Devices like GPD Win 4 and Win Max 2 got Linux support nearly instantly so I expect this to get Linux pretty soon. I’m fine with you continuing to cover Steam Deck and developments on that platform.

You hit all the right points. I'm happy ASUS managed to fit such powerful specs into such a great price range, and are providing some serious competition that (unlike Nintendo) is competitive in the PC gaming space. I use an ASUS ROG motherboard in my main gaming PC, so I'm not surprised they can deliver on the sheer hardware side of things. But it lacks many of the features, community support structures, and foundational open software principles that end up making the Steam Deck so much more than just a gaming laptop with controller handles.

Hopefully, Valve will improve availability of the Steam Deck in the UK to help in it's fight against the competition. The 64GB model has been pretty much continuously out of stock since the Spring Sale, and the 256GB model has been unavailable since early last week too. It'll be interesting to see if stocks deplete in other regions too.

The things which most interest me about the ROG Ally are related to compatibility. I've enjoyed owning a Steam Deck, but it has required a lot of tinkering. I've never been satisfied with the performance of outside launchers like Epic and GoG via Heroic, and it took forever to get a small fan game to run acceptably. If the ROG Ally also doesn't require constant cache updates, that would be a win for usability. That said, competition in this area is good and it was inevitable that new products would start leapfrogging each other. I have more confidence that Valve will support their products well into the future, and that they can justify the low system price-tag by expanding the audience for Steam.

With how involved Xbox is with the Ally (that Asus announcement showcase felt like a giant Xbox ad), I'm guessing Asus won't be helping to get Linux on the Ally. It'll be up the community to do it.

Lack of touchpads and truly functional sleep mode is killing Ally for me, even before we get to the community and software side. Steam Deck won't be able to run every new game (especially if they keep coming out in such horrible technical states), but I think it'll run enough. I'd rather wait for Steam Deck 2 as my generational upgrade.

The 64GB Steam Deck's entry price is too low to be affected by the ROG Ally, but it would not surprise me at all if the 256GB and 512GB Steam Deck models take a huge hit on the sales chart. The only reason that wouldn't happen is if the Ally launch is a complete disaster. If the ROG Ally turns out to be a success and starts to eat at the Steam Deck sales, I do agree that Valve might need to realign/streamline their model lineup if they're not planning to release more powerful updated versions anytime soon. They should drop the 64GB model, but bring the 256GB model down to take its place at the 399 entry, and drop the 512 GB model down to 499.

Honestly, after a while, I don't WANT to own so many handheld devices. If I wanted to play with up to 120Hz at 1080p or higher, I might as well just use my gaming laptop. Steam Deck is for playing my Steam library with a super easy UI in low settings. I LOVE the ease of use of the stock UI, its customizability, and the dedication of its community. Windows on a handheld just straight up SUCKS. And I honestly like daily driving Windows for work stuff. But geezus, I hate to use even tablets with Windows rn. It's just not a good experience on anything other than a mouse and keyboard. For Me Personally: a Switch+Deck+PC covers literally everything I could want to play for my use case.

I might be a minority among the SteamDeck users but I wouldn't have bought it if it wasn't open. People seem to forget how much of the SteamDeck's success is based on the hard work and passion of open development. I'm sure there are many who have supported community handhelds since before the (Open)Pandora that won't touch Windows. Also It's hard to imagine any company matching Valve's support behind the scenes. Linux is the future of gaming because of the community.

The Steam Deck we know today also likely wouldn't exist at all if it wasn't for previous hardware products like the Steam Link, Steam Controller, and of course the Steam Machines. Although none of these seemingly were considered a grand success on their own, the employees at Valve have definitely learned something with every release, and improved upon previous issues to get the Steam Deck to where it was on release day. Something that, as I'im told, wasn't exactly perfect either.

competition for valve's steam deck in pc gaming space is actually really good for valve. I believe steam decks are sold at a loss for valve. if the rog ally manages to take up some of the steam decks market share then valve will sell less steam deck and lose less money, all the while these people will have steam on their windows pc enabled rog ally and play games and buy games through the steam marketplace. realistically valve comes out on top and we don't need to vehemently oppose all new competition, doing so would ultimately lead to technological stagnation.

