Turns out that the device is a re-colored gravity gun; all it does is shoot explosive energy balls that don't harm the user. It's mostly used to rocket jump and solve puzzles that involve moving heavy or inaccessible objects. The game also features the addition of light-based stealth: enemies don't see/attack you in the dark. If the place you got stuck in was the last room in the video, the solution was using the crooked lamp at 4:30, which you tried to, but were too far away for it to work.
