Its unfortunate that a lot of things in the linux world that are touted as being better like tiling WM, cli programs and minimalist software as you've mention here is very difficult to configure. It would really be nice to have installation scripts become more of the norm when these pieces of software are released. Additionally, I understand that it goes against the minimalist philosophy to have software bundles with many themes and options however to have something like DE made with minimalist software would be a godsend for people without the time to dig and dig into man pages and convoluted config but still want the advantages of minimalist software and paradigms (like tiling WM). As a fellow software developer I'm sure like me you get tired of being at work and then at home having to do all this config just because you can and want a better setup. Long comment but basically I agree things should be easier for the end user and minimalist software should be more accessible by either having organizations bundle or have large installation scripts to handle 99% of config for the user.

I've long fantasized about a Linux distro with wizards as a standard way of installing packages.

If you want a minimalist DE, like something with the extensibility of i3 and the completeness of KDE or XFCE, LARBS might be your best bet. Luke, the same dude that made the mutt wizard also made an auto rice script for arch based systems. All you have to do is have a (preferably fresh) install of arch or something like manjaro, and then you just download and run the script. It can be found at www.larbs.xyz

Aw man, I'd like to see more of what you like about Sylpheed. The state of email on Linux leaves a lot to be desired. The main things I'm looking for are a modern UI with a layout that's optimized for 16x9 screens (like Geary has), a robust filtering system, and really strong IMAP support. Mailspring looks great but I'm not crazy about having to sign up for a Mailspring account in order to use it. And it's Electron. I'd rather have a native app. Sylpheed in this video looks a lot better than it did on the screenshots, a lot more modern. Maybe I'll check it out.

@@folksurvival No, I wound up going back to Thunderbird, then tried BlueMail, then went back to Thunderbird again when BlueMail started working. At this point I'm holding out for Thunderbird's imminent redesign. The modern 3-column paradigm isn't just easier on the eyes, it's functionally more compatible with widescreen monitors. And having the information presented more vertically in the message list is a must.

You’re totally right! I spent hundreds of hours trying to set up my email in emacs. Switched over to thunderbird and I accept the bloat 😅
