You said in the earlier parts of the video that all characters have weapons specification. Is the Sword of Ianna a unique weapon with any specific categories or each character has a unique form of the sword?

Thanks for dropping by! Sword of Ianna is a special weapon which can be used by all the 4 characters. Everyone can do a few basic attacks and the special long range attack. It doesn't change its form based on the player character. Though that being said, of you want to use it also as a regular weapon then only the barbarian can use it effectively. (Use combos) 🙂 This is from memory and watching some vids online. Without the sword's special attack the last few bosses would be very, very difficult.

Combat is very good and ahead of it's time, never understood why it didn't get more exposure. It's better than Dork Souls in every way except dated graphics, of course

Fuck windows 10! Who needs that garbage anyway... Barbarian is the most boring and the most poorly animated character. To match the setting - he has the most boring move sets and is as clumsy as the stone golems that you occasionally have to defeat. Controlling him is like trying to do BMX tricks on a bulldozer. Zoe or Sargon is the way to go. This makes the game play and feel completely different. Especially with Zoe. She can run circles around anyone and make ork-coleslaw faster than any other character. Naglfar is merely ok. His cooler-looking late-game weapons are way too cumbersome to use at will. Otherwise, his combat is not nearly as stylish as what you have with Sargon or Zoe's moves.

awwww man this game got a remaster? daaaaaaamn crazy to think how old the game is this game is toe to toe with dark souls both games are great but maan imo this game surpass dark soul its because of the fighting mechanic its actually difficult remembered when i play this game f t f t and it was phenomenal this was a gem man back in the day but since that it got a remaster which means everything is fix it just made the game more gooder

I just love how I spent a whole week trying to figure out how to get this game working with the best graphics settings and being stable... and now they released the "remaster" which works even better with no hassles whatsoever. ... ... ... Salty-sarcastic-rant over. Nah, it's really amazing that they did it and I hope that more people get to enjoy this gem from the past. 😊

I played this game on Win7 ( old game version) and also got crashes. In new game 2021 is everythyng same + HD res

The graphics, the narrators voice and delivery, the music all perfectly come together. This is the only game in history that did real time reflections with DX7. Even the dynamic lighting was ahead of its time.

Honestly, this game was way ahead of it’s time. The dynamic lighting and water textures are incredible 20 years later.

I have played this game multiple times with all characters and I think Dwarf and the barbarian are the weakest.

Damn I played this with an 8mb graphics card at first probably at 10fps lol. Only after upgrading to a 32mb nVidia riva TNT I managed to get it running as it was meant to.

Best weapon of the Barbarian is Ice Axe for me. I just finished playing as the barbarian but for some reason I am unable to pull off combos and special attacks so easily so I threw away the Doom axe. It is either my keyboard or some issue with polling rates not matching correctly. Most useless weapon is the Great fire sword. Too slow to trigger and the secondary attack rarely works on any enemy including the relatively slow ones.

the Doom axe kinda sucks anyway. Too much - defence taking away from you, and its special ability is too slow and weak. You know what weapon *I* stick to for a LONG time ? The *FLAT* sword. Why? Well -- *HUGE* range (best of ALL the barb weapons) plus the special attack is simple to execute, fast, and deals tons of damage.

I used Q and threw Ianna's sword which turns into a missile and returns to you automatically on impact after doing about 1000 damage. Use that with the special attack and you basically don't need to use melee unless in a tiny space.

Had to log in, just to thumb up this video. Good work 👍 What most people not seem to get, is the weapons have Power and a Defense numbers. The stronger the weapon the lower the players defense. This directly affects the damage dealt obvious, but also the damage taken. So it makes sense to stick to a lower level weapon sometimes to have increased defense. Yes you have to hit the enemy more often, but for that you have Power Attacks. This is about high risk, high reward gameplay. Kill your enemies in one or two chops, but be pepared to run out of potions if your are not proficient enough playing this game. For an example, depending on the weapon in your hand, Death Knights can either damage you with their lightning attacks, or not. Most people who complain this game is "too hard" or "i run out of potions" always use the latest weapon they find. And most of the time these weapons are over the players own level and drive your Defense rating into the minus- negatvies. BoD also has an interesting "Difficulty" selction as i would call it. With enough playtime on the clock, this makes sense. Amazon = easy Knight = medium Tukaram = hard Dwarf = unfinished Beta character To be frank, im playing this game for 20 years now, always installed. I was there when the first 144p trailer was released on CD from a Gaming Magazine. And was totally blown away by the Demo, that was also on a CD. Because the interent was bascially not a "thing" at that time. But i never had this much issues with BoD when it comes to the amount of crashes or other bad game behavior you did. And i played this game on every Windows since XP, (Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, 10) across multiple hardware configurations. The OpenGL renderer was/is a plight, there is no other way to describe it. It will kill your lighting (ruining the shadow effects) henceforth the entire athmosphere of the game. It will utterly crush the textures of characters and objects. Looks like molded together 256 colored textures or cr*p like that. An absolute eyesore. OpenGL also causes massive ingame issues like breaking cutscenes for what ever crazy reason (alt+tab can fix that), and the infamous fog fix is needed. Or places like the Gorge of Orlok or the Forge of Xshathra makes seeing things impossible. But the solution is rather simple. Just don't use OpenGL... as mentioned in the video. I also noticed increased game crashing when saving. But only if i navigate the menus too fast, no joke. The ocasional crash at level end can happen. But saving regulary will help. Playing 3-4 hours, ending multiple levels without a single crash, inclduing multiple reloads because of player death is not a rarity. And you will die in this game, a lot, because jumping... lol PS: Use the numerous amazing Mods. Profit³ !

