This project was developed during a 48-hour GameJam. The randomly selected theme was Micro and Macro. This game was created by me. This game is in Portuguese , and since the dialogues are like poetry, I believe translating them into English wouldn't be as coherent, as the rhythm was crafted with the Portuguese language in mind.


Summary:

Amidst pages blurred by time and shadows that persist in the present, in this narrative game, you will encounter real memories that have occurred (and still occur) in Brazil. The proposed experience, somewhat poetic, aims to evoke buried emotions and to understand that we are one, but we affect everyone.

Kinetic Visual Novel is the correct term for this Visual Novel subgenre, where the player's choices are irrelevant, only the plot and the message matter.

The message behind the game is to show that every decision has a universe of consequences in people's lives. Here, I will reference the Chaos Theory by Edward Lorenz:

"Does the flap of a butterfly’s wings in Brazil set off a tornado in Texas?"


Desired Experience:

In a manner inherent to the entire setting, the experience was designed to occur as follows: playing alone in your room in the dark with headphones on.


Mood:

Both the soundtrack and the art direction were carefully planned to evoke suppressed emotions. Somehow, they were thought to bring sadness for something that happened in the past and still affects people today.


Title and Title Art:

The title "Shadows" brings the perspective of occlusion. Shadows cast in the past that appear in the present and darken our future. More technically, in the title art, the slash in front of the word "Shadow" can be interpreted as individual (micro) poor choices, while the same slash casts shadows over the entire word (macro), shadowing what we understand as society with black and red.


Contains Spoilers:

During the game, you will have access to three memories, three main themes: the COVID-19 pandemicdeaths due to LGBTIQA+ discrimination, and (indirectly) the Isabella Nardoni case (which turned 15 in March 2023). The Micro and Macro theme (proposed in the GameJam UNIVALI 2023.1) is addressed in this narrative game to provoke reflections on how small individual decisions can lead to significant consequences in our lives.

The development of the "dialogue," which more closely resembles a monologue, was written in the form of poetry. Each "speech" is a verse that communicates poetically and reflectively with the whole.
