I set out on a mission to build a budget Linux gaming system that can keep up with the most recent DX12 titles. I have an RX 580 4GB and I get a huge fps drop, making the game a slide show for 2 seconds, at each time I make a ripost and everytime I take a hit. But that only happens after playing for a while. In the first minutes of gameplay, fps is pretty stable. Once it starts, it will keep dropping fps on these both situations. RX 580 4GB runs perfectly at high settings in my windows 10 so I keep switching to it just to play elden ring. edit: I just installed mangohud and just by having it on my launch options, showing the fps, fps graph, gpu and cpu usage during gameplay, I have no more fps drops on these mentioned situations. I'll keep testing.

Thanks a bunch for the video, I was looking for a budget build, and finding a linux video is really helpful! I'm surprised you included the 6500 (XT), since it's such a stripped down card, but it kinda fits the price point. We also can't justify including a 6600 in that price range, so you really went into all valid options.

Good video. I have installed Nobara Linux recently, doing my usual test on it. One thing however bugs me. MangoHUD shows the GPU and CPU load incorrectly. You have tested multiple GPUs in this video, and seems like you didn't have an issue with the overlay. Any idea what am I missing?

Open a bug report in mangohud's git repo, tell them your specs. it's probably picking up your sensor data wrong

Man… something's really really wrong with my config here. Got a Ryzen 5 1400 3.20 gHz, GTX 1050ti 4 GB and 24 GB 2133 mHz of ram, I should get at least 25–30 fps, right? But I shit you not, I'm getting 5–10 fps only. Tried proton GE 7.14, steam's proton experimental, and even steam's proton experimental bleeding edge beta to no avail. Anyone know what I could try?

By the way, seems like I'm doomed here. Got better performance after closing most stuff I had running and using gamemode + some launch options, but it still goes down to 15–20 fps when I get out of the tutorial caves and see the outside. Totally unplayable, even on 720p low settings the enemies go invisible because something about their rendering depends on the fps… bruh.

I'd try pushing the ram to 2666mhz if possible. I found on my zen+ Ryzen system that made a big difference

@@GloriousEggroll Thanks for the answer! I'll try that too. Strangely enough, I updated my proton GE and closed up some programs that were open and now I'm sitting at 30–35 fps 900p, finally! Something at least playable. I'll try other stuff though, I bet I can eek out more FPS.

r5 1400 is first gen ryzen 4c/8t and only turbos to 3.4ghz. -every- single processor ive tried that cannot hit higher than 3.6 struggles with this game at 1080p. The min spec requires a 3600. I'm not sure if 4c/8t at 4ghz would work, havent tested. maybe think about overclocking like 300mhz Also, 1050 ti is a pascal card -- which as noted in the video pascal struggles really hard. Last, try using gamemode to make sure your CPU is hitting its max turbo, it really boosts performance. I noticed this was needed for xeons

the performance is the same on both imo. I personally use KDE but have not seen any difference on gnome. I'm not picky about DE/Kernel tweaks things like that beyond basic fsync compatibility on the kernel side

I switch from GTX 1060 6GB to RTX 3060 TI 8GB and there are like 10-15% gain in FPS in Elden Ring. With i7 6700k and 32 GB ddr3 ram. From 45 FPS to 55 FPS in open world in Limgrave. CPU usage is 50-60%. In closed areas i got 60 FPS with both cards and CPU usage is 40-45% here.

@@GloriousEggroll You was right! I finally upgrade the CPU with Ryzen 5800X3D and now this game is like noting. I got full 60 FPS in max settings no mater what. This CPU is really one great monster. And i never get stuttering, also i got Samsung NVME 980 PRO. And still using GE-7.15, it's absolutely great for this game with Pop!_OS 22.04 with no launch options for the game.

@@deathxxx1231 the gaming benchmarks for that processor look really good, im not even worried about overclocking since most ryzen cpus run better when not oc'd anyway. as for fsync sorry I don't have any answers on that

You should really consider upgrading the CPU, ER struggles with anything less than 6 cores, regardless of clock speed

Can you make the game to run with FSYNC and do not crash after 3-4 hours gameplay? Because FSYNC give little more FPS and responsivness. Because if i want long play i need disable FSYNC and the game will never crash. To test this, you don't need actively play, just leave with AFK in some open world area and wait. The game will crash after some hours.

@GloriousEggroll - Can you provide some details on your configuration? I have Ryzen 5600X, 32GB DDR4 3600, and 6500 XT, and I get a consistent 19 - 25 FPS in Elden Ring. At least it is sort of playable with the 1.04 update, lol

So, quick update. From AUR I installed the steamos versions of Mesa and the associated drivers. I also grabbed the Proton Community Updater, which was an easy path to the latest Proton GE. I now get a solid 60 fps, even at 2304x1296 (which is my highest available resolution in game now, and fine by me). Thanks for the video - I might have just given up without seeing that this card was capable 🙃

Yikes that system is more than capable of 1080p60 at medium -- all of my specs/settings are listed in the video description. It sounds like something is seriously wrong on the hardware configuration end. The hardware specs themselves are more than capable -- check your temps, make sure your ram sticks are in the right slots, make sure your cpu is turboing properly, maybe try using gamemoderun to enforce performance mode while gaming.

How you get right of black screen launch of Elden Ring? For me, i need change proton versions or change some of launch options to get work. Or sometimes switch to steam with native libs or reverse to start the game again. After 10 hours of play with no problem i exit from game, then start again after some break, and most of time game won't launch. Do you have this problem? I see in Steam Deck have this issue too. Also some report: Proton-GE 7.15 work so great without stutters and fast loading the game.

I have a RYZEN 5 2600 + 16GB DDR4 CL16 at 3200MHz + GTX 1660 Ti 6GB GDDR6 running with Fedora Nobara 36 GNOME under GE-Proton 7.15 but I'm not getting 60 FPS on the open field. I tried the WINE_FULLSCREEN_FSR=1 to match your FSR mode but the same thing. Only places where I'm getting 60 are in the Roundtable Hold as well as Catacomb areas. Mine is a stable 44 FPS in the same areas you tested it. Using the 510.60.02 Driver for my GPU as well.

@@GloriousEggroll Update: Yes, I guess Fedora GNOME Nobara 36 just doesn't like my combination of PC parts. I tried Manjaro KDE Plasma today - a bit of a hassle but not as compared to how it was last year to get all of dependencies. But yes, I got Elden Ring running at 60 FPS now. Yeah its weird, I tried gamemoderun too still on the same average FPS and my temps for GPU and CPU are 57C and 55C respectively while running it. In Windows 11 I can run the game at 1080p Maximum settings (with an NVIDIA Filter basically reshade running) and play around 55-60 FPS on the starting area. I used Manjaro KDE Plasma back in October 2021 which I really enjoyed it back in the day, I'm going to try that tomorrow and see if I'll have better luck in performance on my system. Maybe I just have a really weird PC.

My guess here would be maybe your CPU isn't turbo boosting correctly on all cores or isnt hitting the 3.8ish boost range. Maybe check temps and run the game with gamemoderun so that the system uses performance mode when it runs the game

My understanding is that the 6500xt is the way it is because they repurposed a die meant for laptops that would have relied on the igpu for encoding etc. It kind of made sense in the worst part of the gpu apocalypse since they could produce it so much cheaper than a 5500xt because the die is so tiny. Now though with used prices coming back down, and parts like the 6600 and the 3050 getting closer in price it just makes no sense. Hopefully it eventually drops under 150 where it really belongs with sane memory and shipping pricing in the global market.
