you can double click to create a keyframe rather than clicking the + button. i find it a little faster.

Thanks!! For those with a single video with audio, make a selection of the part you want to edit with the scissor, right-click and select "Split audio" so you get a more similar setup like the one on the video

I think they released an update and now the option in the right-click menu is "Insert an effect". Everything else remains the same. Thanks for posting this. I couldn't find the information online.

hmmm, now I understand what I did wrong... I applied the keyframable effect to the track, not the clip, and although I had the option to keyframe the volume, the effect tab does not allow for zooming enough to have a detailed control over keyframes. And no envelope appear on the track. So your method is obviously the way to go. apply the effects to events/clips, not the tracks.
