I think I might've said this on another one of your vids but I don't really put a lot of stock into verified status. I've had too many verified games work but fall short of my own standard for playable and many more unverified games that ran great. I tend to go by protondb first, then youtube vids if it's a game I don't already own. If I already own the game I'll just give it a go, something that's much more palatable since buying a big sd card.

I think valve needs to change the method and the measure for the verified rating. In my experience for over 8 months on the deck, almost anything just works well, forcing a proton version or popping up manually the keyboard should NOT be enough to label a game as playable. On the other hand, they must be more severe with the performance: some verified games struggle to maintain 40 or even 30 fps. If a game has low or inconsistent fps or frametime, should NOT be labeled as verified. It works sure, but it's not a very good experience.

It's honestly insane to think about just how many damn games are either Playable or Verified. 9,000+ is literally TWICE as much as the Switch game library and 3X THE PS4 LIBRARY. Seeing it that way is literally just mind-blowing. It really is the biggest library in the world. I'm so excited to get mine in the mail today.

And yeah, it's insane because there's countless titles that are not Verified or whatever that are perfectly playable too (arguably bc Valve hasn't gotten around to verifying them.)

And that’s just the deck verified games. I have more emulated titles than official steam titles on my steam deck, and some of the official titles I’ve gotten running perfectly fine on it are technically not “verified.” When you consider that it’s possible to dock the steam deck and play a myriad of games that require mouse and keyboard through the use of Bluetooth peripherals with extremely low latency depending on the peripherals and internet connection, it’s hands down the most versatile console ever.

It's great for the Deck to have this support and progress consistency for Verified. The fact that Valve is working so diligently to get so much working and cleaned up... ON LINUX is a feat in and of itself. Game stability and support on the platform is just incredible to think about now. These Proton fixes, and what Proton is as a compatibility layer designed to do, its like the Steam Deck was the launchpad for an even bigger pursuit, right under our noses. The amount of work in the last couple years towards Linux support through Proton is the achievement to the PC gaming industry that isn't mentioned at all. We have to shout out to the devs for their continuos hard work improving Proton. Liam, please feel free to mention it to our Deckers!

When Proton is updated, does the Steam Deck automatically use the new version, or do you need to set it manually?

When an update is released, the Deck will download automatically just like a game update. It will then use that for games you have, unless you have forced the game to use a different version or Valve has flagged the game to use an older one.

@Brian Nance ah so meaning since the latest is proton 8-2 and the previous version is 7.0.6 i think. Sorry if my numbers are incorrect, the steam deck is not with me right now. Then it is not automatically using the 8-2 since the previous is at 7. Got it. Thanks. One more question. Is it advisable to manually set it to 8-2 as it is not automatically set to the latest yet? Whilst it's great to see so many games verified; honestly the service ProtonDB offers is invaluable. The amount of games that are listed as unsupported that I've gotten running just from the advice on ProtonDB is astounding. Zone of the Enders 2, Oneechanbara ZX2, Bullet Girls Phantasia (L-Lay off me ok?) and Trails in the Sky are all listed as unsupported and so far; the only one giving me slight trouble is Trails in the Sky and thats only with the cutscenes that seem to be stuttering. Speaking of cutscenes, it seems one of the biggest problems facing Steam Deck seems to be video codecs. I wonder how many games are listed as unsupported simply because the rights to that games codex haven't been worked out yet. I may be wrong with how that stuff works so please, anyone let me know; because Biomutant has tons of problems involving videos playing and it seems to be all codex based. Weird.

Deck verified is nice, but in my experience protondb is generally a better source for actual compatibility. Deck verified mostly tells you that the game works well with a controller, but most of the time a quick controller profile tweak can fix the issue.

When you play a Verified game Valve will pop up with a survey basically asking if the game is in your experience Verified. I think this is a great step but it would also be handy to have it on untested games. Ultimately I'd like to see a community response from these surveys featured on Valves store like a rating. I use ProtonDB but official upfront feedback on the store would be best for ease of access.

Every time a dev plays the "muh fragmentation muh QA costs" bullshit card, I can't help but roll my eyes so fucking hard they start revving my head backwards and I become an SUV trying to get off a mud pool. It was like that even before the Steam Deck was a thing. Reading that *now* when the Deck is *exactly* what those people were asking for since the beginning, with the added audacity of ditching even WINE/Proton of all things, is just pure "fuck you" energy coming from them and that makes me pissed in levels I can't describe with human words. Welp. It's not like Roblox of all things will actually be missed, what with their shady child labour practices and everything. We're better off without it anyway, let it burn.

Been playing the Unsupported Ghost of a Tale just fine on my Deck. Granted, it seems a battery killer so it's plugged in, but I nearly always play plugged in. Decky Plugins are super useful for the additional details on compatibility.

Epic Game Store launcher works perfectly fine with Steam Deck. Plenty of videos out there to help folks install it. Heroic Launcher isn't good since you cannot use your Cloud saves. That's a huge deal breaker for me.

so verified isn't the end all. I also have protondb installed in decky so I can also see that at a glance. reading comments on both can usually get you some idea how it works on deck in real life. Overall they seem to be more strict. they make things look bad with 3 big yellow symbols and 2 green ones and the thing runs perfectly. literally perfectly out of the box. so it's crazy. then you get things like Ubisoft where one game loads fine then on the literal next Ubisoft game the launcher won't work. it makes actual no sense except Ubisoft sucks. and they seem to have different versions on the launcher embedded into each game and the deck doesn't figure that out. I hear going to desktop mode and installing it all properly works but I just got mad and deleted them. which doesn't hurt them cuz it's been paid for lol. hopefully ubisoft can go back and make their launcher more consistent in games they still currently sell on the store so they work right without having to work yourself to play a game you paid forl.

3:17 "[...]you need to update it from discover in desktop mode." (talking about updating the Heroic flatpack) You don't actually _need_ to leave game mode, there is an extension for decky loader that lets you update your flatpack when in the game mode interface. It's called autoflatpacks I think

The Steam Deck, combined with the stupid things Microsoft does to Windows, has motivated me to want to switch to Linux for my PC. I sadly have to wait until I get a new PC though since I have important stuff on Windows that will go away with the installation of Linux.

As good as more Linux love is, I've been feeling let down by some publishers going backwards like Roblox and Paladins, neither of which I can play on Linux anymore. Still, 90+% of my games do work, and they keep me busy enough... 🤷
