Sounds like unity wants their cake and wants to eat it too.
What's really annoying is in many cases tax payer money is used to selectively enforce a companies laws at the companies whim.

The response from Epic is just epic.
Basically, come work with us instead.
Such a slap to Unity, and clearly a deserved one.

I was working on a game on Unity, but now I will finish the game in Godot. Since it works nicely on Linux.
I actually was only using Windows because I was working with Unity and now I don't need to do it anymore.

Honestly, I like developing with Godot better anyway, but I also dislike Microsoft's development stack in general.

Our company dropped Unity for Godot a long time ago :D

It takes years to write a game. If terms get changed during that timeline it can destroy the businesses model and financially ruin the developers. Who is ever going to develop for Unity again?

Yep! Really needs to be less vague. If someone has to guess what your terms mean then it's wrong.

This title should be change for those uninitiated. This should be titled unity engine, otherwise some might confuse it for unity desktop...

I understand the need for growing companies to grow, but the phrase "Companies have to grow" is wrong.
No they don't. If your company has reached saturation, then you're a successful company that should be happy with what you have. If you need more resources to keep your company afloat, then do what every company does and outsource. The NEED for a saturated company to grow doesn't exist. If growing your company makes you do these kinds of changes that can economically ruin entire businesses simply for monetary gain, then don't grow your company. If you can stay afloat, then just stagnate where you are and preserve your reputation.

I was thinking the same thing. A company doesn't need to grow, it just needs to make a reasonable profit.

seems like Unity thinks they are the only game in town or at least they are trying to make it that way ...

Oh, well. Good reason to not use the biggest source of asset flips on Steam. Not that I was planning to use Unity....
But this is a cautionary tale about why software licenses are important. Because when you have companies like Unity that have clauses that allow them to change the terms and conditions without notice you are setting yourself up for trouble.
This is why FOSS is so important. Especially for core tools.
But, I do feel for the devs who are screwed over by this. Its why I'm very very leery of commercial software.

Even more insane, this isn't going to help their business any.
This destroyed good will with the devs, probably didn't make the players very happy, and made any prospective devs.
Plus, just because you can do something, doesn't make it right.

Changing terms of service should only impact new users not old one that did not sign up with those terms, kudos LOGIC.
Its like you implement new laws and apply them to everyone who ever lived on this planet.

Retroactively changing the terms of service is pretty scummy.
