I've added a NOSTEAM envvar to my latest proton version which allows you to log into your FFXIV Steam OR non-steam version, and/or use the steam free trial to log into your non-steam account. ffxiv doesnt use any anticheat from client side. if you're referring to other games that use things like EAC/BattleEye, i have no idea. thats all up to Valve. I don't have any ties to them or what they do behind the scenes

Great video thanks I will give a try, by the way is just me or your audio from your voice is too low, I need to volume up at 50 % my system to hear you. Usually I use it at 25%.

when I try to open the free trial steam version, it still just closes when I press enter on the Start game screen. Not sure what else I need to do for this.

I had to downgrade nvidia drivers to 460.84 from 470.xx to get it to work.

@@GloriousEggroll Okay, I deleted my other comments. I don't know exactly what packages did it, but I know that it didn't work before a reboot, and it does now. I'll have to remember that. Maybe it was something with DXVK, It didn't make it obvious, but I felt it giving me the stink eye from the very beginning. Thanks for the hard work, it works great now.

If the game isnt launching after you hit enter from entering your password thats likely a graphics driver or gpu issue. you need hardware that is at least able to run DXVK, and need both 32 and 64 bit drivers installed.

I don't know how to fix this but when I used any version of proton including this one the launcher just pops up and say Final Fantasy XIV but does nothing. I don't know what to do to get it to the old launcher.

@@GloriousEggroll I am having the same issue as well. If I use 6.18 GE and hit play, it brings up the screen like it's going to load the launcher, then just terminates. Game is fully installed with Lutris and the link has been made. If I switch Proton versions, the launcher opens, but it tries to use the Steam version of the game. Alas

Update: reinstall after the proton GE install. if your file size is 58ish mb you dont have the full launcher downloaded which caused the problem.

might be you using the built-in gpu drivers; i was getting 30fps or so in Lutris with the built in gpu drivers with my RX 6700xt but then grabbed the AMD licensed drivers and it went up to 160fps. now im trying this out to see if it'll run better

Works fine here. Getting about 150-200+ fps at 4k max settings. Sounds like something wrong with your setup.

Just a tip btw for a future tutorial: lower your screen resolution or increase plasma's scaling. Because right now it's hard to everything without going into fullscreen on yt constantly

Fantastic guide - was able to go from a fresh installation of Ubuntu to having FFXIV up and running the same day! A question about non-steam accounts: I have a windows installation completely off-steam that I've been using with an SE trial account and have been able to wait in queue to load into world. I got everything running on Ubuntu by using a sym-link to the same install path I was using on windows, and steam's "free trial" launcher; now when trying to login, I'm told that trial accounts cannot wait in queue to load in and immediately the client closes. Since the game data should be identical to the version I was running previously, is there some sort of workaround / launch option to open FFXIV as the SE licensed (free trial) version through steam? or am I better off trying to use Lutris with a stand-alone launcher and no steam?

AHA. 15 minutes later and I've got it. For anyone else hitting this issue, I went to the prefix folder > drive_c/users/steamuser/Documents/My Games/FFXIV , then went to the matching path on my windows install (users/[user]/documents/etc etc), copied over all files EXCEPT FFXIV_BOOT.cfg and FFXIV.cfg. now I have all my hotbars and configurations, and am logging in despite queue. Installed this. Steam does not list this version when I go to "compatability." It lists around 6 versions. there is an "experimental" and a 6.3-5 but not a 6.13-GE-1

There's a link in the description, that leads to the proton GE page. If you don't want to install it manually and want it to update more easily, you can install protonup.

6.xx-GE-* are custom Proton builds that aren't supplied by Valve.

Hey man sorry to bother you, your tutorial works fine and this is completely unrelated. I just got into linux a few days ago with Ubuntu and after installing wine / lutris I get random system freezes, not even my keyboards capslock light will turn off. It happens randomly, sometimes I can play games for 2-3 hours straight with no problem and as a example sometimes just with lutris open the system hangs. This is on a essentially fresh install with barely anything installed.

hey GE, do you know if it's possible to fix the cinematic issues? like I know you can bypass the first cinematic to get in game, but there are other cinematics that may appear while you're playing the game and it crashes

Only the new game movie with the wagon cart is broken. All other cinematics work fine. I've played the entire game through all expansions and have not had crashes on any of these.

For some reason, when I select the data center, and it connects, I just get dropped into a black screen with the spinning ticker in the bottom right hand corner. Then nothing happens. Using Proton-6.19-GE-2

New game cinematic hasn't been disabled in your config. Open FFXIV.cfg in your prefix and find CutsceneMovieOpening, set it to 1

Do you have any plans to support the new version of the launcher (assuming such a thing is even possible from your end)? SE is saying they'll discontinue the old launcher in March 2022, so the clock is ticking for us Proton users. I've never been able to get past the splash screen on the new launcher even with GE.

BtW. I was searching for a way to install XiV on Linux, but unfortunately I do not have a 4k monitor... So I'll have to watch someone else's video. Sorry
