Had to add LC_ALL=C %command% to the launch options to start the normal (Unity5) version of the game.
previous video was on public_branch which has Unity4 version so obviously worse performance.

Why set LC_ALL? Is there some problem with your usual locale settings and Unity 5?

Run _locale_ without arguments for a list of the relevant environment variables and their values (as seen by that process.)

When you say without LC_ALL, do you mean when unset? If yes, could be your other locales, could be useful to list them and see if they are not using default values.

Setting LC_ALL to French or German was an issue for XCOM 2, leading to graphical garbage. This was due to the fact that in these languages, the decimal separator is a comma instead of a point (I think the same issue happend with LC_NUMERIC). The Archlinux wiki advises nowadays not to set LC_ALL at all unless for debugging, and this was Feral's advice too. What would happen then in your case? Can you also verify your LC_NUMERIC to see if this is the cause?
