@@novelezra Overwatch never used any rootkit anti-cheat solutions and always sticked to a server-side anti-cheat solution. That's why I was able to play OW and OW2 with no issues. And with Lutris, installing Overwatch is dead simple.

@@jbullforg Well it's easy to port them to console or mobile because they know that the lengths you would need to take to cheat on those platforms is quite extensive; however if you wanted to mod the PC version it takes a few steps. All of their anti-cheat measures rely on Windows protocols; checking the registry and other programs running. Some of the anti-cheat is actually pretty impressive, I remember the guy who did that Tarkov video said that he installed cheats for Tarkov and Valorant recognized it even though it wasn't even made for Valorant (and Vanguard, the anti cheat for Valorant is the reason that game also doesn't work on Steam Deck) It's funny that even though it's a ballache, you can get OW2 running on SteamOS

If there has ever been a business case for those games being ported to Xbox, or Playstation, then I could see an argument being made for them to bring it to the Deck once it has sufficient market share. What counts as "sufficient", I can't say though.

@@Kiaulen The problem with Dolphin as of right now, is that they used a Wii Common Key. Nintendo was able to strike based on using the Wii Common Key. The way forward would be for them to require users to use their own keys, like Cemu does.

I'm not sure Nintendo is in the right here though. Emulation (especially as a means of preservation) has been proved legal in court. Saying "Emulation makes it easier for pirates" is true, but restricting legal use to combat illegal use will not work. Pirates gonna pirate regardless of what Nintendo does. I am sad that Valve didn't turn a blind eye here though. It would have been easy enough to do, and Valve doesn't need Nintendo to like them (or they'd never have launched a handheld that semi competes with the switch)

@Christopher These keys are not system firmware files (often referred to as "BIOS"* files), which are copyrightable, of course. They are merely encryption/decryption keys. They are not "open source;" they are not "closed source;" they are not "source" at all (nor object code based on source code). They are more like passwords. You wouldn't copyright a password; you'd just try to keep it secret. Passwords are not considered copyrightable. System firmware files (BIOS files) must not be shipped with an emulator because they are copyrighted object code. These keys are instead prohibited to be included because they are part of a copy protection scheme. Though the reason these are prohibited is different, the effect could be essentially the same, making it so they cannot be included with the emulator. *("BIOS" stands for "Basic Input Output System," which is what the firmware for x86 computers used to be called. Because of this, system firmware of all types is often referred to as a "BIOS." Even the newer EFI/UEFI firmware in x86 systems is often referred to by people as the "BIOS.")

@Christopher Just to clarify this: the keys are not Nintendo's intellectual property and are not copyrightable (encryption/decryption keys by their nature are not copyrightable). The reason Nintendo has a legal basis for their complaint is the DMCA provision of making it illegal to circumvent copy protection. The keys allow Dolphin to circumvent copy protection, and therefore violate the DMCA. Because copying is legal for things like backups and format shifting, this part of the DMCA is controversial, but on the other hand there are a lot of illegal copies of old games out there. Liam covers this point correctly in the video.

@@Bananahandler At the same time, numbers shouldn't be copyrightable, and Nintendo put them in there in the first place with the sole intention that people can't easily make their rightful copies of the software they purchased, in order to play them legally on their emulators. It shouldn't be possible to do this for Nintendo to begin with. It's an archaic and poorly thought-out law that only hurts paying consumers for no good reason

I like how they claim it stifles innovation. In what way? Where is that even coming from? The only thing that stifles innovation are these ludicrously lengthy copyrights.
