Story
Purr City, a civilised utopian society of cats, famed for its democracy, peace and recreational activities, has been invaded for its fish resources by genetically engineered rats and birds.
The ruler of Purr City, King Leo VII, has been usurped from this throne and replaced by King Rattus I, the ruler of the rats.
The wizard cat, thanks to his invisibility cloaking device, hides and escapes to the human world. He looks for a brave cat to come and liberate Purr City and its feline inhabitants. He only finds a sleeping lazy cat, who enjoys domesticated bliss with salmon, tuna and catnaps.
The player must save imprisoned cats who are based on historical figures who fought for freedom, equality or contributed to scientific breakthroughs, such as Ada Lovelace, Grace Hopper, Spartacus, Jonas Salk (developer of the polio vaccine who decided against patenting it for the benefit of humanity, Kathrine Switzer (first woman to officially run the Boston Marathon despite opposition) and more. Saved cats give power-ups or unlock features.
Gameplay
Adventure platformer, similar to Super Mario but with a social justice, historical and eco-friendly angle.
Collect fish to feed yourself and the saved cats in each level or you will die of starvation.
Collect coins to operate equipment and buy materials.
Navigate your way past the obstacles: fires, spikes, cacti, giant wheels, moving sandworms, mushrooms and more.
Rats will attack you if they come into contact with you.
The mean birds get even meaner.
Game files are for Mac OS, Windows or Linux.
What are the underlying themes?
The themes are genetic engineering and scientific advancements, occupation - the battle for land and limited resources, and the struggle for equality and emancipation, which resonates with real life and our world history.
The historic personages demonstrate perseverance and courage for what they believe in, to leave the world in a better place.
What is Purr City?
Many years ago, cats broke away from human society, seeing they could build a better way of living, and built their own city.
Purr City is based on the values of democracy and equal opportunities, with a minimum wage in place so every working paw is lifted out of poverty. There is a 3.5 day working week, with every Wednesday afternoon free for recreational activities, fun and play. It is like how life should be.
