Excellent video as always Liam! Really hoping that Valve improve their communications regarding Steam Deck availability. The simple way to resolve AI art issues: just make it Free and Open Source. AI art should belong to nobody. No person or entity should have claims of ownership on AI art. Ultimately this means no copyright claims on AI art, is it would belong to the public.

@@emanuelalmroth6683 Lets take a step back. Could you please explain to be what i misunderstood about Nick's argument? Nick is arguing from a perspective of being for Copyright to premise his argument for how AI art should be handled, and my argument focused on Copyright for that reason. So please explain to me exactly what i misunderstood about Nicks argument. If i really misunderstood something Nick said and misrepresented his argument, i will apologize and correct it. @@nickxcom With all due respect, This argument i don't particularly find convincing when looking past the surface level. Art is inspired from other art, but if you create a new piece even if its inspired from other art, it can't really be classified as Copyright in the traditional sense, lest no new art could ever be created because anything inspired from other art would be arbitrarily considered "copy-right". Frankly, i find that this exposes the inherent flaws of the concept of Copyright in itself. While i don't believe people should profit from digital copies of existing content, the whole notion that people can be criminalized for doing the digital equivalent of painting a reproduction of say the mona lisa for their own personal use, without physically stealing anything or using it for their own profit, is very silly. We live in a world where the only limit to reproduction of digital material is the bandwidth speed of peoples own internet speeds and hardware, and it should be treated as such. Copyright is simply an increasingly out-dated idea.

@@mechanicalmonk2020 Why should the source matter? It's an awful lot like saying that a specific crossbreed of plant can't be recreated by any other person and then that crossbreed being used to create a new crossbreed, because someone created the 'original' first. Or like suggesting that a few lines of code in a program can never be used in another program for a different purpose. This is silly. It's also ironically what leads to big corporations attempting to copyright claim specific styles of art, which.... _hurts_ all artist in general. It makes no sense for specific art styles to be the sole ownership of people or big entities, so the solution can't be rooted in that It's this mentality and it's exactly the sort of thing that leads to corporations claiming copyright on the moon. This is why i argue for The view that AI art should belong to all. Someone could use AI art in a game, but even if that game is sold, the game studio that borrows that art would not be able to own it themselves, it would be public domain. So this setup actually creates a motivation for game studio's to seek out artist so that the game studio owns all of its own assets.

In regards to UK stock, I get the feeling that Valve aren't discontinuing within the UK, I think it's the opposite.
Just like with Japan and China, I think they want to start selling in retail or at least have a distribution network in the UK itself.
When I got mine it didn't take that long but having to wait for it from the Netherlands wasn't exactly the greatest experience.
So I wouldn't be surprised if they maybe open a pop up store in London or something in the coming months before Christmas.

I think saying you use "AI" in a game should be viewed the same way as saying you use "databases" or "code" or "audio". It's just a tool. There are many ways to use it, not all of which are just "here is a picture that was generated by Midjourney". I care about devs securing the proper rights for whatever they use, but beyond that, it has to be judged on a case by case basis.

If you use a model, and you don't have all the rights to the data the model was trained on, you are a thief.

With the endless ethical and legal issues around GenAI, I would hope that Valve continue being cautious (even if it's just to cover their own arses). Once we have models and datasets for GenAI game assets that are trained from entirely ethical sources (artist permissions, licences, etc.) and not just the "scrape everything and train our models from that" approach that is currently used, then maybe it could be a good thing.

AI programs have been known to steal art and other peoples assets for a long time. AI atm is just a big massive search engine. Also privacy is a massive concern when it comes to AI programs and people are sold a lie when it comes to it overall. There is so much fishy stuff going on with it and what it is actually doing when you use it on any hardware. Hopefully a whole raft of laws come in to either ban it or control it and it's development.

He's not saying it's a silly idea. He's saying it likely isn't the case because the legwork for an OLED Deck is pretty massive (Valve needs to get the panels made which for this size and resolution isn't an easy feat, they need to redesign the Deck's architecture, and they likely need to make changes to the SOC in order to support an OLED panel).

I like the decision about the banning of AI art as an amateur artist. I have a lot of respect for professional artist and I think that there profession should be preserved. AI art is fun but I think that this aspect of copyright law is a good thing because AI art is very unclear when it comes to copyright and property. I gave up on drawing since the whole controversy but Valve's decision gives me hope to make some kind of living of my drawings. That said AI art can be fun for private use and I am not completely against and it can be used a creative tool so long as it doesn't violate artists' rights.

For arguments sake, How bad AI art can be is situational. As someone who has done art I’ve used others art as inspiration. Heck even some popular artist have styles you can tell have been taken from other popular artist. I say its situational because I’ve never seen any AI Art where compared side by side you can 100 percent tell it was taken from a source. I guess what I’m trying to ask is. What’s the difference from me using an artist style as inspiration and an AI doing the same?

Valve's position on AI is reasonable based on what seems to be the near universal method of training AI. It is a legal minefield and at some point someone with deep pockets will be hit with a copyright infringement lawsuit. Valve is ensuring they are not in the crosshairs of such an eventuality, or that if someone goes after them regardless they can show that they have operated in good faith and have not willfully facilitated the sale of unlicensed copyrighted content within games.
