The Genesis of tuxDB
In the not-so-distant past of 2014, I found myself on a quest for games compatible with Linux. The landscape was fragmented; websites like lgdb.org championed open-source titles, while others, such as gamingonlinux.com and linuxgameconsortium.com, served as news hubs for the Linux gaming community. A void existed - a single, unifying portal encompassing all games playable on Linux, regardless of their origins in open-source, proprietary, Wine, or DOSBox.
This realization ignited the spark that would become tuxDB, a passion project conceived in the quiet corners of my free time. Its evolution has been a testament to the ever-changing nature of the Linux gaming world. From its humble beginnings as a manually curated game list, it has blossomed into a multifaceted platform incorporating Linux game deals, Steam data integration, Linux streaming aggregation, crowdfunding project discovery, WineHQ entries, and a multitude of other Linux gaming-related features.
So, what is tuxDB, in essence? It defies a simple categorization, but perhaps it is best described as a "Linux Gaming Aggregate," a digital tapestry weaving together the myriad threads of the Linux gaming experience.
This journey would not have been possible without the invaluable contributions of Steam, GOG, Twitch, YouTube, Dailymotion, Vimeo, Kickstarter, Indiegogo, and Lutris, who generously make their data publicly accessible.
A heartfelt thank you also goes out to Sudoshred, Hexdsl, Kerias, Yarre, Tumocs, and DyrverE, whose unwavering feedback, innovative ideas, and patient endurance of my endless musings played a crucial role in bringing tuxDB to fruition.
