there isn't really a commander upgrade system atm, but there is one currently in experimentation. The commander stops being a viable combat unit pretty quickly, except that it can cloak (pulls a fair bit of energy to do so) and has a "D-gun" that can insta-kill just about any unit, but getting close enough to use it is dangerous. It's always a nice unit to have around, though, since it builds pretty quickly

This is not new, there are many free RTS games that came from the same ancestor (Total Annihilation) as this one, such as Zero-K. I will be keeping an eye for this, hopefully the Commander system is good. As I am disappointed by Supreme Commander's Commander system. Not as "Supreme" as I thought it was. Zero-K is absurd where you can tech, into a Commander one man army.

@@gamingonlinux Correct. The UI is also very compute heavy, it has tons of real-time data in there, based on your selection. Though UI work in the Spring Engine is very hard. We've been looking for a LUA framework to be able to rebuild it faster, prettier and fully optimized with GL4 (like many of the new graphics we introduced this year. Still to be decided if and what framework we would want to use... or rebuild everything from scratch for GL4.. both options come with various caveats and a big time investment either way.

There is a hugely competitive scene and lots of room for gameplay optimization if you are competitive and looking to become good, that said there is no Supply, you can build units to your hearts content, and you can construct your own economy (which causes you to not invest resources in units so its risk/reward). During the early game micro means everything, you can keep a unit alive for an extreme time to maximize dps, and most economic structures are very fragile so letting one unit through can spell disaster so you have to be really cognisent on positioning. There is an 8v8 lobby that occupied 24/7 that you can join and learn, or you can just live spectate and see what players are doing. There is lots of nuisance strategy that you can do too, and build orders really matter most maps.

@michasmarzewski3670 graphics yes, interace not really. zero-k depsite having an old school interface everything is easy to read whereas BAR have all its unit control keys looking the same. there is also lots of additional keys on the top left of the screen to show terrain height, energy grid, erasing all pings and drawings at once, setting retreat zones, etc. BAR don't have that. you can even change the distance of which you see the unit icons on the fly.

@michasmarzewski3670 in what way is it above? while BAR is a perfect total annihilation successor with good visuals/sound design zero-k has some unique features you don't find in any other RTS. unless you like quick spam of tons of units for massive battles i do not see how BAR gameplay is superior to zero-k as they both do things differently despite sharing alot of similar units. even both games eco is different despite having both the same way of generating basic metal and energy.
