How are the cache updates created? Are they generated automatically? I get many each day, sometimes multiple for the same game, and I've wondered how so many of these are being made is the developer isn't making them.

@@JacobDragyn pretty much yep! Steam will analyse your cache and use it for others. So ideally game developers need to run it through a few times before release on Deck to have it ready.

Hey Liam how is it if you only have the software plus the proton on your internal for the base model that it says it’s already close to full all the time? it’s pretty damn annoying they should’ve never even made 64 gig an option, i’m ordering the internal hard drive upgrade next week but it’s stupid as hell that I have to look at low disk space with no games on the internal every time I turn it on 🤦‍♂️🤡💫

Shaders and compatdata are stored on the internal ssd, you can symlink both to the sd card to save space, some games might break if you symlink them to the sd card but it's very rare and you can just put the folder back in the original place, you save a ton of space just by doing this

This is likely due to the shader cache filling it up, as it’s only stored on the main drive. A known problem I hope they sort.

Also of note is that a late 6.1 kernel is in testing on the Main branch. Main = Untested in Linux verbiage, just so nobody gets it twisted. Probably some minor power savings in there and maybe even a few extra frames in CPU hungry engines like RE. Overall system latency should improve as well.

They don’t recommend using anything larger than 2230 size SSDs but anything larger than 512 GB is perfectly fine

Great update. The more valve and devs work together on creating 'optimised for steamdeck' auto configs that just set up the game for it's best settings the more sales they will get on the platform I reckon. A win win for both. But will the publishers prioritise this or just "release and maybe fix later". Better to have good news right away rather than complaints I'd wager.

the shader cache fix is great news, I dreaded playing God of War, every time I would quit the game I would get a full shader cache download -- on my deck Metro Exodus was seemingly a constant download, deck wakes up -- download shader cache for it...

Can´t wait for the stable release of this update, because I am going to update my main PC, and planned to expand the Steam library on this machine further on. The LAN transfer file mode will help to avoid additional downloads of tons and tons of GB. Great! I am probably going to get the new JSAUX case. Storage space is gold :) Thanks for sharing!

When I read "Shader fixes" in the title I thought they finally added a native way to delete old shaders from no-longer installed games. I haven't gotten to a point in which that's a problem yet, but I know that a lot of users have their decks full with unnecessary shaders.

Steam Deck to PC is what I really need. I connect to the Internet with a 4G router (no fiber or even ADSL in my area), but I visit my parents weekly, and they have a fast fiber connection, so being able to download games on Steam Deck at my parent's and then transfer them locally to my PC would be fantastic. Hope that comes soon.

I tried windows 11 on steam deck for a month, but i decided to just go back to steam OS. Im just playing GTA 5 anyway and the experience is smoother on steamOS compared to windows 11. The device runs cooler as well. I just stream those unsupported games whenever i want to play them.