I think competition is good, and if this device is good, it will only prompt Valve to get better as well. At least until version 3... However, Asus is having a bit of a problem with some of their motherboards causing AMD chips to effectively explode. And until very recently, they haven't taken responsibility for that. So while if I didn't already have a Steam Deck, I'd likely consider the Asus ROG Ally, it's off the table for me for the foreseeable future.

The best way I can summarize it is that the steam deck is a handheld console and quite an open one at that. That brings a community, imagine all the talent of homebrew but without it being a hack. The device is made by people who care and have a goal in mind rather than just making money, pushing Linux gaming forward, better more inventive controllers, right to repair, a more modular software and more caring software updates. Yeah the ally has more power of course it is, it came out a year later, it can play more games, of course it can, it runs windows and that right there it is the worst thing about it. It's a handheld PC. That sucks, always have, always will.

Not a problem at all, I think it's good that you are clear on this point, and open about your "bias", if you can call it that. 🙂 I basically stopped gaming all together 12 years ago when I started daily driving linux. I only got back into it about a year ago thanks to all the work Valve has done with proton on PC. Thruth is, I never would have gotten a steam deck if it didn't run Linux. And let me tell you as a Linux gamer I'm used to being disappointed and my expectations were super low, but boy did Valve deliver if you ask me. 🙂 It's like a dream come true. I've thought a lot about why I run Linux, because I'm not a free software purist, I don't consider proprietary software immoral. And it's not because it's always better, because it's a hassle sometimes. The only answer that's left at the end of the day is a very personal one, it makes computing fun for me. 🙂

You nailed my overall feelings. I'm not a FOSS purist and frankly, the zealot attitude of some in the Linux community really bothers me. I have said it before in other comments, I simply don't trust ASUS. I have been on both sides of this, previous 2022 ROG G14 owner and current Steam Deck owner and I can say my experience has been much more pleasant with the Steam Deck and I basically use it as a replacement for my laptop. My G14 lasted less than a year and I finally got a refund for it last month. Its main issue was an issue where it would reboot while sleeping and I would loose everything I had open, it took several months of back and forth and multiple RMA's to finally get a refund because they could not fix it. On top of that, the ROG crate is badly coded and often, simple changes would result in my power options being reset and other settings getting lost and not to mention half the crate would often not function without a reboot. Put on top of that, lack of video driver updates and several bad BIOS updates where performance and battery power consumption was severely effected (just check the G14 owners Reddit group) just ended up as bad overall experience. I just felt that after half a year, ASUS already lost interest in the device and they were off to the next device they can sell. They will do the same with the Ally, this time next year all the Ally owners will be pushed to buy another new Ally, which is just sick. In the end, owning a Steam Deck is like being part of a community and a community that cares, and Valve does too. I know the Steam Deck is also not perfect but I believe that Valve is striving to make it as good as it can be and not just planning the next new device they want to ship like ASUS. That's just my tuppenceworth. Keep up the excellent work!! I love your videos and news updates.

Very much onboard with all of your points there, I absolutely love my Steam Deck and wouldn’t trade it with anything else out there regardless of price. The issue with these Windows devices is that they miss out on what makes the Steam Deck special: the support from Valve and the community at large. As mushy as it sounds, it’s a product that’s created with love and is loved by millions and that’s reflected in the way you’re looked after as an end user every time you switch it on. It’s channels like yours that keep this spirit alive and I can’t thank you enough for representing the average gamer, as opposed to these other clickbait YouTubers fawning over there review units of products that are inaccessible to many of us. The Steam Deck is going places and it good to have you along for the ride.

I do not have a lot of budget, so I should try to combine work needs with pleasure. The Steam Deck has 100% replaced my laptop, and in total it probably is cheaper than my second hand laptop. The deck is ideally to do some programming on long train journeys. As such it has earned itself back a lot of times. And as for budgeting: this is a business expense because I use it primarily for work (which is .... Linux) The ASUS ROG is unusable for work. To me it would be like buying a 1500 Euro iphone: a big waste of money for a doorstop.

This is my take on the ROG Ally + Amazing performance IF you are okay with 1-2 hours of battery life. + Higher resolution display allow more flexibility. (Increased graphical fidelity, better scaling in emulators). - Terrible performance (compared to the Steam Deck) if you want to conserve battery life beyond 3 hours - It cannot go much below 7-9W due to the 8-core CPU. So you are stuck with 4 hours at most, with REALLY bad GPU performance. Steam Deck can have 4-8.5 hours with better performance (Which is apparent in on old PC/AAA-games, indies, 2D games and emulation) - Lack of touchpads, You can't play a lot of PC games intuitively without touchpads or navigate around all the "jank" of PC gaming (launchers, mouse-only menus etc) - Unknown repairability. This will likely be bad with Asus pulling both support and repairs beyond the warranty period. - Windows (It's a terrible OS, what can I say?)

