we got 10020 Verified+Playable games, and a total of 13133 ranked games if you count the Unsupported ones (for completion purposes). That gives us an average of 556.6 games ranked per month, or 18.5 per day (729.6 with Unsupported, or 24.3 per day). Using that as a base, we can predict reaching 20000 games in another 18 months or so (9 and a half with Unsupported) if Valve keeps the pace. Steam has around 86,239 games as of right now, June 28 2023 (if you filter by games only on the search page). So that means around 11% of all games on Steam are Verified or Playable, and around 15% of them have any ranking that's not Unknown. This in the course of 18 months. Sure, new games come in every single day, and Valve's probably not keeping up enough from a quick glance I had on the Upcoming section in SteamDB (quantities vary but the next few days seem to have around 20-30 new games, one or other have 5 or less), but if we ignore that for now and no new games were ever released from this point forward, Valve would need at least another 100 months (8.3 years) to be able to rank their entire catalog as it is today. TL;DR I think Valve should hire more testers, they're really gonna need it.

@ Yeah, pretty sure there's a fair amount of shovelware, asset flips and low-effort games that could be ignored. Though Valve itself said back then their plan was to "review the entire Steam catalog", so I guess their words came back to bite them now. Plus they might be giving preference to new titles that are always coming in every day or so, rather than that obscure decade-old hidden gem. Would be nice to know how Valve is sorting that out. It is a herculean task after all.

Stable channel is kinda buggy right now, screenshot doesn't notify me anymore, open overlay now sometimes can cause crash reboot quite often. That didn't happen to me quite a long time but it's happening again.

@@Spencerwalker21 well it's more buggy as expected, I wake it up from like 2 mins sleep and wifi can't detect any available network, steam button stops working. Switched back to stable and notification is fixed btw.

I hope ArcSys enables EAC for Linux, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Nice to see steam take a step to give linux gaming a legitimate reason for the market to support and give the love linux deserves! I really hope that epic games will follow suit so people can play fortnite on the steam deck natively on linux (And as a added perk all of linux will be able to play!) Or at the very least epic games should release a native linux launcher, heroric is good and all but normies want to use stock, not some random open sourced project

I'd just love to see Steam/Valve add easier ways to install all the launchers from Steam itself and handle those randomly generated compatdata directories a lot better. Not sure if that's possible or breaking some sort of TOS.

I have serious doubts that anything released over the next six to 12 months at least will be anything close to a serious Steam Deck competitor. What a lot of Gamers™ fail to understand is that in order for a handheld gaming device to succeed on a large-ish scale it takes a lot more than mere GPU horsepower. In fact, that seems to be a detriment to widespread adoption. Look at the original GameBoy (which was already using obsolete hardware in 1989) which massively outsold literally every other (much more powerful) handheld device combined at the time. This was repeated again during the entire run of each NDS version versus every other more powerful portable option available during those years. I'm not saying the Deck will do Nintendo numbers, but in this niche market of handheld gaming PCs, the Deck is the only option doing it right by offering unrivaled hardware and software support, a tailor-made UI, easily available replacement parts, and not just using the flavor of the month GPU/CPU upgrades as its primary selling point. In my opinion, we can add the Ally to the corpse pile of flash-in-the pan handhelds that've flooded the market over the past two years. Asus simply hasn't done enough to set that machine apart from the likes of Ayaneo, GPD, etc.

Yes! The big number I've been waiting for. The next big number I'm waiting for is compatibility for the Top 1000 (the most reliable index) with a Platinum or Gold rating (meaning it runs fine out of the box) to hit 80%. Currently we're sitting at 74% and making steady progress. At this rate, we'll be approaching the same kind of compatibility numbers Microsoft have had moving between architectures -- such as the move from 9x to NT, and so on -- within the next year or so.

IT'S OVER 9-wait I think I made this joke on the previous milestone video.