I recently put together a late 2000 computer with a Pentium 4 1.5Ghz CPU and 512MBs of RAM and I got hooked on this game again after deciding to re-install on a whim. I'm playing the Spanish version (Blade: The Edge of Darkness) and even though my Spanish skills are limited I do get a kick out of hearing the voice acting and learning or remembering the occasional word here and there.

but on steam it works as a baby :D

A patched version was released about 1-2 weeks after when I had finished with this game... just my luck. 😅

I have yet to find a review where they talk about Attack Power and Defense. How it is affected by the weapons the player uses. And how it affects actual combat. The combat in this game is high risk, high reward. The stronger the weapon the lower the defense rating of the character. (It can be seen in big red numbers in the Weapon/Combo Spreadsheet.) Meaning you receive more damage. If you use a weapon several levels above your own. You may dish out a lot of damage. But a few hits can put you down from full life. And you may not even be able to do even a simple power attack. While on the other hand. If you choose to use a "lower level" weapon, basic attacks may be weaker. But not only can you do several power attacks in a row. Some emenies may damage you right next to nothing. The Knight with Heavy Armor is completely impervious to the Death Knights homing Electro Sphere attack. While lower armored chars like the Barb and the Amazon have to gear down in weapon power, to boost their defense. Just to achieve the same imperviousity... you get my meaning. This is such an interesting part of the game, but no one ever talks about it. As if people never even noticed in the past 21 years...

I have a memory of finishing the last boss with flight joystick as a kid... but I have no memory of levels between beginning and last boss. wtf was I doing

Yup, Dark Souls pretty much ripped this game off!

*Seems you didn't know that Steam released a 'remastered' version that fixes the bugs, adds widescreen + control + game pad capable.

@@kallestofeles Oh, I have a question for you since you played so recently. How does the armor actually work? I'm considering replaying it, only using weapons that DON'T degrade your armor/defense. So, I wonder what it would be like playing through with early/special weapons that don't/barely lower defense. So a higher emphasis on defense vs attack power! Any thoughts on that? *I also wonder if damage to shields is lowered, the higher your defense? So, if you use lower end weapons (with less defense penalty), would shields last longer?

The game was updated and is for purchase on GOG, with the support for W10 / W11 systems. Also some other minor tweaks were applied, like gamepad support...

As a kid i played it and back then it was kicking my ass but it was do memorable that i wanted to play it again as a grown up. It still kicked my ass but i still had a lot of fun this is the OG every other game called "souls like" lol should go to sleep. The combat here is one of a kind

I was blown away when I found out this game is available on Steam with widescreen support. I’ve been playing the Steam release for about ~10hrs and it runs absolutely peachy, not a single glitch or bug and crashes are completely out of the question. The game runs flawlessly and it’s even more fun with every new play through (obvious that I completed the game with all chars multiple time)

Excellent review mate! I played this game with my brother back in a day and it's still considered one of our favourites despite never being able to complete it then.

Just bought it on Ps4 for 15€ its totally worth it so far. Started with Knight and got my butt handed to me :D It kinda reminds me alot of Deathtrap Dungeon on Ps1.

This is one of the best games ever made. GoG remastered it and the graphics is definitely improved but the controls are a bit clunky. However, it doesn't crash at all anymore.

I don't ever see anybody talk about the fact that you can edit some of the files to change the stat line of characters and weapons. 👍 I recommend staying away from messing with the animation though cuz that can cause the game to crash or some of the characters that look like they're twisting into a pretzel. 🤦‍♂️

Man you are a troubleshooting GOD, you EARNED to run the game, thank god for the re-release that allows us mere mortals to play this game without having to do all those configs and workarounds (even if guided and told how to do it I'm sure its not easy for everyone) just wanna recognise your work in that regard, hats off to you. As for the game itself, is one of the games of my life if not my absolute favorite. When Dark Souls came up I was a little disappointed with it cause I was comparing it to Blade and Dark Souls lacked any combo system at all... it was a total let down for me in that regard... I knew it was a great game still, but I simply couldn't enjoy it the same. As for the eternal debate, I doubt that Blade was an inspiration for Dark/Demon Souls at all, but at the same time, Blade is more similar to a "souls" than Kingsfield or any other previous From Software game. P.S: If you like the english narrator, I have to inform that spanish narrator is 100 times better (incredible but true) it's simply insane how the narrator alone can give the game such epicness.