I'm surprised that any Linux focused creators are doing anything with the Allly aside from acknowledging its existence. Thanks for not becoming something other than a channel about Linux gaming.

I do appreciate the community post made about the feelings towards ASUS's approach to being held accountable for their mistakes. Even though this handheld is from a large player in the computer niche, I don't see it as much different in user-repairability than any of the GPD or Ayn or AYA devices. Valve teaming up with iFixIt cemented my belief in long-term support. I need trust that my device lasts and is user-centered, rather than solely profit-centered, to want to purchase. You can have the best specs and still have the worst UX, especially when things go wrong.

I'm all in on Steam Deck at this point. I'm just waiting for compatibility to reach 90% of my steam library, and I'll be putting SteamOS on my desktop and laptop, as soon as it's publicly available. I fully expect SteamOS to be the first distro with legitimate, long term support, that's going to get major software developers making their apps and tools on linux, natively. When this happens, I really hope Microsoft will change it's tune on consumer focused design, rather than data collection.

I ended up with an Aye Neo Pro before I was able to get a Steam Deck. It probably wasn't really worth the cost, but I played it quite a bit before I got the Deck. However, I played it with ChimeraOS because I prefer to use Linux over Windows. If I were to end up with an ROG Ally, I would most certainly be running a Linux distribution on it, most likely ChimeraOS or HoloISO. Right now, I'm pretty satisfied with my Steam Deck, though, and I don't see myself giving up the trackpads and gyro for another handheld that doesn't have trackpads, and so far doesn't have gyro controls for gaming (there's speculation that there may be a gyro feature that will be enabled for games later).

I will keep my steam deck too. Moving to Ally now doesn't make sense. Ally is welcome because it could create competition and could press Valve to do more. I will move to a new steam deck model when it makes sense

If Valve could get the base model Deck down to $299 it would be a magic price point that would explode sales - especially if they could get it into retail stores. I think they should reduce prices to, say, $299, $449 & $599 for the base, mid and premium models respectively. The Deck's parts are a couple of years older than when they were sourced so their costs should be down by now. And/or perhaps they could even make the 256GB the base, the 512GB the mid and a 1TB model the premium.

I don't think the Ally is worth £699. At that price point I'd rather spend it on a home-console-sized PC which would deliver up to 1440p ultra/high performance. For me, the steam deck is for extended play not a gaming PC replacement therefore £699 on a handheld just doesn't make any sense for me.

I have the money but the fact they dont ship a linux version makes me not want to support that product when theres already the Steam Deck that does everything right already

The ally might be competitive in its even more premium class, but 800 euros is still more than two steam decks. Plus instead of Valve working hard using Linux, the best OS, and giving it pre-installed to so many people who would have never installed it otherwise, you got Asus and Microsoft to rely on... Steam deck all the way. It's half the price, more than powerful enough, and the software side of it is so cool.

i love the steam deck, i got 400 version (419 euros here in the netherlands) allthough i hope they come out with a more powerfull version, also great at low TDP in maybe 3 or 4 years. with a better screen (smaller bezzels, oled) maybe better battery but i mostly play whilst connected anyway. then i would want the ergonomics to be the exact same, it feels amazing in the hands. maybe a bit thicker for a bigger battery, or better cooling. and i would immediately buy the cheapest version for 499/599 or something.

Yeah, I'd have taken one just because I'm passionate about open platform gaming, but the lack of touchpads is a dealbreaker for me, too. I can't justify buying something I'd hardly ever use at the end of the day

Before jumping into bed with ASUS with the Ally, you might also want to know about all the anti-consumer shady stuff they're doing. Some important viewing: "I'm sorry ASUS... but you're fired!" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wZ-QVOKGVyM "Scumbag ASUS: Overvolting CPUs & Screwing the Customer" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cbGfc-JBxlY Again...sticking with Steam Deck. You trust them to fix a broken Ally? Nah.

This. ASUS doesn't have a great track record, and they definitely don't have a history of being a disruptor, challenging the status quo, or innovating.
