No, Shadowplay is a Windows only utility program, NVENC is what Shadowplay uses. It's possible to use NVENC on Linux yes, if you compile OBS yourself to have support for it.

The game is on the heavy side, recording at higher FPS killed the framerate and made it too sluggish.

Maybe can use ffmpeg with nvenc support (compiled) previously installed cuda (8.0 in my case) and nvenc sdk (7.01 in my case)
CUDA
https://developer.nvidia.com/cuda-downloads
NVENC (for download 7.0 needs stay register on nvidia)
https://developer.nvidia.com/nvidia-video-codec-sdk
For older nvenc versions: 6.0 and before still can downloaded free
https://developer.nvidia.com/nvidia-video-codec-sdk
This could be helpfull in your case, nvenc in your 980ti have improvements compared with nvenc (1st gen) on my GT630 GK208

This game looks so much like Shadow of Mordor that I almost want to call it Shadow of Mad Max. But that's not necessarily a bad thing since Shadow of Mordor is a great game.

Did you try running under Vulkan? I heard the performance is considerably better.
