I find Linux more enjoyable to use than MacOS. I switched my Hackintosh over to Manjaro when the Steam Deck was first announced to get used to Linux before the Steam Deck arrived. These days I have it running Arch.

@@vilian9185 I've distro hopped a lot in the year and a half I've been a linux user since deck came out and I always come back to arch, because archinstall is piss easy, arch has the most documentation/tutorials, is up there among the distros with the most apps, and has the most up to date packages which for workstation stuff is a bad thing but gamers want the bleeding edge for maximum performance. Ironically, it's the distro that's given me the least issues of the ones I've tried too, despite being "unstable rolling release". I'd be perfectly comfortable recommending arch to newcomers, as long as you let them know about archinstall.

@@vilian9185 naaa...its fine any problem can be fixed with a bootable USB and doing chroot into his own partition if any program breaks or stop working, he can always rollback with pacman -U [old version] Arch isn't hard, anyone who understand KISS/DIY can find a way to make it work. Nowadays you don't have that much issues like in the past, the last thing that really compromised your experience was Grub issues.

I doubt it, not a whole lot of need when Proton gets like 99% of the way there. Until the user share is a fair amount higher, any extra put into a native linux build to potentially squeeze a lil more performance doesn't seem worth it when Proton can just do most of it for now.

Best settings really is so weird for me, because it varies so wildly. More often than not I will set the game resolution to 960x540 and have the built in FSR handle upscaling, because on the small screen there is not a big enough difference that I will care, and it either gives me more battery life, or pushes a game from 30 to 40 fps. As for refurbished Steam Decks, I wonder if mine will be in there, as I sent one in with a defective APU. Everything else worked fine, but I got a brand new Deck rather than them repairing mine.

I have a feeling the Hardware Survey could actually significantly underestimate the amount of active Steam Deck users. The survey depends on users actively choosing to participate in it, and despite using the Steam Deck a lot, only once have I actually been given the option of participating in the survey on it, whilst it's caught me a few times on my desktop PC, even if I use it less. Perhaps the Hardware Survey should be checking if a Steam user frequently uses a Deck, in addition to their currently hardware surveyed device. Having said that, Valve will already have all the data they need on the Deck, and with more and more developers starting to actively support it, I think it's quite telling that the Deck is definitely leaving it's mark on the industry.

I just finished “Super Kiwi 64” on the Deck. It fit the handheld experience, albeit with some quirks like being unable to adjust resolution or exit from an in-game menu. It’s a good $3 if you just want to run around, collect stuff, not think much, and finish in one sitting. It’s somewhat unpolished, but it controls well.

Yeahh most people likely use the steamdeck as a secondary device, that's what I bought it for as I do have a pretty beastly desktop PC, with a 12th i7, and a 6900xt running arch Linux with kde Wayland. Yet I haven't touched that PC in weeks because I've been playing on my steamdeck instead. Probably because I work from home and my work desk is the same desk with my gaming desktop on it, so being able to get away from my desk and game is a huge deal. And honestly the steamdeck may not run the games at like the highest possible settings, but it's a solid medium settings machine and it works well for that.

Just like this month's market share, my hopes of devs starting to make decent native Linux ports like they should've been doing since a decade ago has risen up by 0.52%. Sure, feeble, but better than nothing, hopefully it'll only snowball from here on out. I also hope at some point I'll get to buy the damn thing in Brazil, even refurbished. Those dropped prices are such a tease, dammit, enough to make me care a bit less (but not totally) about the fact I would be taxed up my ass if I imported it.

On the topic of selling "high quality" refurbished Steam Deck (SD), I got an idea for when a Steam Deck 2 eventually releases (hopefully not for years but eventually). What if we were to send our SD to Valve and exchange that for a discounted SD2? That will make let Valve have some spare components for reuse, while gamers won't leave their old SD to gather dust (or worse, throw them away). Being environmentally conscious helps both sides. What do you guys think? On another note, what's a proper/official channel to report Steam Deck issues/suggestions? I don't know if this is a bug, but Steam Deck shouldn't automatically start downloading whichever Proton is at the top of your list when trying force a different Proton version? Good work with the news videos Liam, as always, but I'm happy you're enjoying yourself with Baldur's Gate III :)

It can sometimes be very annoying to troubleshoot these type of issues. I have a 3080Ti and I was having an issue with Tiny Tina's Wonderland. It would not run on my very high end Linux PC, running Fedora 38. However, it ran perfectly on my SteamDeck. For a while, I played it on the SD. Then recently, I wanted to get it working on the PC. I had tried several things to get it working, but none of them worked. Every other high end game ran great on my PC. Then I recalled in the past, there being a significant difference between which method of installation was used for Steam itself. You can get different results, if you use an install from a rpm repository(Fedora default software location) or if you choose to install Steam from a flatpak(universal application installer). I switched to "flatpak" and then EVERYTHING worked. Why this happens is I believe related to the way "flatpak" works behind the scenes as it installs everything it needs in it's own "world" you could say, to not get technical. It can end up installing libraries(or prerequisites) that are different versions than are installed globally in your Linux distro. And this means, the games can end up using different libraries via a flatpak install, then they would in a "normal" install. Sometimes this results in things having a better chance of working. The downside is, flatpak(and other methods similar to it) tend to use more disk space as a result. Not a huge amount, but you should be aware that is a difference. Just mentioning it, as it may allow you to get around issues you've had. You can look up "flatpak" or other application distribution methods like it for more info. It depends on your Linux distribution as to what might be useful. Fedora supports flatpak, so it's a solid option for Fedora users like me. Also there are MANY other applications, some of which are designed for Windows, that run in these type of environments too. Lastly, I wouldn't use BOTH methods if you decide to try it. I'd remove installed Steam games on the PC and then Steam, before installing Steam in a different "environment" such as flatpak.

Gotta consider that Apple has never done anything to promote gaming on macOS unlike Linux with Proton for compatibility and Steam Decks for actual hardware. Apple is more of a "For Creators" company than anything else. Though I am surprised that it took this long to overtake an OS even without the Deck where 75% of games can't even run because of required drivers and software like Direct X for example.

On the topic of best settings videos...there are some channels (Cryobyte, specifically) that try to come up with different sets of settings that optimize for battery life, fidelity, or balance. Their videos are fantastic, they show data, testing methodologies, etc. Viewers can pick and choose what they like. I do ignore folks that just post a random screenshot of their settings and call it "best"

I'm glad that Linux is progressing, but I don't consider it a significant achievement. macOS uses the ARM architecture, and x86 games don't work on it. Plus, Apple isn't interested in gaming, so it was just a matter of time. I expected it much sooner.

Yeah, but it's 96.21% vs 1.84 vs 1.96. In Japan or Korea, this is called acorns comparing their heights.
