mkdir -p /usr/share/themes/empty/xfwm4/

touch /usr/share/themes/empty/xfwm4/themerc

Well is not like you have to ditch your XFCE setup just to try i3, you can simply install it along with xfce and it's not even to heavy just a 200-300 M. It does take a while to get used to it thought

Yes indeed. I set up i3 over MATE for a while, and that was pretty good too. Now my machine uses i3 with no desktop environment / a manually installed collection of apps.

I have started to make my own version of this, working great so far and I even got all i3wm keybindings working! EDIT: I'm glad that you're trying VIM, It'a really worth it!

i've been meaning to try some tiling wm but didn't wanted to leave xfce and this 2 videos are awesome :) thanks! do you know if there's a way to leave some margin between windows as seen on most WMs?

Thanks a lot for the trick. Since I have been using windowck panel plugins I've wanted to try that. However, I find the borderless theme (from xfce-look.org) you mentionned, quite useful as it helps find the active window.

Neon Knights Violet theme for Xfce almost completely gets rid of borders, but adds a thin violet line around windows....doesn't affect titles, though. you forgot to add the lines and your video needs a close-up so i can read those lines. Figured it out: mkdir -p /usr/share/themes/empty/xfwm4/ touch /usr/share/themes/empty/xfwm4/themerc You can resize with alt+F8 and move with alt+F7, though neither are as exact as you can get with a mouse.

After using this configuration for 2 weeks I think the only problem with this is that you cant resize your windows, it needs to be not empty to be able to resize some windows, other windows can be resized but is up to the program that gives you that option.

Most don't realize that xfce4 is the original window manager for x that is why they all use xfce4 applications

Try logging out and logging back into your xfce session, or just reboot your machine. If that still doesn't work, make sure you've added the theme to the correct directory with the correct permissions, and you have xfce4wm running.

Good question! I think that would defeat the purpose of tiling as most tiling window managers are keyboard-driven, but maybe you could try right-clicking the program window and selecting "exit" or "close" if the program allows. Some programs may even respond well to the escape key. If you discover any additional or more accurate solutions, please share them wherever applicable as they may help others along the way.
